1. Our guitarist has a pointy Hamer that he has had rewired for allsorts of pickup combinations, wheres a leather jacket that he painted his own devil design on, loves 80's metal and anything pointy would you jam with him wateroftyne?
2. So why does anyone have anything more than 100watts? Why do barefaced cabs get a reputation for being power hungry etc?
3. There must be a point though where you need a big enough amp to drive them though? Hanging 4 4x10s off an old Trace 150 watt head for example cant be the best can it, especially if your sucking up juice with a 5 string?
4. But they are shaped a bit odd, a 5 string jazz, P or even the new EBMM Classic 5 looks fairly similar unless your a bass nerd though. If no one tried putting things out of their natural habitat we would be stuck in the 60's (some people are). Anyway I would turn up for the jazz/blues gig with my upright
5. Now thats funny because I have found all the same notes on mm 5 string basses so any music style that can be played on 4 can be done on 5, is a six different then? Your being drawn up the same path about what looks right!
6. The funny thing is that the electric bass has not been around that long in the grand scheme of things anyway, all these stupid ideas have been forged over roughly 10 year periods, 60's, 70's, punk, electro stuff, pop, metal, brit pop etc, I have socks older than those fashion periods. Imagine the upright players reaction to the 51 P bass.....it will never catch on just like class D heads etc
7. Once you learn tab though its an easy go to which might be good for many but I am not the only one that had wished I had learnt score from the off.
8. As nice as they are I'm bored of seeing tobacco burst p or j basses in every video or live (mimed) show, it appears to be the only fashionable thing to have right now, I would rather turn one of them away than a 5er . Remember the good old days of pointy things and garish colours? Anyway all ERB players are w***ers
9. Yes I think maybe I should check with my teacher before ordering one then, ta
10. Thanks Damo, would even a cheapo wooden one be ok then if I go German? I cant see me progressing that far with the arco but I can see its good for scales to sustain the notes so its mainly for that at the moment although I am prepared to give anything a go
11. And what about resin/rosin? no idea on that either
12. This is cheap enough but has a German frog http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_cbb01g_34_carbon_bassbow.htm I could go to this but will it be crap http://www.thomann.de/gb/gewa_bassbogen_franzoesisch_34.htm I like this http://www.thomann.de/gb/rothjunius_rjcf_01g_carbon_bass_bow.htm French, carbon and within budget? http://www.thomann.de/gb/artino_fiberglass_bassbow_3_4f.htm
13.
I thought you were going to ask about women
My sister in law is French if it was that simple I would now choose German! I guess I should ask Doddy as he will be the poor begger trying to get me to make something like a tune using it?
14. If you played anything else over this it would of made something other than Oasis, that might be a good thing who knows but enough people liked it didn't they? I hate them but I guess it inspired many people to think "well I could play that lets get a band going"
15.
I wouldn't put Adan Clayton in the same bracket as the other two because he makes so much more of a contribution to the sound of that band than the other two ( three ) have ever done to theirs . Show me a Coldplay or Oasis record where the bass is an integral part of the overall composition like it is on New Years Day , With Or Without You , Still Havent Found ect and several others I can't be bothered to name ,. It might be simple but it's memorable and often highly effective . The same cannot be said of the fellows out of Coldplay or Oasis , who have literally never played anything of any merit . Ever .
I dont like any of the bands in question but disagree on all levels, the boring basslines were integral to the early Oasis and Coldplay. I cant beleive I am defending Cold Play
16. Total idiot question time I am affraid, I know what the difference is after lusting over them but as a beginner at arco on an EUB what am I likely to be best off with? I know I need a 3/4 and probably carbon as it has been suggested as the best option for a budget bow but what about the frog? Thanks in advance as I know you lot will have me getting the right one
17.
It's a difficult call because I wouldn't call either them super bands in terms of their artistic achievement ( or lack thereof ) but special mention must firstly be given to the bass player out of Coldplay . He is desperately bad , and I think even he knows it . He looks like he is completly out of his depth and expects to be exposed as a fraud at any moment . The other notables are whoever occupied the bass chair in Oasis ( Giggsy and Andy Bell I suppose ) who similaly never played a worthwhile note , and didn't seem to care either . I always thought the bass player out of Pulp was awful too . In contrast to the bass players I have just mentioned who are genuinely reprehensible , I have to say that I think the criticisms of Adam Clayton are completley unwarranted . I think he is a very good bass player within the idiom in which he is working . He has played many memorable and inventive parts that serve U2s songs superbly well , he's got a great sound on a lot of those records and he knows how to come up with a great hook every now and again . He might not be Stanley Clarke, but his music ends up all the better for that .
I guess if you look in a dictionary under contradiction they would of put this but it was too long?
18. Its a fine balance between keeping someone interested, ie learning songs they like from tab and learning the 'proper' (for want of a better word!) way, can both ways be done?
19. You know my answer great year for them too as they were mostly made for them by Charvel and the quality is superb!
20.
I think it is entirely legitimate to class some players as poor. This ia a bass player's forum, not a fan site. If someone is held up as a special player because of their technique or the creativity of their lines then its a matter of taste but if someone can't hold a tune together without messing up, only ever plays root notes and is out of tune, then 'poor' is the appropriate term. Once you put yourself out there for 'consumption', you have to take the rough with the smooth. Liking everything out of politeness is just being undiscerning.
Using this term and I agree then I dont think I have ever seen a band outside of the local youth club that was 'poor' then, plenty of basic root note players out there myself included but in time and in key most of the time from what I have seen If no one had ever played fairly simple lines on bass I suspect most of us here would never of tried, sure I loved the BSSM album but had much more chance of getting a band going at school sounding like Nirvana than the Chilis, I imagine most of us have a similar story and we could guess your ages by the bands you substitute for my choices? Stupid thing is by the time I had a chance at playing something a bit more tasty I was too old and losing my hair, which again I suspect I am not alone
