Total idiot question time I am affraid, I know what the difference is after lusting over them but as a beginner at arco on an EUB what am I likely to be best off with? I know I need a 3/4 and probably carbon as it has been suggested as the best option for a budget bow but what about the frog? Thanks in advance as I know you lot will have me getting the right one

Its a fine balance between keeping someone interested, ie learning songs they like from tab and learning the 'proper' (for want of a better word!) way, can both ways be done?

[/quote] Using this term and I agree then I dont think I have ever seen a band outside of the local youth club that was 'poor' then, plenty of basic root note players out there myself included but in time and in key most of the time from what I have seen [b]If no one had ever played fairly simple lines on bass I suspect most of us here would never of tried, sure I loved the BSSM album but had much more chance of getting a band going at school sounding like Nirvana than the Chilis, I imagine most of us have a similar story and we could guess your ages by the bands you substitute for my choices?[/b] Stupid thing is by the time I had a chance at playing something a bit more tasty I was too old and losing my hair, which again I suspect I am not alone

Bound to fall on deaf ears I know but if I was 11 again I would seriously want to learn to read from the off, even if it was just 15 minutes of practice alongside the fun stuff it would sink in, It is so hard to learn later in life

I used to think Meg from the White Stripes was sh*t but its just an act and they did something different, Glastonbury I think it was a few years ago they did a little pre rehearsed jam thing and it was so tight that there is no way the drumming we see is the top of her ability. Oasis would of sounded like every other band if the drummer and bass player had gone all out, it was that empty sound with Noel's typical solos that made them, even after they could have the best players in the world they kept that original style, I and hate Oasis!

The reason most AC/DC covers bands are sh*te is because they dont have a Cliff Williams! People think because they can slap and pop they are better (even people on here who have never left the shed) so many of those players cant play a 4 minute pop song and keep time, Its like the story of the drum clinic where the guy just played a straight solid beat for 15 minutes or something and told everyone to learn how to do that and they will be able to have a career in the business

Anything like this I expect to see an ebs rig in the shadows during live shows! Which is odd as ebs _freak once told me that in the states they were marketed and seen as a modern r and b rig yet in their homeland and mainland europe most people see them as a metal bands go too rig

Nice bit of grain! I only have one trans finish bass now and that's got me gassing, if I pull the trigger on a classic 5 it will be a trans finish that's made me certain

The online specs are meaningless IMO, SR5's are meant to be 10lbs or something, they can be as little as 8.5 and as much as 12, try hanging two bags of sugar off the bottom of your bass at the next gig you do and tell us if its a waste of time asking Nut width is easier I agree although not all basses are equal especially regarding bolt on neck basses, plenty of P's with a J neck out there and visa versa, SR4's are available with a Slo neck (jazz width) pre EB Stingrays had an option of a narrow nut too I beleive, neither have that written on them (maybe the slo but I have never seen one!)

Thanks Sarah, It's the clips like that that make me want a proper DB at some point rather than the EUB but hopefully this will give me a bit of a grounding and like I said I am purposefully trying not to play it like a stingray on end or lowering the action right down, I was after an NS design to start with but now I have the Stagg I am actually glad I did as its more realistic to a DB which is what I want I will see how fast my wrist improves then get a few lessons in and go from there but so far I am loving it

[/quote] Thats it aint it Lozz P J or MM of any type can be made to play OK, I work at a school where the caretaker both plays and builds guitars as a hobby, he has got 15 elec guitars for the childrens music lessons out of the Maplins or RS catalogue you know the type £69 with an amp etc, He has re strung them and set them all up over a few weeks as and when he got any spare time, all 15 he says are brilliant now, he practices with his band in the school hall and just uses one of the kids guitars now instead of bringing his own in!
