1. I think I have looked at the Notts one before and it looked worth a drive out there so that might be an option, I will have a look at Vernons then, thanks.
2.
Likewise.. I have a £400 Thomann ( which after new strings and a setup by a luthier is more than adequate for my use...IE rockabilly-ish music ) which you are more than welcome to come and try......if button moon is anywhere near Bedfordshire.
Ah shame I am North of both of you by a good distance, some say Button Moon looks a little bit like rural Staffordshire
3. Thanks Sarah I am affraid button moon is about 3 hours away from Cardiff which strangely is where I went to collect the pre EB Ray I might sell to fund a DB! What sort of money would the B&H fetch when they are available, I keep hearing good things about them.
4. Now the problem is that I dont know what is any good or not anyway when looking at used basses either, at least if its a reputable shop and they are recommended on here as being decent at least and the shop is selling them at the asking price then they cant be too far off the mark, I could spend £1500 for a bass off gumtree only to post my new peide and joy on here to find out it isnt any good and worth £500 maximum! Why is nothing easy? for example? any good? worth the money? I have no idea, is a bass with a split a terrible thing or nice mojo? 5. Is there anywhere with a stock of good used basses or a good site with private adds? I will have a look on musical chairs too. Thanks.
6. I suppose it is hard for me to grasp how good and bad the basses can be, as a comparison plenty of people slag off P basses on the net but in reality I could buy one off the hook, set it up just how I like with the strings I like and manage the rest of my days on it (I dont want to as I like my Rays too much and mainly play 5 strings anyway!) I am never going to be ace on the upright or sit in an orchestra pit as much as I would of loved too if I had my time again, in reality I will be knocking out Roxanne by the Police and trying my best to read fairly basic scores whilst playing it for my own fun. Most of the stages I play will be too small to use the acoustic upright so the Stagg will still be the gigging bass! 90% of the set is on the electric bass anyway although there are a few jams I could take the proper bass too just for fun. Deep down I have a feeling what fatgoogle classes as decent may well be more than enough to ever match my own abilities
7.
I'm currently fighting the urge to buy the 2E TN bass....
Best of luck with it
8. The 1E is probably my favourite and has everything I want already, looks classy in the pictures and is just in budget.....hmmm.....
9. Is that just a matter of having the post reset then? It is all your fault anyway with your Gedo thread
10. Or save £10 and get it posted for free! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Archer-3-4-Size-Professional-Double-Bass-with-Case-/300854330150?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item460c50c326
11. Ok so now we have the Archer in the mix then! http://www.gear4music.com/Woodwind-Brass-Strings/Archer-3-4-size-Professional-Double-Bass/8UV
'Av a look at these - http://www.thwaites....asses-from-1-2k
The one thing that bugs me with these is the bloody website! I would like to go and try some and get some advice which I am sure they would sort me out with something nice from the good reviews they get but it is quite far for me to go, normally that does not bother me (in fact normally annoys me when people say it!) but as I cant tell a good one from bad is there any point going?
12. I am getting the inevitable gas for a real double bass which I was told would happen from the start! I am not using my 4 string basses much really and as much as I love the black '79 pre EB bass I bought not that long ago I am wondering if the money would be better off invested in an upright? (trades welcome I guess then ) Thats the easy bit, next problem, what to get and how much to spend etc?! Alistair's Gedo bass thread had me looking at their site and the customer reviews of the service are really good, there is some suggestion that the Thomann basses come from here? which is the other place I was looking at anyway, any other suggestions for basses in the £600-1000 range would be welcome, I am hoping to get around £1350 for the pre EB so that will leave me a few quid for strings, stand, mic, preamp etc etc etc Alistair has had an adjustable bridge fitted which I like the idea of so I guess so far I am looking at Gedo stuff One of these but pay extra for an adjustable bridge http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=795 or this http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=762 Probably my favourite? http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=794 Thomann stuff I like this but the bridge is set? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_11_02.htm This is classy and already has the bridge I want http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_double_bass_europe_1e_tn_3_4.htm Top of my budget and is spending money on the quilted finish better spent elsewhere? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_1e_qm_34_europe_double_bass.htm Any ideas are more than welcome on this as I have no idea what I am doing (as is the norm) Ta
13.
Thanks for the comments I'm having a great time with it, i wish i'd bought one years ago. I was hoping this would keep my GAS at bay for a few weeks at least. Not so. Now i need different strings, pickups, preamp, case, stand, shades... etc...
Haha I've just been through it with the electric upright, spiros at £150, bow another £100 , still need a stand and a few lessons once doddy gets back from his tour! I like the Framus one in the for sale section
14.
Weddings is what we do ! I fall in the bookings for 2015 Category. I have to say I love the " we are going to start a wedding band " thing it makes it sound so simple. I have played in every situation I can think of over the years and the hardest gig i have done is a wedding gig. It's easy to get a pub rockin but to play a room that has just sat down and stuffed themselves of food and had a long day is a different matter.then do it so well that you have every weekend booked for the year and keep it that way for the years to follow. I am not saying it isn't a lot of fun but its not as easy as they might think. 6 Anyway, why bother with these guys. Find a band that is looking for a bass player and is already on the way to getting some gigs. I always found that the worst part of setting up a band is the first 6 months as finding five people who get on can be tricky and this is normally when you chop and change a few members to get the right crew. With a reply like theirs I would count myself lucky and move on. Btw if anyone know of a good sound guy looking for a gig in the west of ireland give me a shout.
We are just starting a wedding band at the moment but to be fair we have all done it before, it is hard and we have decided to start off all legit from the off so we won't be able to do them for feck all like we have in the past. I know what you mean about tough audiences too, I hate those random week night ones, who wants to party until late on a wednesday when they need to be up early for work especially when they are in a bad mood after having to waste a holiday day on a wedding they did not want to go to!
15.
I went to buy a Zoom pedal once off a forum member. He kindly gave me a play of his 5 string and for some unkown reason the extra string just befuddled me. It was so emabaressing, as I sat there plink plonking away. I have no idea why it did that to me, but it just reinforced a prejudice that I already vaguely felt against 5 strings at some basic level (ie: A bass has 4 strings, any more than that and its not a bass. Sort of thinking) So my 'transistion' was non exsistant, and always will be
If you search back on basschat I made a post fairly similar to yours, even got into a heated debate as I felt so strongly, sold my '71 MGB GT and bought my first pre EB and I love it, never gets played as a year later I switched to 5 strings
16.
Yer 'tis! Have just had a Bartolini p bass pick up fitted by the Bass Gallery in the neck position (after this photo). Graham
I like it!
17. They do make a deluxe one with a better finger board and stuff, is another couple of hundred quid.
18. You know Bob I'm not sure there is, I thought I would try the Stagg then upgrade if I could play it but the only ones worth going to for me are a lot more cash like the Yamaha Silent basses, There may be some more obscure ones I dont know of but just trying them to play before buying to compare is a challenge! Get a Stagg and do the mods and you wont be dissapointed If you go for Spirocore strings or similar you are up to £450 anyway, add a bow at £100 and a few other bits and its adding up, a nice bass with crap strings is not going to be better than a cheaper one with good strings from what I have learnt so far.
19. Some poor bugger is going to register as XXXXX and get all sorts of grief
20. Still not discovered who this is then? Damn Bass Collection gas now though, I thought it was.
21. If they (and fwiw others commenting in this thread) were so 'pro' I doubt anyone would be bothered about people being in other bands, all the best pro and semi pro bands (for want of a better term) I know have at least one stand in for every member of that function band, the best wedding bands have some bookings into 2015 with almost every weekend taken for this year, even 'pros' need a weekend off now and again
