Sandberg Ken Taylor Basic HH vs Musicman Stingray HH
stingrayPete1977 replied to hollowsbass's topic in Bass Guitars
Nice post sime17 I have gas for both the Lakland and G&L, the Laklands don't have quite as much bite as a Ray IMO but they have a cracking range of useable tones and match the EBMM for build quality, great basses. -
Bridges - BBOT vs hiMass
stingrayPete1977 replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
I have had them where the saddles move across the back plate and where the screws unwind themselves until the saddle is sitting on the skunt, whether other people have or have not even after 50 years or are in some way offended by that makes no difference to me, my basses are mine theirs are theirs as long as we are happy with our own basses it's all cool. Plus like Wayne says my Badass looks cool -
Your making me want one now! Is it much better than a 9.0? If I can pick a 9.0 up cheap I quite fancy one at some stage, I don't need one nor a 9.2 but since when did that matter? I will have a look at using my 6.0 as a power amp too, thanks.

Guilty as charged although most of the stuff by the band in my sig is fairly complex (for me anyway) normal covers Im not so bad for it
Rumour is the EU release will come with a Bass patch too . http://rocksmith.ubi...oads/index.aspx
Yes I think the bass version will be available on the Spectrum ZX81 too as its only got 4 strings etc! May aswell beat the guitarists to it before they think of it -
Hey great news, I found an etching of your first gig!
For anyone that does not read Hebrew that bit at the top right says "Rolling Stones tonight!, doors open at 8, Support will be Cliff Richards playing a medley of his Christmas number 1 hits of the past 200 years". "no glass bottles beyond this point".

I'd be happy to gig with either -
That sounds like a fab gig
Hell yeah! +1

I hear the standard one sounds good if it's in one piece! I knew it would be some kind of tampering

It's just that the pre EB is more of a hand made bass I guess, neck joints are never going to be as good as a computer guided effort, the bad ones (sorry Musicman20) are down human error as its their poor fitting or poor programming skills rather than the actual machine at fault there. Then modern paint finishes are more durable and hard as nails, again computers can be used to help mix the paints and check they are applied to the exact thicknesses the paint manufacturers suggest, 6 bolt neck joint and the awesome wheel of fortune truss rod adjuster speak for themselves. On the other hand the choice of quality timber is on the decline and for me it's the little quirks that make it more special as soon as you pick it up New or old they are still very solid bass guitars though! -
Started guitar at school 25 years ago, started a band over christmas '89 using a borrowed bass then had an encore electric guitar for christmas 1990 instead, I later went almost exclusively bass in 1993 as I always got drawn back to it even though by then I had saved up all my own money to buy a decent Ibanez guitar (all the rage in the early 90's!). If I did it all again I would of learnt to read music earlier and maybe gone to a 5 string earlier too but that does not bother me as much as the reading and theory skills I lack
Are D-tuners common in metall rock ?
I played in a rock band for years where I had to tune up and down all gig, I didn't realise hip shots existed then. Not an issue these days
-
do they have issues when trying to go through metal detectors at airports ???
Well they would have take those big gladiator boots with all the buckles up the sides off, and remove all the stuff from various holes in their faces!

I'm pretty sure we have some metal heads around here with Hipshots that drop to A?
-
Someone might of been messing around previously? A fan of Jazz basses maybe? If they have and they are not total idiots then the wires might be long enough to re solder them back as they should be, some of them have the area to be soldered on show anyway failing that. If only one coil is working then its neither series nor parallel which sounds more like someone has done that rather than the coil failing, I'm not sure I have ever heard of one failing? Pics of the back of the pickup please

If anything the new EBMM models are even better built than the pre EB ones and that's from someone who loves pre EB Rays so there are no worries on that score. Resale values will be better long term on a Ray, some second hand bargain out there now could see no depreciation at all, maybe even go up a little over the next ten years? I like sandbergs but I'm told they don't sound anything like a Ray really so if it's the sound he wants I'd go for the real thing. That sounds a bit harsh but what ever anyone says its essentially a copy. That's my biased view -
Is there a way I can run my 3.0 through my 6.0 and miss out the valve?
-
Just ordered a set of regular ones, almost did it but £35 is a mouthfull especially when I need 3 packs!

Eggy beard is never good mate, I shave once a fortnight so it's anything between clean shaven and fairly recently become homeless person, all of which can work in conjunction with an egg sandwich thankfully

A lot of people swear by a 45 G string , I have found that you need to move the pickup even further away after you put the thicker strings on so don't be afraid to back it off even more, the ceramic pickup has a huge output mine is almost flush with the pick guard where the little thumb rest ramp is with 45-130's on it. I use pink EB 40-125's but have just gone up to the green 45-130 on the black one, I like the 130 so I'm about to order two packs with the takings from last nights gig

Sounds about right mate

You know what I think I prefer the FET on my 3.0 to the tube on my 6.0
I've got an imperial Allen key set and I don't think I've ever used it. All hex bolts I've ever met seem to be metric ( not sure about US Fenders though, but my MIJ is metric ). The bridge screws are tiny, maybe 2mm ? Halfords and good bike shops ( I don't count Halfords as good ) sell cheap multi key sets, in a penknife style format for just a few squid.
Most USA basses appear to be Imp, I know mine are although I use the 2mm as the feeler gauge just as a two fingers up!
-
Buy one of those 20 piece imperial and metric allen key sets that sell for under a tenner and you'll never need to ask this question again whatever bass you have.
I cant plus 1 this enough!!!! They also make good feeler gauges so you can see whats moving where with truss rod adjustments or just to compare as the seasons change, find your favourite one for action height and put some tape around it to remind yourself next time or to see if your necks are moving in or out. £7 Maplins all in a handy box
