For me they really overlap, I have a 2007 Ray 5 which is the very last of the ceramic pickup Ray 5s before they went back to Alnico like the very early ones, its got all of the latest updates other than the pickup ie striaght selector knob, battery box up near the horn rather than towards the bridge, new ramp style pickup cover and would of had the new compensated nut but I have a 2004 fretted neck on it as it was a fretless when new! I also have a 2010 Ray which I bought new that has the all the latest spec including the Alnico pickup which in paralel mode (again just having a switch on the 5s and not the 4s makes them a bit more sterling like) gives you the obvious Stingray sound that the ceramic ones lacked. So sound wise It will depend on what year you go for but the pre 2007 ones will sound more like each other than ones made later due to the shared ceramic pickup, im not sure what the sterling preamp is like or if its different at all? Body wise Sterlings are a bit smaller/lighter and on four string models the nut width is more Jazz where a Ray is more P but again with the extra girth of a 5 thats less obvious so they blur together again using what looks like the same neck! So in the 4 string world they are totally different, in the 5 string world the body is a different shape! What would be more powerful / give most volume?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Walker's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ah. We play folkabilly popgrass. With flatwounds. Does that make a difference ?
Is it progressive popgrass or regular popgrass?, does anyone in the band have dreadlocks?, as they really mess up the response of the xmax doogle filter ratings. -
Im not arsed what the neck finish is as I always run 1200 grit paper over it end to end anyway, you can easily bring back even a gloss painted neck with t cut if you were to sell it on, my '79 Ray I did with wire wool as the finish has been mostly worn off anyway, its lovely now!
The only time I check the action is when I buy a bass, unless I take it to a luthier to be set up. From then on I adjust the truss rod in Spring/Autumn, if the weather dictates it`s needed, and that`s all.
+1 If the bridge is good its going to be the neck that has moved not the saddles, I think this is the root of a lot of crap basses where people try to lower the saddles to get over the over bowed neck. Obviously if I have swapped to a new gauge of strings then it has to be done then too but I have only gone from 40's to 45's in 20+ years!

Depends if you use a bass with maple or rosewood fingerboard! -
valve and solid state- what's the difference?
stingrayPete1977 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think I could manage playing with it held like an upright, enough to keep going to practice and go over the simple songs but the cast is under my palm so I cant really get a neck between it and my fingers what you done to your leg? -

Only joking, would be if the missus had said yes, I did ask and pointed out that I will tell her I told you so in a few years! -
Yes, that helps immensely, thank you How is the wrist these days?
No problem I tried to keep it simple before the boffins get here to amaze you with their knowledge! Had my operation and the cast comes off 2 weeks on Monday, it's already quite stiff so I will need physio -

I don't see the op as a vs argument thread, just that he wanted to understand the terms used. I'm sure they are in the pinned thread but anything containing vs is normally just a which bass is best for metal, do I need to read and why do people use five string basses if billy Sheehan doesn't thread! -
Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?

Has Leona Lewis got a personality? I thought it was locked away in a tin somewhere with Andy Murray's? -
Friend of mine was invited onto this years show. He knew exactly how far he was getting.
Why have none of these people gone to the press? Did he go on the show anyway? -
valve and solid state- what's the difference?
stingrayPete1977 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Amps and Cabs
In simple terms most amps have a pre amp to amplify the tiny voltage the guitars pickup creates, that amplified signal goes to the eq section of the amps controls but is still only a smallish voltage, too small to power a decent speaker at least so it then goes to the power amp usually controlled by the master volume knob. So you could have a solid state pre amp and power amp (solid state) a valve pre amp and valve power amp (all valve) Or a combination of the two usually valve pre amp and solid state power amp. Just to confuse you my ShuttleMax 9.2 has both a solid-state pre amp and eq and a valve powered eq which can be selected on their own or mixed together, that signal then goes to a 900 watt solid state (class D) power amp. It's one of the most flexible all in one amps ever made not just a solid-state pre amp with a valve that can be added in for effect like most amps. As the amplifier sections are seperate you can use the same preamp and eq controls with any size power amp hence all the versions of the same amp but bigger output models. The main reason valve pre amps exist is taste, a valve can give a more natural and sometimes fuller sound, it can also be easily overdriven to create just the right ammount of distortion at the lower volume before going to the power amp so you can have a bit of dirt even at practice volumes. Does that help? -
Seems to have disappeared from the website... Sold already?
-
I think if it's active in reality you can dial in or out the minor difference it makes, if it's a passive bass its maybe more of an issue.

Another good quality B string on a 34 scale bass, no need for all that wonky fret rubbish

You have done the right thing by not having one their cabs though

Just tried an American Standard Fender P5....great bass!
stingrayPete1977 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got an Oly White Fender P5 and I just love it! Build quality seems as good as any other Fender I've tried. Although in no way exotic I just find it sits in the mix, be it live or recorded, like no other bass I've owned. I haven't changed the strings in a year and it still records great, whereas my Stingray 5 sounds dull after just a few weeks. I think the P5 is criminally underrated!
So your finding a passive P with year old strings to be more lively than a ray with strings a few weeks old? You do know it needs a 9v battery in the back of it? I could be interested in trying one of these P5's you know and in that colour combo.......hmmm......gas....... -
Guitar loudspeakers are a different animal. And just to clarify, I'm not saying that drivers don't 'break in'; I'm suggesting that break-in is not audible in the context of a speaker system.
You could 100% hear it on our 15" pa speaker, sounded like someone had forced a lump of foam behind the grill or as the eBay comment you laughed at 'stiff', I agree. Bit like having an ashdown amp my point is more that you may as well just get on with gigging it, I would have no trouble dialling it out with the 900 watt Shuttle Max 9.2
