1.
I use the word 'chummy' as in he tries hard but it doesn't really work. There is a lot of huff and puff but no real zing or panache in the end product. He isn't a slick enough player for the things he tries to do but hey, I bet he is laughing all the way to the bank. In a way, not the type of player you'd recommend someone check out but his lines are flash enough to impress on a basic level. I think they work as a band though... Although I wouldn't call them my thing.
I hear he rates you very highly Its not that Im impressed on a basic level, I dont need to hear an overly complex piece of music for it to be enjoyable, sometimes it is sometimes it is not, but as long as its enjoyable Im happy. All this over anylzing the basses, amps and complexity of the bass lines over shadows your brains natural function of deciding if you like it or not.
2. She has plenty of mojo thats for sure, it is a bit odd gigging with gear worth more than the car, even just my practice night gear is worth a lot more (genz shuttle 3.0, Genz 1x12 cab and one of my Ray 5s).
3. I'm not sure If I could actually do it! It's my perfect dream bass other than the missing B string.
4.
Haha I can always do you a swap for the pre eb stingray.
+1500 my way maybe!
5. If the Streamliner loses I have £200 in cash?
6. Im imune gas wise to the Coral red actually, but that neck and headstock look awesome!, I want either powder blue or the green one, but mainly the tobacco one with a white guard like a John Deacon 5 String! Mine is Ash but very light, the neck radius is what sold it too me actually so I need to try some earlier ones and see what they are like, mine is very flat across the back, I was expecting old skool fat and chunky with a high action but its slim and fast!
7.
I don't know if you're aware but your 82 is probably a Jackson Charvel Ray - according to Sterling Ball, they made them for a while early 80s - I'd try and fund a Classic Ray than sell that. If I had any money I'd make you an offer!!
Is that a good or bad thing? Its not pointy enough to be one of theirs anyway, Rawk!
8.
Will try and get one of my pics back up here. I didn't pay £2k for mine though!!!
Busted! I love your bass
9. Have you seen Gunsfreddy's? I have just had a new motorbike or I would of dropped the bomb to see what the boss said! Next year at least and thats if work is OK
10.
Likewise we all drive round in £ks worth of cars which could be banged, smashed or stolen.
You have not seen 'Vera' my mushy pea green £930 Morris 1000 then?
11. Your avatar gives me gas I'm right on the brink again of selling my pre EB to fund a classic 5!
12.
The old pre-EBs I really like as well but I don't think they look that different - very variable weight (up to 15 lbs!!!!!), maybe a little mojo from age, and sometimes variable quality. I think the Classic Ray is an example of where a new bass is a good bet.
You know you're as sad as me and can spot the missing fret marker from 200 yards though! If you could garantee the pre EB being a good one then I would still take a pre EB if I were after a 4 string, they have a ceratin magical something.
13. Just read it again and he says he bought a better fretted neck. I would still keep that neck though, it could be put 99% right, It might turn out to be a right fook up in 10-20 years time!
14. Not sure where the rest of it is? A mint condition whole '76 would be £2500+ maybe he has decided its worth more in bits?
15. Man up Jose No idea how it compares with the John East version?
16. I dont know, if it were '77 it would be no more than £50-100 in that state IMO, '76 if it were mint who knows £500+, as it is???
17. I have a feeling this is the one that I bid on ages ago that needed a lot of work, but its turned out nice and is clearly a genuine seller, the one I was outbid on at about £900 needed a hole filling where the 3 band EQ had required a jack socket in the body like a new EBMM one, had the 2 band circuit missing and various other bits, but it was a genuine 76' so there is a good chance it was this one before the work was done. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item43b1a1b7d3 I wonder what an unmolested 76' with radio knobs would fetch?
18. What a shame, first year of production neck ruined! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Musicman-Stingray-Bass-neck-VERY-EARLY-1-Nov-1976-pre-Ernie-Ball-marked-fretless-/330762155935?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4d02f5f79f Interested to see what it fetches......
19. Glad your a max'd out bass guy too Matt and +1 for a late 80's early 90's Ray for a good comprimise around the £900 mark.
20. I'd say the sound is the going to be the least different thing about them too, a different amp used on a pre EB, Classic or regular 2 band EBMM would make more difference over all, One looks really cool, one looks even cooler still and the other is the reason the other two exist and looks the coolest of all three
21. Ears first, fly sh*t if they are out there second or if it's worth getting it bang on.
22.
so translated... this bass will give you.... 1) something that might increase the sustain 2) something to stop the sustain 3) softer versions of maple less suitable for a bass neck than non figured 4) a shiney thing 5) a different sticker on it 6) another shiny thing 7) pretty colours. and 8) possibly a 5th string
See they got me with number 8! This is what the Ray 5 should of been in '87 other than the slab body IMO, I love my 5's but they are Silouhette basses really aren't they? The classic has the best of everything, basically a pre EB with a fancy neck, 6 bolt neck plate and wheel of fortune but with the mute bridge with the string thru option and the 2 band EQ, if it had a contoured body it would be even better but not really a pre EB copy which is what it is rather than an 80's EBMM Ray copy as they were contoured from day one in '84.
23. Flea really has not done that much slapping for a long time, It does not help that he has a style that is quite funky even when playing fingered which sounds almost like he is slapping even when he is not, the Guy Dave in my sig at the bottom has a similar bass playing style but plays no slap at all. Like a lot of people we hear what is prominent from a band/artiste and presume thats all they do, some of Flea's best lines are very melodic and gently played in fact..... 4 mins on is the best bit of the best Chili's songs IMO If your looking for Richard Bona or Janek stuff sure its nothing like but you cant say there is no groove there, you just cant!
24.
You turn the bass all they way up? I normally don't go beyond a quarter of its travel, or a bit more perhaps.
Oh yes it's FTW there's no thump down there Jose, come to the dark side
