The considerations that mattered were: Fingerboard - ebony, not 'ebonised', although other hard woods are ok. Body - ply or ply/solid top. The last is a great compromise. Full solid can be harder to control feedback. All-ply is fine for amplified situations anyhow. Strings - Doesn't matter, as you'll change them sooner or later. Allow extra cash for this. Luthier setup - you'll probably get this done, so more cash. Pickup - Allow plenty extra cash over say a year for lots of experiments. Preamp - ditto, unless you have an amp designed for upright. Bow - No big hurry with this, although others would say different.
Well, I am already set on the ebony board. Looking like a ply or ply with a spruce top I'd say looking at the stuff in budget. Strings will be Spirocores to match my stagg, find the cash from somewhere! Luthier setup, I'm not sure on costs and hopefully get a playable bass if I can? Pickup and preamp I will try and copy others and keep it simple, I won't be gigging the acoustic for a while and the stagg will be easier for the function band. Bow, I have already got a nice carbon Yita music one after my french or german thread Also amp wise I am sorted as I am lucky enough to have a selection of Genz rigs which are quite common with db I beleive?

Thats all good mate, same here Moondance and suggestions of stray cat strut about ten mins after, we do Love Cats and a couple of Police covers, all obvious ones but who cares? The hum will come in if you stand over a mains cable or something, or if the venue has a bit of a crap earth at the sockets etc, no top of the mods list but worth the extra £5 or so to do it, also when I took my back plate off the end pin had been rubbing the piezo wires, a few more pack aways and I would of needed new ones! How are your nut slot and bridge slots? My E string kept making a bid for freedom when trying to get a bit rockabilly on Love Cats (as much as you can on EUB). Glad your liking it and yes even my Ray 5 neck feel like toy guitars! Makes me chuckle when people say they cant play a Jazz width or cant play a P width neck!

I have a fascination with trying to find a right handed bass player that has accidentally learnt on a lefty bass upside down, the reverse of the Doves guy who plays a right hooker left handed for example, there must be one?
Likewise.. I have a £400 Thomann ( which after new strings and a setup by a luthier is more than adequate for my use...IE rockabilly-ish music ) which you are more than welcome to come and try......if button moon is anywhere near Bedfordshire.
Ah shame I am North of both of you by a good distance, some say Button Moon looks a little bit like rural Staffordshire

Now the problem is that I dont know what is any good or not anyway when looking at used basses either, at least if its a reputable shop and they are recommended on here as being decent at least and the shop is selling them at the asking price then they cant be too far off the mark, I could spend £1500 for a bass off gumtree only to post my new peide and joy on here to find out it isnt any good and worth £500 maximum! Why is nothing easy? for example? any good? worth the money? I have no idea, is a bass with a split a terrible thing or nice mojo? I suppose it is hard for me to grasp how good and bad the basses can be, as a comparison plenty of people slag off P basses on the net but in reality I could buy one off the hook, set it up just how I like with the strings I like and manage the rest of my days on it (I dont want to as I like my Rays too much and mainly play 5 strings anyway!) I am never going to be ace on the upright or sit in an orchestra pit as much as I would of loved too if I had my time again, in reality I will be knocking out Roxanne by the Police and trying my best to read fairly basic scores whilst playing it for my own fun. Most of the stages I play will be too small to use the acoustic upright so the Stagg will still be the gigging bass! 90% of the set is on the electric bass anyway although there are a few jams I could take the proper bass too just for fun. Deep down I have a feeling what fatgoogle classes as decent may well be more than enough to ever match my own abilities

Ok so now we have the Archer in the mix then! http://www.gear4music.com/Woodwind-Brass-Strings/Archer-3-4-size-Professional-Double-Bass/8UV
'Av a look at these - http://www.thwaites....asses-from-1-2k
The one thing that bugs me with these is the bloody website! I would like to go and try some and get some advice which I am sure they would sort me out with something nice from the good reviews they get but it is quite far for me to go, normally that does not bother me (in fact normally annoys me when people say it!) but as I cant tell a good one from bad is there any point going?

I am getting the inevitable gas for a real double bass which I was told would happen from the start! I am not using my 4 string basses much really and as much as I love the black '79 pre EB bass I bought not that long ago I am wondering if the money would be better off invested in an upright? (trades welcome I guess then ) Thats the easy bit, next problem, what to get and how much to spend etc?! Alistair's Gedo bass thread had me looking at their site and the customer reviews of the service are really good, there is some suggestion that the Thomann basses come from here? which is the other place I was looking at anyway, any other suggestions for basses in the £600-1000 range would be welcome, I am hoping to get around £1350 for the pre EB so that will leave me a few quid for strings, stand, mic, preamp etc etc etc Alistair has had an adjustable bridge fitted which I like the idea of so I guess so far I am looking at Gedo stuff One of these but pay extra for an adjustable bridge http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=795 or this http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=762 Probably my favourite? http://www.gedo-musik.de/shop/product.php?id_product=794 Thomann stuff I like this but the bridge is set? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_11_02.htm This is classy and already has the bridge I want http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_double_bass_europe_1e_tn_3_4.htm Top of my budget and is spending money on the quilted finish better spent elsewhere? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_1e_qm_34_europe_double_bass.htm Any ideas are more than welcome on this as I have no idea what I am doing (as is the norm) Ta
Thanks for the comments I'm having a great time with it, i wish i'd bought one years ago. I was hoping this would keep my GAS at bay for a few weeks at least. Not so. Now i need different strings, pickups, preamp, case, stand, shades... etc...
Haha I've just been through it with the electric upright, spiros at £150, bow another £100 , still need a stand and a few lessons once doddy gets back from his tour! I like the Framus one in the for sale section
