My modded affinity jazz is brilliant! Also as they are a bit thinner they are super light, I used mine for wedding and function gigs if it was a 2 hour + set

Basses that have come and gone this year.
stingrayPete1977 replied to Highfox's topic in General Discussion
In- 1979 mm stingray and an electric upright bass, also a shuttleMax 9.2 amp (awesome!) Out- does not compute I'm not buying any gear next year though......well maybe a carbon bow for the upright.....and a set of strings for it which cost more than a few basses I have owned........and maybe a classic ray 5 stingray in tobacco burst........... -
Just watched it! I'm new to Db but already love Gary Karr
You have an issue about re-issues? I hope you don't start to like them and then decide you don't like them later on again because then you'd have a re-issue about re-issues
EBMM have re issued a sterling as the classic re issue but it was not an issue in the first place, I have an issue with that I am always amazed at how good the condition of peoples 57 P basses are or I think wow nice 75 Jazz thats mint, Oh hang on they missed the Ri off their sig -
I played an EUB today (and I liked it)

I must admit I am looking forward to trying the sub boost on full through my ShuttleMax 9.2 and 2x12T cab So far I am using just a tad to warm it up but that is through a 1x10 cab in the house. Muttley must be having some bass GAS now damn Basschat! -
Do you have to have some kind of training or a licence to own one of those?
Indeed, each to his/her own .
Maybe the Aria is for you then? If you dont get on with it I could buy it off you at a knock down price -
Stagg is piezo only, yes. I also have an Aria and personally I much prefer the piezo, so much that I'll probably remove the mag.
Well there you go I think the mag on the Aria spools the look so I would take it off If I did not use it too, do you think the Aria is worth upgrading to from the Stagg or would you go up to something like a used Yamaha instead? -

I prefer the more traditional bridge setup like this using a piezo rather than the NS design being more like a fretless bass on end IMO, I like that big open area like a real Db between the bridge and finger board -

Yep just a piezo but how much is an Aria? For me the Stagg is purely a stepping stone to something else probably a Yamaha silent bass (stunning IMO) and it does it well from what I can tell and the advice I have been given, my criteria was "If I learn to play the Stagg will I be able to play a real upright in a reasonbly convincing fashion?" the answer from 99% was yes, If you are already certain of sticking with it I am sure there are better EUBs but not for the money. Out of the box I would say the Harley Benton sounds better but after the few little mods needed I prefer the Stagg and the Stagg is more portable if thats an issue? -
Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeth - 1986
Nice! do you get a fuzzy feeling when you see pointy guitars? I must get some Megadeth back in my life

I am bored of reissues too, mostly reissues of basses that haven't changed in 50 years anyway? -

I have also seen a Rocket bass the same too Dont worry about the minor niggles like the rattle from the adjustable leg or the high action, they are easy fixes if you follow the instructions in the link from my thread. I am also doing the extra shielding when my copper foil arrives. Strings and nut are not too bad on mine either -
Nirvana blew the cobwebs off proper music to kick the 90's off imo
Thats an eclectic mix youve got going on! Ive found that pop or rock just doesnt work with an upright. With the obvious exceptions I cant even play it properly. Anything I play on it has to have a swing. I think this is common knowledge. Whats also common knowledge is Im pretty crap to. If we had a 'Whos the crappest' I think I'd win matey A
Upside down-Paloma Faith has a nice swing to it and you can get around the neck a bit if you like too, nice tune for the upright I think

Well I have been Jazzing now! set a nice little tempo up on the Alesis and played a few improvs in the Minor Jazz scale from a book I have and then went to the Blues man! in the G7th scale for a bit and some swinging blues in A7th I have also played B-52's, Blondie and Fleetwood Mac on it The TC Polytune is handy as its so fast and acurate you watch for the intonation as you play which helps you see just how near the nut you need to get the first two semi tones, I can already feel myself getting lazy and not reaching far enough for them after a while, my wrist hurts and my shoulder blades are killing, I think thats enough for today!

Ah that's worth noting then, on the pmt site you can actually see the stagg logo on the picture but I guess they might be made in different factories? -
Or face of the fingerboard to the underside of the string for bluejays fretless's'sss-es?
+1 How are people measuring their action by the way? Aren't you supposed to measure it with 1st fret and (something like) 20th fret fretted?
That would be the releif your talking about surely? general rule of thumb appears to be from the top edge of the 12th fret to the underside of the strings I'd say. As for releif I go for press down on the first fret (or capo) then hold down at the 13th fret, I like to be able to just get a tuneful note by pressing down on the string between the two fretted areas, some folk can drive a bus under or often reffered technically as 'the bow and arrow' setup

I have gone from curios idea to here in a week! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/194276-just-ordered-my-first-eub-total-noob-what-have-i-done/ Thomanns delivered super fast but you could get overnight from PMT if you are really desperate to have it before christmas, they list it as an eastwood but its the same, even has Stagg on the headstock. Unless you are thinking full on Aria or NS design etc? The mods done to my Stagg this morning have already made it go from a £350 model to a £500 IMO and took no time at all I believe the Stagg is a rip off of the Aria too so you may well like it. -
Pete what stuff are you playing on your new girl? I could do with a few things to play along to. A
Well so far I have just took some stuff from our set to try which funnily enough opens with Moondance! It is quite an odd set anyway as this band is only just getting going and some of the tracks are just from the singer & guitarist's acoustic duo set, things in the pipe line are very different. Paloma Faith 'stone cold sober' and 'upside down' worked OK Valerie in the Amy Winehouse style worked OK 9-5 Dolly Parton! Moves like jagger Maroon 5 was quite effective Love Cats by The Cure obviously Rolling in the Deep Adele you could play on an elestic band and a shoe box TBH By then my wrist was getting really sore and I gave up for a bit, I am just playing them in the same style really but you could improvise over those if you have more skill than me which would be difficult not to
