1. 2007 onwards are Alnico although my 2007 is a very late ceramic model, the Alnico will give you the typical Ray sound but the ceramic ones sound great too, more twangy to my ears. If your buying new it should have the battery box near the lower horn and the horizontal pickup switch rather than sloping, any shop selling them without those features are trying to sell you an old one as new, that's not a problem as long as the price reflects that
2. Do you want an Alnico or Ceramic pickup?
3. No problems so far, both of mine have 2008 as build dates on the stickers inside. Without you trying one I can't really comment on the sound, it good for me, others don't like them.
4. This thread just makes me think of Richard Bona and the sound of my jaw hitting the floor, riddiculous!
5. The black one in the FS section right now is epic!
6. looking at the head of the adjuster so up the neck towards the headstock if its at the heel or down the neck towards the body if its at the headstock
7. I bet it sounds great with 2 10's I only have one and its not a genz one I do have a Genz 12T though and its nice through that and can power my Genz 2x12T without any trouble too
8. I have the 3.0 and the 6.0, the 3.0 sounds better to me!
9. 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO6D_BAuYCI 100% must of thought the Stingray looked cooler for the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMnjF1O4eH0
10. not as obvious? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pm4fQRl72k 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GugsCdLHm-Q
11.
I'd love confirmation to satisfy my own intrigue. Really? All those songs were fretless? I'm prepared to be wrong, but I'm not sure myself and thought it was more a case that John played very little fretless at all. He sure could and very well. Just didn't think he played as much as the list would suggest. Cool if it is right though! Thanks guys, would love to read more info'!
I have just had a listen and Id say so, Its an official book I have too. 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb-3seZSQ_Q 100% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t63_HRwdAgk
12. Most people go on the basis that the G is weak so the pickup must need raisng higher and higher until its so close they cant play it then sell it on and chime in telling us they had a Ray and the G was crap so had to sell it on! There is some truth in the EQ needing to be set accordingly to help but I think if all the things that have been mentioned in this thread are acheived first most amps set flat should get you in a useable position often not a bad sound that just needs adjusting to personal taste and playing style.
13. Just looking through this notation book and it has Bicycle race, Crazy little thing called love, Fat bottomed girls, I want it all, Play the game and The show must go on all as fretless tunes. Thats just from the selection in this book so I presume he was quite prolific with his use of fretless basses.
14. Got to be worth swapping the valve first and a good spray with Servisol, its only one little nut that holds the bracket for the valve (neat touch compared to Ashdown's where gravity has to do it!). Let us know how you get on
15. I have a big set of allen keys that I bought from Maplins, I keep them away from all my regular tools just for bass fiddling. I have every possible size for all bridge saddle pins and truss rods etc but they double up as a perfect feeler gauge set for our purposes. I changed the string gauges last week on my black Ray 5 but before I did I found the nearest allen key size from the 12th fret first, then swapped the strings, tuned it up, adjusted the truss until it was back just like it was before, easy
16. Thanks for your input Jose I knew you were the man for the job regarding the pre amp and I agree on the string gauges too, I have actually just gone to .45 on my black Ray5 to see how I get on as mainly I wanted the 130 B instead of the 125 I had previously, the only word of caution is that if you change the whole set up a gauge the pickup being too close issue is exagerated again, I knew it would be before I hade even opened the packet so It was just a matter of lowering the whole pickup (2 full turns on all three screws) to compensate, its still got more output than the blue Ray5 with the 40s on now so I might even need to go another full turn which will put the ramp section flush with the pickguard! PS congrats on the football too!
17. Oh yeah and the pre EBs are the best
18. Yep I agree with all of that guys that's how I use my SR5 EQs too
19.
Had to look twice at the seller ID on that one.
20. The Marlin guitars were about the same! Awful awful instruments.
21. My next purchase will be a Stingray Classic five, I love my pre EB but play my five 90% of the time so it's a done deal really. As musicman20 knows I went round the houses to buy an Alnico loaded parallel wired Ray5 hence the 2010 in my sig, since falling for the 5 I traded my gorgeous teal sr4 for another 5 as a spare, I now favour the ceramic in the series position bloody gas eh?
22. That's it, a less is more approach using the amps headroom rather than putting the pup too close, even with it quite far away the signal to the amp will be hotter than say a passive p bass or similar. Some people have pushed the pole pieces out more but I have not needed to yet on any of mine. A good bit of trial and error should do the trick, also quite a few of us with the 2 EQ preamp use the bass knob flat out all the time then use the treble pot like a single tone pot, the results are usually good and offer a massive scope in one simple adjustment, I use fingers, pick and the odd bit of slap, it's very easy to dial in a good sound on the fly live if like me when using those different techniques your EQ needs altering to suit.
23. I'd say we should all be measuring off the fret to the underside of the string, that allows for fret height and string gauges. 5mm off the boards not so bad then, he is a wimp!
24.
quite a few people on here - me included - would happily pay you £56.00 if you sell it on
Wheras for me "I'm out" as they say on dragons den!
