1.
To me a "gig" is a job, which means you get paid. You could participate in a "jam" at a club or friend's house. You could go to a "hootenanny" around a campfire. You can "woodshed" at home, or "play" a benefit. A gig is special. You're expected to set that date aside in your calender, show up and put on a professional musical entertainment, for hours specified, and expect payment in return. If anouther musician tells me that "we've" got a gig and wants me to participate, that's what I expect. If you want to call any of these examples a "gig", feel free, just don't change your terminology to your musical mates at the end of the evening in question. "Oh, when I said a "gig" I meant......."
So it turns out there is no such thing as "a charity gig" then even after all the pages about playing for free.
2. I've lined the cavity with copper foil, put Spirocores on it which was a chore involving drilling the bridge block right out, thin foam under the bridge feet (I think I did that), the most important mod that transforms it was ramming a chunk of foam under the strings after length!
3. I'd only say "I've got a gig" if the show couldn't happen without me or a dep arranged to cover for me. A jam night or jam session at someones house even in front of friends isn't a gig however a gig in front of friends at a friends house is imo a gig.
4. I have a lovely upgraded Stagg he can borrow too wouldn't you know 😀
5.
Of course they don`t always pan out so good, but if you don`t give it a go one things for sure, payment and opportunities will certainly not come your way.
I disagree, I've had many many more paying gigs off the back of other paying gigs, I've only had offers of more free gigs off the back of free gigs.
6. I'm starting to wonder if there has only been a few Ricks ever made and were all trying the same ones before 'rightly' moving them on?
7.
Suitably corrected, I'd only read the FB page for the event, where I could find no mention of charity.
It's actually at the top of their big logo thing as "Devons biggest charity festival". No idea where it goes or how how much money is involved.
8. Is it good for metal?
9.
Agreed, however I am concerned about young bands being taken advantage of which was my point. Blue
From my own experience these 'charity' gigs are made up of a mixture of young and old musicians performing.
10. Exactly, I'd want to know more before agreeing to playing it even if it was for a fee! I'm not knocking this particular event btw, if you want your trousers pulling down and don't live in Devon I'm sure there's something similar being run for 'charity' nearer home for all of us.
11. DEVONS BIGGEST CHARITY FESTIVAL That's the tag line, no registered charity number, no corporate charity logos used on the promotional advertising.
12. It says "for various charities" on the official website, I've read it.
13. I'd happily play your village fete dad, It's a worthy cause where the other option is no gig, I've asked three times in this thread what the supported charity (ies) are at this festival and looked on the website to no avail.
14. It would only be jealously if I didn't have another gig, thankfully I'd be declining due to paying commitments
15.
Isn't this jealousy, though..? What difference would it make if the band fee was huge, and the vendor giving stuff away..? Looking after your own affairs I can understand, but looking around to see how others have chosen to do things I find very odd. Just me as usual, I suppose.
Not jealousy, sarcasm.
16.
A Musicman 5 string I owned back in the '80's. Good to play physically, and I persevered with it for a good while, but it only ever had one sound, and that was the dead plank sound................. Possibly why they're still not worth a great deal now compared to the old 4 strings.
That's only because they didn't make an old 5 string Stingray, 1987 onwards Stingray 5s fetch more than 1987 onwards 4s, an 80s Ray 5 is quite a rare bass having only a couple of years on sale in the uk.
17.
Sounds to me like it's the time they go and buy a burger.
Indeed, from one of the food vendors supplying their services for free too?
18.
Rickenbacker 4003. Huge disappointment
That's nonsense there's nothing worse about the 4003 than the other models they make, they're all terrible
19. I agree with blue on that, king and flea are the two most main stream slappers but flea has had far more hits and most without slap or only bits and bobs in a song.
20. Oooh nice
21.
It's being so cheerful that keeps you going Pete.........
Burnt too many times that's all
22. Great price for a lot of fun, I paid the same Just for the strings I've put on mine!
