1.
Yeah. It's still early. I thought "I wouldn't say expert, more experienced hobbyist"
Me too, weekend warrior at best
2.
I'm probably going to be the only person to vote 'other' .
I've joined you, double basses!
3. https://m.thomann.de/gb/db_technologies_opera_12.htm?o=3&search=1506689818 We've got the 10" versions as monitors just as it saved a few quid over the RCF ones and they are great, we could gig with them as the front of house in a small venue no problem. MUCH better than Alto or the unbranded stuff ime.
4. I've got RCF 735s for our function band PA, I'd imagine one of those would sound great and could be pole mounted but cheap they ain't, but, DB technology belong to RCF so something from the DB opera range could be perfect and free to trial from Thomann? Bit like Skoda to Audi.
5. Is it so bad to only want to gig once or twice a month?
6.
Ahhhhh ... Bicester. (You need to be a certain age to get that.)
Yep no idea I'm afraid
7.
The 'dates you cannot do' carries a date: those dates are subject to change later, and it's only accurate at the time I give it to you. So you still need to confirm availabilities... but it saves a LOT of time for the person booking if they can have at a glance a list of dates that for one reason or another should not even be considered. It's not too much to ask, really.
I haven't got a problem telling them when I'm not free so as soon as I book a holiday or a weekend away I'll text the guy who does the majority of the booking as it's essentially his band it also goes into the group chat, we all spend time in various countries and we all have other hobbies, which is what it is for us, I don't want to just share all my free time with them, that's why it's called 'free time'!
8. Same here 735s, typical marquee gig no problem to cover the dance floor and be heard at the back without subs, just one sub would be enough for anything I'd ever need but so far we've not needed any. Two speakers and a tiny xair16 mixer, fantastic!
9. I like a plain board, not many basses out there with non like the proper 90s bass collection basses.
10. I own, store and haul the PA and lights which is a fair contribution along with getting some gigs, organising public liability insurance and PAT testing mine and everyone elses kit.
11. I think as said earlier the main thing is that everyone is on the same page, I don't think it's black and white as to whether you're committed or not though, I've been in bands where I could comfortably dep the whole gig without any practice yet the other members saw anything less than going over the same songs every week at a rehearsal as not being committed. My current band practices infrequently but is better than many I've been in with a weekly practice even though the set list is more demanding, that's because we're all on the same page, no charity gigs and no one needs to gig to eat or pay bills so a monthly gig on average maybe two a month suits us all.
12.
I'm married but my wife understands that the band has first priority on my time. The only time I have failed to turn up at a gig was because I was unconscious in the local A&E after an accident (and a follow up when I was in a wheelchair with my arm in a cast). The band understood the situation, visited me, and arranged a dep as I didn't want us (that is, the band) to miss a gig.
The only fair way is first come first served, I don't think my wife would be happy if I overruled a friend's wedding or a weekend away with a gig booked after.
13. First of all sorry to hear you're not tip top Roger, best wishes from me. I'd be interested in attending another bash and don't mind travelling a bit so Bicester would be fine with me, might give me inspiration to practice more!?
14. I've already got one as an early adopter of speakons being a Genz Benz user for rehearsal space cabs but most people buying these will be hooking them upto modern cabs plus as a back-up head You want to be able to swap the di,kettle ,speakon and input cable quicker than the guitarist can tell a rubbish joke!
15. They could have fitted one of those dual Jack/speakon ones.
16.
To be honest, if someone spoke to me like that then I would quit too. Yes he was disorganised but no need to treat him like a piece of crap.
Reading the email the OP posted again I tend to agree, I think I'd be off and I think his reply was quite reasonable too.
17. But how do you know if your free? I know when I'm not free so that's fine I can tell you that. Whatsapp group, "gig on date x everyone free?" yes or no gets replied to quick enough. I've got too many hobbies which could result in a last minute booking to clear my diary for the band.
18.
It does have a DI 🤔
Ah I didn't know that, no speakon though right?
19.
If someone mentions a gig to me, I put it on my diary with a ? next to it. If something else comes up I query it with the rest of the band. It's not hard. In the old days we used to call it 'pencilling it in'. Actually, that's what I still call it, and do the same for all unconfirmed social and work events. .
Likewise, that said I had to dep out my first ever gig with my current band to play a charity gig for free after my own screw up!
20. You'll need to go to 735 or 745 imo, but it will sound great and you can sell all the existing kit.
21. Tbh I think I'm with the drummer, "you mentioned" the gig in April, nothing else since and it's not on the band's website. I've got an issue with the "dates you can't do" thing too, our guitarist wanted us to give him all the dates we can't do rather than him check for each gig but he's not my dad, if I've got no gig next weekend and I book a weekend away that's my lookout, I'm not going to update my personal free time diary with him on a daily basis as things come up, booked holidays of course no problem and times you already know are out to save checking every time but not my personal free dates for him to book what he likes. Ah bands
22. I still think the lack of a di out is a mistake, a lot of the gigs I do where it would make a handy backup require a di. To me it would make more sense with a di as it would only need to pump out enough for stage monitoring then.
23. Even as someone that doesn't enjoy his music I don't think it matters if someone wants to spend a fortune on what should be a fairly cheap bass only to noodle away on it in their spare bedroom as long as they enjoy it.
24.
I disagree. IMO Jaco has made a contribution to anyone playing bass today, whether they know it or not. Blue
That's why he's wrote "as far as they're concerned".
