1.
I'd love this as a part-trade for my Veillette 5 string, but I am sure that's a non-starter
Thanks for the offer Gareth. I'm not really looking for trades on this one.
2. Thanks for all your kind words. I'm still in 2 minds and am considering getting it refinished in Seafoam green or Sonic blue
3.
Do you have the ashtrays with this?
I'm afraid not. They're pretty easy to source though
4.
Ah bugger, that's me out then.
Sorry Tom Better pictures now added
5. I have somehow managed to end up with 2 of these, so have decided to sell one on. It's a Fender Japan 51 P Bass (2003) I think, in Butterscotch. Overall condition is excellent, with a couple of small dings near the bridge (not through to the paint) and a chip on the lower edge of the rear (pictured). It's actually a decent weight too. These can be quite heavy, but I would guess this one at being a bit less than 9lbs. I'm looking for £450 for this. I can ship in an old case but would rather a pick up or meet. PS Feet are not included in the sale.
6.
Nick. Have you ever played a BF Compact? Im torn between wanting this as i know exactly what to expect, and a Compact as its got some fantastic write ups.
HI Dave I borrowed a Compact for a while. As good as it was, I found the construction seemed less robust to me and I actually found it quite trebly. It could just have been me of course PM me if you want more details
7.
Think the markets slow at the minute Nick. If I could get a trade on a decent CS P bass then I'd probably rejoin the Fender owners club.
Hmmm, i know what you mean. All roads for me lead back to Fender eventually!
8. For trade is a mint condition Series 2 Epifani UL115 cab in superb condition apart from a few scuffs on the plastic corner protectors (pictured). Its only a few months old and has had a very easy life so far! Its easily the best 15" cab I've ever used but I've just bought a Markbass stack! Yours for £345 or £360 delivered insured to UK mainland but I would also consider trades for an already set up Pedalboard with an Envelope Filter and Phaser or an EUB. Here are the specs. It's an 8 ohm cab and is wonderfully light! 9.
Ah Clarky, you know me too well, that's exactly the combination I'd first thought of! I have to admit that Oly White with a tort guard on a J is a really nice combo as well (and it has the original tort guard already).
I agree with Clarky Barrie Thats a wonderful collection of P basses you have there. I remember when i used to pop round and see your awesome collection of 5 Strings and always felt my P bass was a bit out ofnplace. Not anymore
10.
Looks like a great gigging bass Nick. I have a bass with PJ config with a flick switch like this and it works brilliantly. I use the P only for some songs and both pickups for others. It also has the twin volume controls for balancing levels but doesn't have individual tone per pickup. If this had a narrower nut I'd be seriously tempted as a backup to my number 1
Thanks Barrie. I have to say that this is the only PJ ive played where the output from both pickups is virtually identical in volume. It makes it a lot easier rather than having to worry about changing volume etc when switching pickups! The neck feels like a cross between a P and J to me, so very comfortable. I owe you enough favours as it is so youre more than welcome to try it out How's the injury by the way? Bump by the way
11. I got this a while back in a trade and have finally got round to having it rewired and set up. It's a 2006 Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub that has been stripped and professionally refinished in natural by Martin Sims of Sims Custom. At the same time, a matching Lindy Fralin Jazz pickup was installed at the bridge at it was originally wired V/V/T. I have recently had it wired with 2 Concentric pots for each pickup to increase the versatility and decided at the same time to have a 3 way switch installed (neck pickup selector, both pickups and bridge pickup selector) to give yet more variations in sounds. I very rarely use a P and J pickup together at the same time and wanted a way to easily change between the 2 without having to fiddle about with knobs so I asked Trevor of Ripley guitars to fit a switch for me. He's done a superb job. The finish an condition of the bass is superb and it has also been fitted with a custom made Jeannies Pickguard in cream pearloid. It's also strung with a set of La Bella Deep Talkin flats and plays superbly. It weighs approx 8lbs 10. Now sold
12. Ive been lucky enough to see this bass in the flesh and it's even more gorgeous than the pics show. Chris is a great guy to deal with too. Bump!
