1.
Ive got a Squier Jazz 5 string. I didn't want to spend too much in case I didnt like it, so I opted for the cheap alternative. I have to say, the Squier has a surprisingly good sound. Trouble is, our set doesn't have that many songs where a 5 would be suitable, so I havent given it the attention I could have. One thing I hate is 5's being used when the song doesn't suit it. I mean classic rock songs just dont go that low .Some people throw in low notes just cos they can. We dont play any modern metal or funk where the 5 would be justified. I really need to spend more time on it right enough and maybe suggest some songs that would suit it. I still find it quite weird having a lower string than the E where I spend most of my time
You need to think of it all different, the problem is all the songs you know are ingrained playing off the E string rather than the E on the B string, In the function band I rarely use the extra notes but lots of riffs are easier across the board
2.
5 string basses have been around for a while now-I have wondered why we do not have a 5string bass hero? Is there things you can play on a 5 string that you cant play on a 4?
Try Aint Nobody by Chaka Khan on a 4 string, hard enough on 5 (I presume it was recorded on a 4 though? Cant might be wrong but dropping to Low B and getting it to sound like the record then getting the octaves on what would be the G string on a five now half way up the neck would be beyond many me included
3. Ha what you like! The term session is probably a bit too posh really but we will see......
4.
It's not being pedantic. My example was that everyone knows what notes you mean and it's not worth having a long discussion in the practice studio over whether it's an Ab or a G#. In my example the guitarist called out the notes and after F# I was expecting him to say G# and when he said Ab it threw me for a microsecond. When I said it was G# he looked at me blankly like he'd never heard of a G#... If you're practicing and you call out C# D# E#, 9 times out of 10 you'll confuse someone.
I agree but in that situation the rule of only using each note name once doesn't apply, practising at home and reading it from the score it is an E# If it were a punk band practice you would probably just shout out "5th fret, 3rd fret"
5. Only had my stagg since Christmas and word has got out amongst the local musos, I have been recommended for a little recording session by a great female vocalist I have worked with on a few projects over the last couple of years. I'm still being held back by my bad wrist and a proper double bass would sound better I'm sure although my modded stagg with it's spirocores sounds pretty good IMO. The track is just a demo at the moment and a sort of buddy holly tribute song, I will link it up once it's done.
6.
It doesn't matter so long as you all use the same one. My covers band usually choses the single version as it will be the one the majority of the audience know and it will be missing all the unnecessary guitar solos.
Likewise
7.
E sharp! PAH! You'l be teling us you saw Elvis working in a fish n chip shop next then ? .
I know crazy ain't it!
8. I don't see why it's being pedantic, the E is sharp in the key of F sharp, it's just that it's the first time I have knowingly played one
9. All my brain cells got used on reading ain't nobody and understanding that I had finally found an E#, the double sharps will have to wait
10.
I think that's only for double bass.
Well I have one of those and have made some funny noises with it, maybe one of them was it?
11. Still no idea where the double sharp (E##) comes in but I will look for the next 25 years
12. As a fairly novice reader I have just been using my new found skill to read Chaka Khan Aint Nobody for our function band and as its in F# major the E is sharp, ten years ago I would of doubted its existence even though I had probably been playing them, This was the first time I have ever conciously played E# Doddy will be proud next time I see him
13. Re the above I can play a 4 or 5 strings without much fuss swapping between basses during a set anyway.
14. I can't imagine using a four for function band stuff now, if you play in one band maybe but playing the same song in a different key a few days apart is so much easier if you have learnt the songs playing off the B string even if you never touch the ERB area
15. I have used one a lot, nice basses. The tort guard is a bit flimsy and the string spacing is even narrower than a regular ray 5 but it did not bother me.
16. when I say you I mean me obviously as your a left hooker so to speak!
17. Any idea where you can try one out and the cost of one?
18.
LOL - that newsletter from Warwick got my attention too As electric uprights, Triumphs are cool IMO, such an unusual shape. I've never been able to play one though - I'm actually waiting for Warwick to produce an affodable lefty Rockbass Triumph sooner or later! - so I'm not sure whether such shape is as ergonomic to play as the traditional long-and-thin EUB shape.
Is there a rockbass triumph then? I have missed them!
19. Best of luck with it Jim, I have a few gigs coming in now so I am hoping it will head on up to me soon
