1. I cant find the guy who said to use the 3rd & 4th together now, probably for the best!
2. Well this is one clip where he suggests not using the 3rd finger at all then contradicts himself by elastic banding it to the 2nd after a while? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ4ctFAe7r0 I will go with what your saying but I cant really bend my wrist round enough yet so getting the stretches is harder than it would of been before damaging my wrist, its a bit of a double edge sword as learning now might make me develop bad habits that I can't avoid but at the same time its probably getting my mobility back faster than watching TV.
3. Thanks, so much stuff to listen to and learn!
4. The clip I was watching suggested 1st finger then 2nd finger and 3&4 together, would you advise against that then? As I still have only maybe 25% of the movement in my wrist at the moment I am trying not to worry too much and at the same time not get in to any bad habits (hard I know), once I feel I can move it a lot better I will have a few lessons which are already lined up
5. A they have a painted board I guess you can't really re profile the board? I have took them to about 1mm and all is good so I will leave it at that
6. Thanks for that I will have a peek after lunch, Thanks and a Merry Christmas to you too
7. Is this this guy that ruins stuff on eBay or something (Edit- MDP bass works portland? ) Here is a pic the best I can get it
8. Morning everyone! OK so a few days have passed since my Stagg arrived and its going well to be honest, as I still have a really bad wrist recovering from a surgical repair I am doing much better than I thought I would, a few songs from our set are almost gig ready, Love Cats, a few Paloma Faith songs, Valerie, 9-5, Moves Like Jagger etc which are just the songs I thought could work on the upright and I think they sound pretty good tbf. So from there I have started reading practice at the same time which I only got started on less than 2 years ago anyway so I am a novice at both! I have a TC Polytune and its brilliant for checking to see how well you are hitting the notes as its so fast and accurate it can swap around even when playing fairly fast pizz. Sometimes I am right in the zone and playing something like Lay Down Sally across all four strings and the polytune is just firing them out then as I get tired it starts to slip Anyway I am rambling again, what I want to know is how near to the fingerboard I should take the nut slots down to make fingering the first semitones from the nut easier? My Stagg does not appear to be as bad as others have mentioned and mainly its the A string that is sitting up a bit higher than the rest, by the time I am up to the next semi tones F#- B-E-A its not too bad and really just my lack of time playing Db that are holding me back which I am working on. I have my set of files at the ready and the wife is at work all day so any advice would be more than welcome
9. Maybe its wrapped up under our tree?!
10. Even Leo Fender cocked this up on the Stingray after builing basses for more than 35 years!
11.
Yes, but we are talking about a school where an old priest came into our classroom one day and said "You's are all working away like blacks". I mean, he was fairly old, but holy hell, what a thing to say to a bunch of impressionable kids! believe me, having the un-PC terms for the principle/headmistress/ head teacher whatever, was the least of the schools worries!
Maybe you misread him and he was in fact impressed with the black pupils work ethic and thought you were all slackers?! Benefit of the doubt but probably just a rascist old get.
12. Hey don't get upset guys! Its just one of those terms that has crept in, I was poking fun that's all. Now get on the sidewalk and get me a diet soda! So this dick in the pub has created 11 pages of chat then!
13. Vice principle, so this was in America then?
14. Credit card-bass direct-no more lugging heavy gear-joy
15. I can't imagine how great that would be! As a newcomer to upright and Gary Karr is there a cd I really should get hold of?
16.
S funny innit, maybe it cause its your local pub. Half a dozen people in the room, especially if I know any by sight it takes me a while to loosen up. A packed house full of paying strangers, and I hardly notice they are there.
+1
17.
He was your teacher? That's fabulous! He always looks like he's enjoying himself, and makes it all look so effortless doesn't he?
It amazes me how much range the upright can cover when played by him, deep lows up to almost violin like tones, beautiful!
18. 2 and 5 are the line connections, 3 is the ringer connection from the master point to all the others (slaves), 2 and 5 must be the right way around or the line will appear to work fine but no one will be able to make your phone ring! If you are using a set of wireless phones then only the main unit that plugs in needs a master point as the base will tell the others when to ring. 4 core will probably be blue with a white flash and the opposite plus orange with a white flash and visa versa, blues normally go to 2 and 5 so remove the cable from three and put it with the blue with a white stripe and do the same with its orange counter part and double it up with the white with a blue stripe and its done, if you want to make both points able to ring a handset then fit a master to the extra point (s). Top and bottom is 2 and 5 are the line 3 is the ringer from the master point between all slaves. For anyone still awake or curious the master has a capcitor that charges up as someone calls you then discharges down the line to number 5 (I think if not 2) via the bell in the old handsets making it ring, years ago only a few phones could be fed off one capacitor but as the modern phones have little piezos or just tells your digital hands free set to play the simpsons theme or whatever its not really an issue anymore. There you go how off topic can you get?
19. pre eb ray with mutes on , bass on full treble off, played near the end of the fingerboard certainly would change a few opinions on the actives typical sound
20. I only see that in the lower end of the scale which is inevitable, bottom of the range passive 21 frets solid colours etc going up through to active controls and trans colours or laminate tops etc, all those things cost money. Once you go up to sadowsky or Alleva etc all that is left behind ime.
21. That's not directed soley at you Ki0gon btw but I guess you are included
22. Artificially awesome is fine by me it always makes me chuckle with these threads that people say they have never had any problem getting enough treble from their gear so there is no need for active basses or tweeters etc then in their sig they have an array of fenders probably on flats played through an ashdown rig! As for the op Each to their own so you either need to find a passive bass you like or find an active one and gut it, which has variable results ime. I have never seen active basses as being higher end ever in fact most of the passive basses I have tried in recent times have been expensive ones, how much is a circuit to the manufacturers £2?
23. I think most independant shops will do it if you ask, I have done it in the past when I was at school/college to stop me spending the money. Obviously be aware that we are in uncertain economic times, 3 of our local shops have got white wash over the windows and no sign of any instruments anymore which is not good if they owe you money or a bass! One of those tins that you cant get the cash out of unless you use a can opener might work?
24. You cant play Arco on a P bass you know
