I've got one too
No one is asking you to, so no need to worry.
Phew
-
I'd hate to restrict myself to only listening to music with a technical and challenging bass line.
-
Ok that makes more sense to me now, having to do anything for me would certainly spoil the fun even if it was something I enjoy normally.
-
I meant having no debts and house paid. Why so pedantic ?
Because it's a huge difference to what he is saying, your income without gigging is similar to what you had when working so you can pick and choose or even not play ever again if you like, Blue has told us many times that he can't feed himself if he doesn't play almost every night for four hours, those situations to me are the opposite ends of the spectrum.
-
That's not similar to blue, his house might be paid for but as he says he MUST gig to survive, you don't.
-
My point only applies to those working in careers for other people. I'm comfortable and more than happy with my plight in life. BTW, my home was paid for years ago, and one of the reasons I can do this. Blue
"If I don't gig I don't eat" your words Blue.
First of all I'm not "most people" To be honest,I'm fine with it. Actually enjoying life like never before. To be honest, I'll take the fun of playing in a rock band for 4 hours over working 8 hours a day and making some other bloke rich. Cheers Blue
The point is that they're not working for anyone, they have their houses paid for, cash in the bank and decent pension, they can and do enjoy playing just like you but the ONLY difference is the don't HAVE to.
-
You don't even need to play the same bass line as on the original.
Agreed, see happy Jack's post
-
They are the same thing IMO.
The BOSS pedal that makes a fretless played finger style over the neck heel sound like Marcus Miller is going to be a huge hit
-
I should have clarified my statement. I did not mean better in terms of ability or skill. I meant that some that boast about not being in it for money come off as thinking they're slightly better idealogically. Blue
To be honest it's more a case of being in a better place financially from what I can see, most people no matter how much they love playing don't want to be in a position where they need a four hour gig most nights just to keep afloat in their mid 60's.
-
Would you give the same advice to the guitarist?
Would you want a drummer with seven drum kits too? Would you only do covers of female or male fronted bands to suit? Choir? Orchestra? The sign of a good song is one that can be alerted a lot and still be enjoyable.
-
not on Ace of Spades it's not, I've seen finger players trying to do it they don't even bother with fuzz, they shouldn't bother at all
You know what I'd still argue that the attack from a pick played with some gusto but no big muff would suit the track better than someone with a Ricky and some dirt but tickling it finger style.
-
I definitely play to the same standard paid or unpaid
-
I don't want to say it's all in the fingers but to be honest it's all it the fingers! I get a generic decent sound as best I can then alter my playing style to suit the song, up near the neck, side of the thumb, slap, fingers over the pickup, fingers near the bridge, plectrum, palm muting etc etc etc I just knock a bit of treble off when using a pick other than that I'm good to go. Some people say a Stingray is a one trick pony, I'd say those people have a limited technique
Or you could go way cheaper: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/musicman-sterling-sub-ray-5-string-bass-guitar-rosewood-trans-blue
That hasn't got the US Sterling dimensions or features though. They do/did an SB14 so essentially a Sterling by Sterling version! Afaik they never made a five string version.
-
I've never played in a band where the drummer plays for themselves only and I've played with a lot of drummers over the years, guitarists on the other hand......
-
I normally spend a couple of hours learning the more difficult songs for a gig if I'm a bit rusty then screw up the dead easy ones on the night, probably just as any fellow bass players walk in and right back out again! lol
When people say "less is more" what they are saying is that in a given circumstance the music is best served by a more sparse approach. Nobody would argue with the efficacy of that. But is less always more? Would The Who have made better music if John Entwhistle had adopted that ethos? Or Chris Squire with Yes? What about the Red Hot Chilli Peppers if Flea had been a shy retiring minimalist?
Flea leaves a lot more gaps than you'd think.
After reading thru this thread and having just joined a newly formed function band starting from scratch i thought i would take the most popular songs from here and put on one list. It made for a pretty fantastic set list. What do you think Maggie May – Rod Stewart Long Train Running – Doobies Sex On Fire – Kings of Leon Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry You Shook Me Al Night Long – AC/DC Honky Tonk Woman – The Stones Dancing with Myself – Billy Idol Sit Down – James Pinball Wizard – The Who Living Thing – ELO Jean Genie – Bowie Heroes – Bowie Get It On – T.Rex Blockbuster – Sweet Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams Dakota – Stereophonics Everybody Needs Somebody – The Blues Brothers Love Really Hurts – Billy Ocean Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting – Elton John Crocodile Rock – Elton John Sweet Home Alabama - Lynard Skynard Valerie – Amy Winehouse Alright Now – Free I Shot the Sheriff – Eric Clapton All My Loving – Beatles 39 – Queen Message In A Bottle – The Police Don’t Stop Believing - Journey
People can scoff all they like but any band that played that set to a half decent standard would go down a treat and be booked in for their next date as they were paid by the happy landlord/lady, bride or groom etc.

OK, this is a possibly weird question about gigging...
...or enthusiastic..? I did the lights and trucking for the band our eldest was in for several years; never got (nor asked for...) a penny. Whilst I was fit enough, I loved it; it took my mind well away from my IT work, and they were great lads. Happy daze..!
The odd weekend maybe but five our six nights a week for less than minimum wage as a full time job? I'm sticking with daft -
You mean someone that doesn't perform on stage, right? Yeah, it would be a huge struggle. I've never had much interest in running sound. I have enough trouble eqing my own rig. 😁 I don't have the apptitude for that stuff, sound or lights. cross over, sends, receive, house vs stage, subs, monitor mix, powered, not powered. It would be a disaster. Asking for payment would be awkward for me as well. I'd have to live with being exposed. However, I'm good at setting up and tear down. Manual labor had never been a problem for me. Blue
From the financial calculations people here have previously made these four hour gigs are already tight, that was before we knew there were more mouths to feed! On top of that if they are getting paid even less than the band members for at least six hours work they must be daft! -
Alternative to my Barefaced Super Twin?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Sammybass's topic in Amps and Cabs
You could try a Genz Benz Neox 2x12T, fairly light, 4 ohm, 600 watt and an adjustable tweeter. -
