1. I'm not sure about winning yet but I can see what I'm trying to do, it's a start
2. As someone who was against 5 string basses and thought reading was for jazzers and pit work until a couple of years ago Im finding both the extra string and the basic reading skills I have learnt in the last 18 months are paying dividends now, I have a few dep gigs with a function band and I'm motoring through the tracks I need to learn. The reading is great for nailing the first 8 bars just like the record then I'm using the extra bit of theory that I have innevitably learnt as a side line to jam away nicely once the tune gets going. The best bit however is the ability to change keys at the drop of a hat, most of the tunes I'm working out by ear but I'm purposefully playing them all off the B string (nothing to do with any extended ranges) as they are in different keys to the originals that I'm listening to (we are not having any rehersals at all for the gig on friday and I have 13 new tracks to learn), once I have the bare bones all I need to do is move it up or down into the key that the guitarist has told me its in by email. 5 strings and reading is good, I get it now, appologies once more to those I pissed off a few years ago arguing against both of these
3.
Nothing wrong with doing it this way but it doesn't really take much longer to just learn the intervals outright.
This is where the arguements start as regards learning theory rather than just hearing/feeling/jamming it, I have never really learnt intervals (only really knew what they were a few years ago!) but I have known for years what a 4th or a 5th or an octave etc sound like in relation from any note I happen to be playing. I kind of dont need to learn them now but that also frustrates me in a way where I wish I had done it the right way years ago instead as it would of bought more knowledge with it Im sure.
4.
Your style of music can help to choose to a degree, but it's down to personal choice. There's a lot of combos in your price bracket in the " four sale" section on here. I would try a few out in a shop if I was you, but the good thing about buying 2nd hand is that if you don't like it, you can sell it at no loss. Going by your taste, it might be worth trying an Ashdown combo. They're described as " wooley".
Great minds think alike, I started typing ages ago then the phone went
5. What a great first bass, lucky you!! Now Im not a massive fan of these but I think an Ashdown combo might be up your street from what your saying including the budget you mention. Something from their cheaper range would fit the bill and be good/loud enough for you once you start gigging, they do a variety of amps but the MAG with a 4x10 cab would be a great place to start IMO. If your looking for something smaller for home practice rather than gigs Im sure they do a combo that would suit for that too
6.
I'm fairly new to the Stingray family, wanted one for years but always ended up with something else for one reason or another, now I have one can't see myself being with out one again!
I tried one in the 90's and found it big and clunky, bought a new Bass Collection SGC Nayno in trans green instead (great basses), few years later went to buy a Warwick Jazzman and the pre amp was faulty straight from the factory! I had £1250 in my pocket and bought my first Ray instead, now look at me
7. And the Minor up, Bar rum dum pom bar um dar um ....and down......dar rum pum pom par um dar dum
8. I know its boring but playing scales helps alot here IMO, once they are in your head you can start at a note in your head or hum then sing the scale from there, count the intervals if thats what your after and there you go, la de dar de dar la de dar, and down, bum bum bum bum bum bum bum berrrr...... those who can should be able to enjoy those I cant do all the scales but its a start.
9. I have looked at the ones in the sticky but cant find it, any ideas? Thanks in advance
10. 2007 onwards are Alnico although my 2007 is a very late ceramic model, the Alnico will give you the typical Ray sound but the ceramic ones sound great too, more twangy to my ears. If your buying new it should have the battery box near the lower horn and the horizontal pickup switch rather than sloping, any shop selling them without those features are trying to sell you an old one as new, that's not a problem as long as the price reflects that
11. Do you want an Alnico or Ceramic pickup?
12. No problems so far, both of mine have 2008 as build dates on the stickers inside. Without you trying one I can't really comment on the sound, it good for me, others don't like them.
13. This thread just makes me think of Richard Bona and the sound of my jaw hitting the floor, riddiculous!
14. The black one in the FS section right now is epic!
15. looking at the head of the adjuster so up the neck towards the headstock if its at the heel or down the neck towards the body if its at the headstock
16. I bet it sounds great with 2 10's I only have one and its not a genz one I do have a Genz 12T though and its nice through that and can power my Genz 2x12T without any trouble too
17. I have the 3.0 and the 6.0, the 3.0 sounds better to me!
18. 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO6D_BAuYCI 100% must of thought the Stingray looked cooler for the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMnjF1O4eH0
19. not as obvious? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pm4fQRl72k 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GugsCdLHm-Q
20.
I'd love confirmation to satisfy my own intrigue. Really? All those songs were fretless? I'm prepared to be wrong, but I'm not sure myself and thought it was more a case that John played very little fretless at all. He sure could and very well. Just didn't think he played as much as the list would suggest. Cool if it is right though! Thanks guys, would love to read more info'!
I have just had a listen and Id say so, Its an official book I have too. 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb-3seZSQ_Q 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t63_HRwdAgk
21. Most people go on the basis that the G is weak so the pickup must need raisng higher and higher until its so close they cant play it then sell it on and chime in telling us they had a Ray and the G was crap so had to sell it on! There is some truth in the EQ needing to be set accordingly to help but I think if all the things that have been mentioned in this thread are acheived first most amps set flat should get you in a useable position often not a bad sound that just needs adjusting to personal taste and playing style.
22. Just looking through this notation book and it has Bicycle race, Crazy little thing called love, Fat bottomed girls, I want it all, Play the game and The show must go on all as fretless tunes. Thats just from the selection in this book so I presume he was quite prolific with his use of fretless basses.
23. Got to be worth swapping the valve first and a good spray with Servisol, its only one little nut that holds the bracket for the valve (neat touch compared to Ashdown's where gravity has to do it!). Let us know how you get on
24. I have a big set of allen keys that I bought from Maplins, I keep them away from all my regular tools just for bass fiddling. I have every possible size for all bridge saddle pins and truss rods etc but they double up as a perfect feeler gauge set for our purposes. I changed the string gauges last week on my black Ray 5 but before I did I found the nearest allen key size from the 12th fret first, then swapped the strings, tuned it up, adjusted the truss until it was back just like it was before, easy
