1. Bow has arrived! Pics later....... Oh and how exactly do I apply rosin? Thanks
2. Mousemat cut up is the normal trick but I found some childrens foam stamp kits in a pound shop, cut them up, glued them on job done
3. Sorry in the heat I have indeed said mm! not cm I may be able to counter sink the tail piece enough tomorrow night to allow them to fit where they will stay for at least ten years! If my plan fails it will not result in any more damage to the strings and I can measure them from the ball to the silks to be sure and list each measurement, remember I have only cut 15cm and the silk is still well over onto my fingerboard hence the problem.
4. ON HOLD UNTIL I CAN SEE IF A MODIFICATION CAN BE DONE
5.
A cup of tea for starters I think if you plan on sticking with these strings then its worth the shot and maybe stopping at 20mm and trimming a bit of silk back. I actually tried trimming the silks on mine before realising They still wouldnt fit and went for the countersinking so mine, I assume, arent worth much but then Im not planning on changing them at all. They last for a long time. Just detuned my E completely and the stretch is 18mm. They have been on for over a year so you could probably add a couple of mm to that. A
I think I will just have to sacrifice the silks then and try taking a bit out at a time, job for tomorrow now anyway.
6. I think the yellow discs are a lame attempt at damping the strings at that end, I have a lump of foam behind my strings and presume everyone else does? I could take 10 mm from the body and move the tail piece up a bit and then take the rest by countersinking the ball ends to keep more wood left, I have just had a look and the G string will only need a tickle but the others will be level with the screws nearest the bridge.
7. So yours are Mittles but should be the same length then, Hhhmmm what to do????? If I knew how much stretch the E would have I could allow for it and not take so much out? Thanks for your help on this apa
8.
Just measured mine by sticking a pencil from the back. The back end of the ball is 23mm from the front of the block. If you take away the diameter of the ball from 23mm you will have the amount of wood left. There is no sign of damage or stress on mine. All is solid. A
So that is from the side nearest the bridge to the back of a spiro ball? I have just measured a ball at about 10mm so you think you have about 13mm of wood left? Does your have the yellow foam pads in too or have you discarded them? Thanks.
9. I have listed them for £100 do you think that sounds fair? If I put 4/4 strings on it then will I need to go for mittels or stay with the weichs?
10. How much wood have you got left? yes they are purple at the head but red at the bridge.
11. To do that I will need an extra 3mm depending on how much stretch the E string will give which will leave this much timber left, if the anchor breaks that the Stagg written off too!
12. I dont think the E will get anywhere near, I fitted the G first and the silk eneded up a bit shy But I could of eithe counter sunk the ball end a bit or rolled the silk up a bit, then when I fitted the D I could see the problem was getting worse as I went across, If I had gone for the E first I would of been able to send them back for a set of 4/4 instead I will look again but I dont think it will work......
13. I have listed them in the for sale section, now what do I do? 4/4 mittles or still weichs? Jeez this is not good at all!
14. That really has gone to sh*t guys what a waste of money! Realistically what can I ask for a brand new set of Spiros E and A never fitted other than to see how short they came up and the D with G with 5cm off the G and some silk damage, 15cm off the D string and a bit of silk damage? Disaster!
15. Looks like the 3/4 spiros are too short too me, feck and sake springs to mind in a massive way! Silks are way short of the nut or will they tension up that much? I have already snipped the G and the D a little bit, are they ruined?
16. Dead strings and dead battery? I own both versions, both have plenty of zing
17.
It's not been as daunting as I expected so far. I'm thinking my agricultural bass guitar style has stood me in good stead. I read the newbie thread. Interesting. I'm not going to go down the jazz or bow avenues. I'm hoping there's a little 'swing' hidden in our songs.
I have been learning to read for a while now so it made sense to link the two together and the bow is just for practising to make the notes last longer whilst trying to intonate, I can't see me playing and bowed gigs!
18.
well technically isn't it kinda like a rehash of the ones Leo built? Not a bad thing
True but unlike fender just throwing together bits of existing models to make a reissue often technically wrong even when they had the right bits all along the classic rays have required pats not made or fitted on their bases for years by MM or ever by ebmm.
19. I have warmed to the Big Al 5, I would love to try one at some point
