1. If your songs are good enough slight variations in style and instruments used shouldn't be a deal breaker, it might be different and from the audience's perspective they might prefer the version with the dep player!
2. If they wanted something more vintage looking than a jazz bass it sounds like they wanted an upright bassist!?
3. If it's a professional band then you can't turn down gigs for each member, with five members you'd have no gigs! Most of the bands reluctant to use deps are the ones where a decent dep could cover it easily, alright now and Brown eyed girl are known my most party/pub/function band bassists
4. What exactly was in the box of the initial demo ones, Jack socket in and out going to a power amp hidden somewhere!? 100 watts less and no speakon compared to my decade old Genz shuttle 3.0 that's not much bigger than it.
5. I think my 2013 usa standard Jazz V is fairly wide, the high mass bridges can go far to wide for me so that should suit you, it's a really nice bass too.
6.
Why are stingrays so expensive I've got major GAS for a Classic 5 in Natural (Black PG) and maple FB
I'm thinking of selling a tobacco burst one
7. Yes so you can play the drum quieter then amplify it, possibly actually to the point that the unamplified drum is louder! Guitarists then bring a Marshall stack to the tickled trout so we've no choice but the wheel out the Ampeg fridge, the whole pub is now rattling and the punters have left but hey "you don't need to Mic a drum kit in a pub"
8.
Quite often guitar shops give out the wrong cases, if it's the right case for the series of bass....if you know what I mean?!
Good shout, my USA standard came with a deluxe case, because someone got the wrong one with theirs.
9.
That wasnt what I was responding too. Dad3353 said his BD was loud enough for any venue, then he miced it. Look at his post. Also, you cant equate stage volume to out front. Even without PA, the rooms we play in If its too loud on stage its too loud out front, and thats with a 20" BD, nothing miced, and small amps. I also play drums and simply change the beater on the BD pedal and modify how hard I hit the drum to control the volume. I like the BD to sound like part of the kit not a sub sonic mush.
Hmmm do you know what a gate and compression does? Our mic'd kick has less subsonic mush than the actual acoustic drum!
10.
Ehh? Surely if the BD is loud enough for any room, then its loud enough. You seem to be suggesting that micing it up will make it quieter????? Surely if its loud enough to be heard in the room, any eq you add to it will not overpower the acoustic sound out front, so will be a waste of time. Just saying.
See my post about using a smaller/quieter kick drum, the rest of the band can then use smaller back line too, generally I've found the larger the stage the quieter it is.
11.
My complaint is that this trend has been adopted by pub bands. You end up paying far more for a PA that used to just have to handle vocal requirements because the kick drum's got to be amplified.
We've got our kick mic'd but it does the exact opposite of what you think, it's compressed and gated so it actually has less swampy noises going on, it then allows for a smaller and quieter kick drum on stage, the only thing the audience hears is the tight thump distributed evenly around the room.
12. Replace the word drummer with bassist and I still agree but there's a huge proportion of people here that want exactly that!
13. Do we know for certain it's the sound crew causing this? How often do we see members here declaring they they will only perform with 'their sound', no pre eq di or no di at all regardless of whether the sound they are giving the desk is of any use or not, are drummers demanding a foh to match their on stage sound as many folk here say they do with bass rigs?
14. I was in Croyde years ago and there was a great country/blues band playing in the busy pub in the village, lovely thump coming from the band I couldn't see, when I eventually got sight of them on my way to the gents I could see a Stingray, it wasn't what I was expecting but it sounded bang on.
15.
It depends, doesn't it? I've certainly developed a lot when playing in bands with people who are better musicians than me, sort of on the job learning. But I've also been in bands with people who are stuck at their level. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the bands dis somewhat level down rather than up. No matter how good the lead guitarist is, if the rhythm guitarist can't get the backing chords right behind the solo then (without wanting to get into another debate about what the audience notices) that's the level you're stuck at. I'm pretty much with Happy Jack here. the best bands I've been in from a personal and professional point of view, are the ones where we were the closest mates, and all played to the relevant musical standard required (and for one in particular it wasn't the highest musical standard, but it was appropriate for the gigs and the audience we were getting)
Lots of bands have done well with mixed abilities, look at oasis! I could have said U2 but I didn't
16.
Wikipedia is you friend in this instance: https://en.wikipedia...i/Post-hardcore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06GOu9JjHDM
I like it Punk then.
17. Most of the damage on my instruments I've done myself and at home!
18.
The whole band must also be musically compatible, at (roughly) the same skill and experience level, with matching degrees of grooviness or rockiness or whatever is needed for that band.
I'm not sure I agree with this part, I've been in lots of bands with vastly different abilities over the years, some have worked out ok and some haven't but never really due to the skill levels.
19. Why is it presumed anyone in a covers band can only play covers?
