1. This morning I have combined reading and practicing on the upright, Roxanne by the Police works quite well and I can pretty much (sort of) sight read that now too. Plenty of time to try and intonate each note properly. Next up from the same book Lay down Sally by Clapton, now it took me a while to realise its in half time then it improved, much harder to play as its up and down the neck much more so fingering choice is a bit more complex but its good for getting me to learn the scale difference as you go up the fingerboard, funny thing is I could probably jam that on the upright now already if I kept to the simple version of a sort of swing 12 bar thing, this is where some knowledge makes learning harder Lunch break and dog walk to let the brain cool off now
2.
Why does every thread with the trigger words "active" and/or "passive" turn into an "active vs. passive" debate regardless of the question posed by the OP?
What else is there to say about the op? some companies make only passive others only active most make both because, and heres the bit that answers your question, some people like passive some people like active some people like both.
3. I have had a cab with a wide mesh grill with big diamond slots in it that somehow got a pen lid lost in their! took a bit of understanding but fixed by tipping it up until in fell out very strange noise I can tell you.
4. Even my upright is active
5.
There's something missing in the tone of active basses in my opinion. I can't put my finger on what though. I've had a few actives in my time, from stingrays to shukers and every one has had something missing.
And I feel exactly the opposite! dull and lack lustre for me and I have tried all sorts of stuff trust me. I am not really that much of a treble fan but rarely have I tried a passive bass with any bite in the top end. My amps have active EQ's on them so they make any bass sound good really but climbing over a drum kit mid song to add a bit of treble/bass because the room is filling up or emptied and changed how it sounds is no fun either!
6. Here you go
7. Yeah I like that! Reminds me of the Joe Satriani Ibanez guitars from the 90's with the rounded body edges, very classy without being a coffee table bass
8. Its just you three though boost bass , mid if applicable on the detent, treble just on the plus side of the detent every time. Amp flat.
9. Musicman20 is a bit shy with his bass control I too run bass flat out on all four of my rays
10. My modded affinity jazz is brilliant! Also as they are a bit thinner they are super light, I used mine for wedding and function gigs if it was a 2 hour + set
11. In- 1979 mm stingray and an electric upright bass, also a shuttleMax 9.2 amp (awesome!) Out- does not compute I'm not buying any gear next year though......well maybe a carbon bow for the upright.....and a set of strings for it which cost more than a few basses I have owned........and maybe a classic ray 5 stingray in tobacco burst...........
12. Just watched it! I'm new to Db but already love Gary Karr
13.
You have an issue about re-issues? I hope you don't start to like them and then decide you don't like them later on again because then you'd have a re-issue about re-issues
EBMM have re issued a sterling as the classic re issue but it was not an issue in the first place, I have an issue with that I am always amazed at how good the condition of peoples 57 P basses are or I think wow nice 75 Jazz thats mint, Oh hang on they missed the Ri off their sig
14. I must admit I am looking forward to trying the sub boost on full through my ShuttleMax 9.2 and 2x12T cab So far I am using just a tad to warm it up but that is through a 1x10 cab in the house. Muttley must be having some bass GAS now damn Basschat!
15. Do you have to have some kind of training or a licence to own one of those?
16.
Indeed, each to his/her own .
Maybe the Aria is for you then? If you dont get on with it I could buy it off you at a knock down price
17.
Stagg is piezo only, yes. I also have an Aria and personally I much prefer the piezo, so much that I'll probably remove the mag.
Well there you go I think the mag on the Aria spools the look so I would take it off If I did not use it too, do you think the Aria is worth upgrading to from the Stagg or would you go up to something like a used Yamaha instead?
18. http://www.thomann.de/gb/yamaha_slb200_silentbass.htm?gclid=CNWY0_anq7QCFefMtAodDncAGg The stagg is basically a rip off of this, and for the cost they have done well! I prefer the more traditional bridge setup like this using a piezo rather than the NS design being more like a fretless bass on end IMO, I like that big open area like a real Db between the bridge and finger board
19. Yep just a piezo but how much is an Aria? For me the Stagg is purely a stepping stone to something else probably a Yamaha silent bass (stunning IMO) and it does it well from what I can tell and the advice I have been given, my criteria was "If I learn to play the Stagg will I be able to play a real upright in a reasonbly convincing fashion?" the answer from 99% was yes, If you are already certain of sticking with it I am sure there are better EUBs but not for the money. Out of the box I would say the Harley Benton sounds better but after the few little mods needed I prefer the Stagg and the Stagg is more portable if thats an issue?
20.
Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeth - 1986
Nice! do you get a fuzzy feeling when you see pointy guitars? I must get some Megadeth back in my life
21. I am bored of reissues too, mostly reissues of basses that haven't changed in 50 years anyway?
22. I have also seen a Rocket bass the same too Dont worry about the minor niggles like the rattle from the adjustable leg or the high action, they are easy fixes if you follow the instructions in the link from my thread. I am also doing the extra shielding when my copper foil arrives. Strings and nut are not too bad on mine either
23. Nirvana blew the cobwebs off proper music to kick the 90's off imo
24. Hopefully do my back some good then in the long run, I need to start swimming again but I can't go until the scar on my busted up wristhas healed fully
25. I'm an ABBA baby