13. Nice one (or two) mate. Where does that leave your old Zeller?
14. Thanks Mart. Any joy in deciding what to do with your Ray?
15. Mart, Jon Shuker wired up a passive mod on my old Stingray. When you pulled the treble pot out, it switched the bass to passive mode and the treble pot worked as a passive tone pot. It was a great mod and made the bass sound very P like. It might be an idea to try something similar if you want a more organic sound. The other thing too was that it was completely reversible so if you wanted to put it back to stock it was relatively straightforward.
16.
Nicely recounted Nick, I really enjoyed reading that. I'm just sitting here chilling and you've got me thinking about grand parents and parents. My wife and I have lost all of ours in recent times. My mum being the only survivor now and even though we speak everyday and get together frequently, I know she feels lonely and very aware of her own mortality. Sorry going on a bit there. It's a good thing I don't drink or smoke these days, think I would be at risk of getting a bit maudlin Love the bass by the way
No worries Gary. I have days when the past catches up with me too and a I guess yesterday wa sone of those days for recounting happy times THe funny thing about my Pop was that he was very unmusical an I guess at the time when we were running around looking for a Black US P Bass he must have thought I was nuts!
17. Thanks for all your comments guys Not sure about a Jazz Michael. Tried a few and still not sure. I see from your Sig that you've got one though! Spill the beans
18. Inspired by Matt Citizenbass and Gafbass and their threads on how their trusty Jazz basses have developed, I thought I'd do the same with my old P Bass. The body is from a 1987 Fender US P Bass that my Grandfather and I hunted down to Don MacKrill's music shop in Edgware. I'd just done my GCSE's so my parents gave me a bit of money. I had to trade in my Fender Telecaster for it and was still a bit short but my Grandfather helped me out a bit (thanks Pop ). Over the years, the neck decided that t wasn't made of wood but was in fact a Banana. Despite many many operations and trips to the menders it finally became unplayable in 2009. Anyway, the opportunity arose in the same year to buy a fantastically priced new series US Fender which I duly did, again with some money from my Grandparents for Christmas. Sadly, shortly afterwards my Grandfather passed away, so it felt only right (in my mind) to combine parts of both Basses to make a Super-bass; my Fender P(op) Bass. The neck and bridge are from the newer bass. The body, pickups and electrics are from the old bass. The pickguard is from a 62 Reissue P Bass that I put on years ago. Last year I had LED's fitted to the side of the neck to help me see what I'm playing when I'm singing and there's an additional hole in the pickguard where I briefly fitted a P-Retro (not for me I'm afraid). I know every knock and bang on it and if I ever lost it I would be devestated. That said it doesn't stopping me using her every time I gig and together we've played Weddings, a Funeral, parties, tours to Ireland and Jersey (another story), Rugby Clubs, Social Clubs and lots of those horrid sticky-floored "Builders on Coke" Pubs we all love so much. She weighs just over 8lbs and is and always will be my number 1 bass despite being a bit of a Trigger's Broom!
19. This is gorgeous i wish I had the talent to do this sort of thing
20. 2 gigs this week. Both arranged a long time ago and ones that we had fully committed to otherwise I could well have done without them! Unfortunately due to the requirements of work I have spent my life recently travelling up and down the Motorways, so time for home life (and sleeping) is currently at a premium. Wednesday night was near Alton and was a very good gig. Apart from the Drummer that is, who kept missing beats, dropping sticks etc. He's just back from holiday and sounded like it! One of the new tracks (beautiful Day by U2) went down a storm. It's certainly not the most difficult of basslines but when the bass comes in full-pelt in the chorus, Boy does it make people sit up The gig last night in Staines was with another band I occasionally help out and wasn't the best of evenings. I thought we sounded very loose and sloppy which ruined the night for me. Feedback from the audience was completely the opposite though and they've been re-booked for a few nights in the future. It was nice to play through a 15" cab again and good to feel my Jeans flapping around my ankles!
21. Why not change the hardware on your ESP Michael? You're half way there with the bass colour etc.
22.
Tempted by this, any way it can approach Bristol?
I'm sure it can travel a fair way down towards Bristol
