1. Tried one when I bought my first Ray5, hated it! I am sure there are good ones out there and maybe with a pack of proper strings and some tools I could of made it much better but I am not the only person to say they are like a 4 string with a B string rather than a 5 string. If you like that I would be having a serious look at a Mayones Jabba Classic 5 Hand made, gorgeous, bang on the same budget and different to everyone else http://www.bassdirec...ba_5_Black.html
2. I know of a guy who picked up two '59 Gibson Les Pauls for £3500, did not know what they were and felt that a fair price to give the owners widdow as he knew they were old, had them both evaluated and one had at some point received a neck repair (done well) sold at auction for £80'000 the other was the same as one sold at auction a few weeks earlier for £250'000! The new owner contacted the widdow and they gave the £80'000 to the RNLI as the previous owner was a lifeguard down south, AFAIK this guy still has the other
3.
You'll find what you need in the for sale sections in here. Far better value than S/H in the shops or ebay for that matter. You just need to get into the habit of checking all the time. My budget these days is not at all dissimilar to yours. Would you believe that the stack you see here cost just a little bit more than that ? £80 for the 1153, £80 for the 2102 and £80 for the AH150-7. £240 for a mini stack of doom which I can break down into bite sized chunks. Way better than whatever you can buy new. This is definitely NOT for sale, but just pointing out what can be available if you're resourceful. Incidentally there's a matching pair of these cabs for sale on here right now for very similar money. If I could find another amp head, I'd be tempted.
Thats some rig for the money! Nice work
4. I'm a sparky and this is normally caused by what we call a floating earth, the most obvious causes would be either a lack of earth at the socket at the venue or a faulty ext lead/4 way adaptor etc. Obviously you can't check the venues sockets now so double check the leads and fwiw a proper pat test could reveal a fault that the multimeter can't as a proper pat tester or a insulation resistance tester 'megger' puts a high voltage through as it tests where a multimeter does not. The reason for the shock is because all the gear we use especially stuff with windings or moisture has a very small leakage to earth hence why we can't have rcd's set at 0mA (usually 30mA instead), if the venues socket was taking the leakage as it should everything works fine but if that earth is missing in the chain then that little bit of voltage goes down the mic's earth as everything is connected obviously, you are then the easiest path to earth. Now imagine if the lead entering your pa had a loose wire that suddenly came free of its terminal and landed on the metal casing inside straight to earth, the only earth is the next poor bugger who grabs a mic to see why the pa has gone quiet who gets the whole 230v until they either drop the mic or the fuse blows! Plug in testers that show 3 lights for live neutral and earth can be bought for a few quid at maplins, b&q or even ebay, a local sparky should be able to pat test your leads for a couple a quid per lead and a mug of coffee Did that make any sense?
5. I'm sitting here with a broken wrist, that really sucks mate and worries me a bit (lot) Looks a cracking deal so santa should be putting that under someones tree soon
6. Looks like there is some inca gas building up right here!
7. I have sent an email to the guy I know and told him where to look! Black one is just like mine
8. Ebs freak posted two in a row! Null and void Or Bilbo wins?
9. You make it sound so simple TimR! Like many of us here I have done allsorts of stuff, spent years doing pubs and clubs with a blues rock band at the same time in an indie rock band doing weddings, functions and a few pubs etc, after 5 years of functions doing covers its been quite nice to play in an originals band again even to small (very small sometimes!) Audiences that appreciate our skills. That said I have done that for a couple of years along with some function dep gigs to keep my hand in and have just started a new function/pub covers band and will be back at it earning a few quid next year once my broken arm is fixed! As for bribing people with cds etc if you give 20 away that £20 per gig at cost plus a few t-shirts its going to get expensive every week, sure we could do it now at our age but we are too old for fame and fortune in this fickle world and thinking back to my teens it would of been too expensive to do. Audience reaction after your first song should be enough to tell where its going imo/e usually downhill for me
10. That's not really my point at all but hey what the heck who cares
11. Should be a nice little bundle of strings and plectrums etc on its way other than that I'd keep it.
12. I do both with varying degrees of success, sometimes its busy sometimes its empty regardless of what we do, if the previous band does not watch us i dont watch them, sad but true. If they are on first i always watch though.
13. Some people would rather play their own music for free to a handful of people than a packed out venue bashing out mustang sally, if they did not we would have no new bands to do covers of at functions, not even sex on fire!
14.
I think it's awesome. Since it's already deviated into maple v rosewood and back again, I think the REAL question is, which is best? 1. Mark King playing fingerstyle on a maple-boarded ash-bodied Ray through a 100 watt all-valve amp into a broken-in BF Super 12, or 2. Flea playing slap on a rosewood-boarded modulus through a 300 watt class D head into a fresh Baer ML-212.
Always flea
15.
Is this one still going? It must be a record!
Its record that just has a looped noise at 25hz on it, parp!
16.
I never take a crowd for granted but we do our homework. We've done the usual London circuit which was on these sames lines....hasn't everyone..?? But any mistakes we make..we don't tend to make again. 1 gig of this ilk is kind of forgiveable but you should get the message about what works for you and what doesn't. This is also why I like money to be a factor in these gigs... it SHOULD focus the minds on what needs to be done. We have this 'bunch of youngsters experience thing' all the time and, tbh, they will have to get their arse in gear as does everyone else. That allpies to any band as well, as far as I am concerned... For me, I was working function circuits at 16 or 17 and it was a great learning curve. I have the most time for kids who will promote their own shows and also come along and support others.. Depends on your emphasis, but you can either do the gigs that get you out to play... or you can do the gigs that you wnat to do, but you have to work it. There are gigs out there, you just have to get them...but it all comes down to whether people will buy what you are selling and there are no garauntees in that...
In the same way you think these gigs sound bad many 17 year olds would hate doing the function circuit, I know I would of done
17. The time people are spending breaking in cabs could be spent eating a pie, practicing a tricky riff or picking their nose all of which I have probably done whilst my new cabs sit dormant waiting for their first gig Lets be serious just for a moment, someone playing a p bass with flats through an ashdown rig compared to ebs freak playing his gb bass through an ebs rig is going to be 1000000 times more different than anything breaking the speaker in will do.
18. Maybe we should have a winter rig made of old worn out cabs?
19.
Is any bass worth 1500?
All the ones that sell for £1500
