1. Funnily enough I have just done a string change on my blue one ready for tonights gig, I tried holding a string near the pickup and the myth about the pole pieces is totally busted, even when the string is level with the pickup where its never going to be the magnets still have a lot of pull! They overlap from pole piece to pole piece would make it neither here nor there, I'd say you could put the strings between the pieces and hear little to no difference
2. Absolutley baffled by it but it's awesome all the same! I dont need the extra notes and all my favourite bands play P basses anyway etc etc
3.
I've gotta be honest, I've never ever measured the action on any guitar or bass, and I used to do setups/repairs professionally. I think that you can't just rely on the measurement at the 12th fret to judge whether the instrument is set up as well as it can be. Depending on the amount of relief in the neck and the height of the saddles (and other factors) the same measurement at the 12th fret could apply to quite different setups. I always just do it by feel and sound; I put as little relief in the neck as possible (depending on the instrument) and then keep lowering the action 'til I get a slightly unacceptable level of fret buzz, and then bring it back up a touch. Hey presto, the action is as low as it can be on that particular instrument, regardless of the measurements!
Which is exactly what some people don't want! What's right for one person even a pro won't be right for another, learning to do your own adjustments is the only way of saving money on having a shop set it up how they want it.
4. Any idea what the 5 string nut width is? I can see the 38mm nut being a big selling point, a lot of folks ask about options for a Stingray with a narrower nut on here.
5. I only have one make of bass ,one make of amp and one make of cab, oh hang on I do have a Jazz bass and an acoustic bass
6. Cant say fairer than that I could quite fancy a 2 band 5'er, Im saving up for a ClassicRay5 but this could be good too? Hmmm... The walnut stain is really cool, I want a pre EB in that colour. Is the 5 string really only 38mm at the nut or is that a typo regarding the 4 string model? If I could get the 5 in the walnut with a 2 band EQ and the normal body/pickguard shape I would be all over this
7. Cool got in first! Looks really nice GW
8. Anyone done the "It's been in the oven too long and melted" joke yet?
9. Its funny how we all start off scared of truss rods, I know I did, then once you have given them some hammer its all fine. I think it stems from the old Fenders where the neck had to keep being taken off, people just never did it themselves and the "take it to a shop" attitude developed? I do wonder if some of the unplayable crap was just a case of needing a setup although I do remember a mates Hohner strat copy that had a massive high action and no amount of adjusting made it any better! Messing about with bitsa basses and projects is the way forward I guess, once you have made a few bits from all over the world via eBay come together and play well you have in cracked
10. Will the £50 cover the petrol to collect it? Oh hang on they want you to give them £50 In all honesty it's got to be worth £50 hasn't it.
11. I'm not sure Clarky, might even be worth just taking it out and cleaning the valve socket and all the pots from behind, it's got to be worth swapping the valve first as its a cheap fix if it works and a spare valve if it isn't Anyone else got any thoughts/knowledge on the way valves go?
12. To be fair Genz don't make the valves if it is that, as long as it went through the QC tests ok it would just get shipped out. Some people had problems early on with the switch mode power supply again not made by Genz either (bang and olufson) but I'm not sure what the symptoms of that fault is, I'd of thought total output loss?
13. Well it won't be the amp having problems, like I said I run my 3.0 through my 2x12 Genz cab and it powers it at gig volume, a 10 on its own is going to be limited in the same way any single 10 is but with the extension cab I'd say it will be tasty
14. I'm not sure about winning yet but I can see what I'm trying to do, it's a start
15. As someone who was against 5 string basses and thought reading was for jazzers and pit work until a couple of years ago Im finding both the extra string and the basic reading skills I have learnt in the last 18 months are paying dividends now, I have a few dep gigs with a function band and I'm motoring through the tracks I need to learn. The reading is great for nailing the first 8 bars just like the record then I'm using the extra bit of theory that I have innevitably learnt as a side line to jam away nicely once the tune gets going. The best bit however is the ability to change keys at the drop of a hat, most of the tunes I'm working out by ear but I'm purposefully playing them all off the B string (nothing to do with any extended ranges) as they are in different keys to the originals that I'm listening to (we are not having any rehersals at all for the gig on friday and I have 13 new tracks to learn), once I have the bare bones all I need to do is move it up or down into the key that the guitarist has told me its in by email. 5 strings and reading is good, I get it now, appologies once more to those I pissed off a few years ago arguing against both of these
16.
Nothing wrong with doing it this way but it doesn't really take much longer to just learn the intervals outright.
This is where the arguements start as regards learning theory rather than just hearing/feeling/jamming it, I have never really learnt intervals (only really knew what they were a few years ago!) but I have known for years what a 4th or a 5th or an octave etc sound like in relation from any note I happen to be playing. I kind of dont need to learn them now but that also frustrates me in a way where I wish I had done it the right way years ago instead as it would of bought more knowledge with it Im sure.
17.
Your style of music can help to choose to a degree, but it's down to personal choice. There's a lot of combos in your price bracket in the " four sale" section on here. I would try a few out in a shop if I was you, but the good thing about buying 2nd hand is that if you don't like it, you can sell it at no loss. Going by your taste, it might be worth trying an Ashdown combo. They're described as " wooley".
Great minds think alike, I started typing ages ago then the phone went
18. What a great first bass, lucky you!! Now Im not a massive fan of these but I think an Ashdown combo might be up your street from what your saying including the budget you mention. Something from their cheaper range would fit the bill and be good/loud enough for you once you start gigging, they do a variety of amps but the MAG with a 4x10 cab would be a great place to start IMO. If your looking for something smaller for home practice rather than gigs Im sure they do a combo that would suit for that too
19.
I'm fairly new to the Stingray family, wanted one for years but always ended up with something else for one reason or another, now I have one can't see myself being with out one again!
I tried one in the 90's and found it big and clunky, bought a new Bass Collection SGC Nayno in trans green instead (great basses), few years later went to buy a Warwick Jazzman and the pre amp was faulty straight from the factory! I had £1250 in my pocket and bought my first Ray instead, now look at me
20. And the Minor up, Bar rum dum pom bar um dar um ....and down......dar rum pum pom par um dar dum
21. I know its boring but playing scales helps alot here IMO, once they are in your head you can start at a note in your head or hum then sing the scale from there, count the intervals if thats what your after and there you go, la de dar de dar la de dar, and down, bum bum bum bum bum bum bum berrrr...... those who can should be able to enjoy those I cant do all the scales but its a start.
22. I have looked at the ones in the sticky but cant find it, any ideas? Thanks in advance
