In 1987, I got roped in to joining my first "proper" band at the age of 14 and was the youngest member by at least 10 years. I was totally hooked after my first gig but it must have been touch and go for the other band members whether they kept me on or not! I had previously been playing guitar and got to know the owner of a guitar shop opposite my school as I used to spend most of my free periods and lunchtimes with him jamming through the amps in his shop. He was also lead guitarist with a popular (well, in Watford and St Albans anyway) band called The Sea. One day while I was there he told me their Bass player had left the band and they were looking for a replacement; would I be interested?? I said yes without giving it any thought whatsoever and we immediately swapped my Fender Tele and amp for a white Japanese Fender Jazz with a dodgy "made in the USA" transfer on the headstock that he had on his shop wall. We rehearsed that night and it was root notes all the way (at the time I was heavily influenced by Adam Clayton and Simon Gallup from The Cure). It fitted in with their requirements, I was offered the job and then told the next gig was in 3 days time! The most difficult part was persuading my parents that it was a good thing for their 14 year old son to be a member of a pub rock band and that hanging out with men in leather jackets, earrings and long hair was perfectly normal. My Dad was fine with it as he'd always liked his live music. My Mum was more difficult to convince. We agreed to a compromise in that my Dad would come along to the gig with me and ensure I was safe and not drinking too much etc. Being the archetypal teenager ("so unfair") I reluctantly agreed as long as he didn't speak to me or even stand anywhere near me. Gig day arrived, we all met at the Pub in St Albans and the landlord graciously agreed to serve the 100 or so under-agers who'd turned up to witness my first performance. I would like to tell you I rocked, I'd also like to say that I was rubbish but neither is true. In all honesty I can't remember. What I DO remember is that my fretting fingers would only move at 50% of their usual speed during the first song and that my plucking fingers kept getting caught under the strings. The second song was marginally better and by the third song I was absolutely fine (still playing roots though). After the first set I mingled with my friends and felt like a God! The second set I decided I would play bass and smoke a la Slash, so I strapped my bass on, put a ciggy on my bottom lip and promptly removed it again after seeing my Dad pull his face and start shaking his head. All in all we went down really well. I received a lot of good hearted rather than musically appreciative compliments, but the band obviously thought I'd get better and let's face it anyone who can draw a decent crowd to any gig has a place in the band Incidentally our current rhythm guitarist is the biggest draw I have ever seen and 100% deserves his place in our line-up! Best part of the night other than the playing of course was my Dad admitting that he'd had a few drinks and wasn't in a fit state to drive home so my Mum had to come and pick us up!

BUMP for you EBS fans

I've got the chance to buy an EBS Neoline 212 and wonder if anyone hasany experience of these cabs. I've never use EBS cabs before and would appreciate any info on them and how they compare to Epifanis or Aguilars and if they have any unique attributes (mid scoop, coloured sound etc).

Great choice. I really miss my 2008 US P bass I'm sure you'll get many hours of joy out of her.

Played a private party last night in hall near St Albans. The bar staff who were hired also run a couple of local pubs so we have some bookings for next year. We went down really well and I had a chance to to play my new acquisitions (the 78 P Bass and the SG Bass). Both were great to play and I really enjoyed playing the Who and Cream numbers in our set on the SG. I DEFINITELY need to sort the neck dive out or at least remember to hold on to the neck all the way through the set. There were a couple of scary moments when the headstock moved southwards at an alarming rate of knots. Even better for me personally was the lack of (or limited) pain I felt in my left forearm after 2 hours playing. Still not right by a long shot but I was comfortable enough to try my Jack Bruce licks

It was showing as "in stock" on their website but absolutely no sign of it yet as apparently they're still waiting on a delivery of SD gear. I wouldn't mind so much if I hadn't taken out the original pickup already. Easy enough to re-fit but a pain in the backside

It wasn't an easy decision, but I really didn't want it sat round gathering dust as an expensive piece of furniture. Well after promising myself that I wasn't going to change any of my Gear in 2009 I find myself with a whole different set up than I started with at the beginning of the year... The good news for my wallet at least is that financially I've actually been able to put some money by from all my shenanigans as most of my acquisitons have either been from selling gear and buying cheaper or straight swaps. In my tiny twisted little mind, this makes up for breaking my resolution to not keep constantly changing my setup Anyway, this is what I've ended up with. The 51 Reissue was bought from GAK (as advertised on this forum) for a fantastic price. It's currently out of service as I've just replaced the bridge and am awaiting a replacement Seymour Duncan Quarterpounder which is due imminently. It's a 1996 model and is absolutely spotless. It is also VERY yellow. More fluorescent yellow than butterscotch and I'm sure it glows in the dark. Nonetheless it's a lot for bass for the money. Next up is a Gibson SG Reissue bass in Canary Yellow and dates from 2006. This was through a trade with Jsixties (Javier) on this forum and came all the way from Spain in less than 5 days. Again it's spotless and incredibly easy to play. I'm not a fan of the 3 point bridge and will replace this with a Hipshot soon. It sounds great and really adds some authenticity to some of the 60's and 70's numbers we do. Lastly is a 78 Precision Bass that I traded with OBBM (Dave) for my Shuker 5 String P bass. I'm very pleased my Shuker went to Dave and I can honestly say I can't think of anyone I would rather have ended up with it. Dave described it as being in "tip top" condition but as usual he was being modest. For a 30 year old instrument it's absolutely mint with no wear other than on the pickguard. It even came with the original hang tags, paperwork and receipt. The wood used is beautiful on both the body, neck and headstock and again it sounds wonderful. The neck is a factory fitted Jazz profile neck (custom ordered when the bass was made) and it is the easiest P Bass I've ever played. People talk about late 70's Fenders being either hit or miss. This definitely falls in to the Hit category. It's a bit heavy but after years and years of playing as a Front Row Forward it doesn't bother me much So, these are the 3 basses I intend to see 2009 out with. The P basses are definitely keepers, but I would like to think I will still have all 3 at the end of 2010 (no promises though!)

Yep, definitely a Lakland man! I've just taken part in a trade with Javier which has seen me take delivery of a mint condition CANARY YELLOW Gibson SG Reissue Bass. It is exactly as described and Javer couldn't have done more to keep me updated as to the location of the bass during transit. Definitely a good guy to deasl with and highly recommended. Next time you're in the UK Javier, PM me and we can share a beer or 2. Thanks again for a faultless trade.

I picke dht edog up from Matlock Bath one Sunday. There's all the bikers lethered up strutting down the road with me in the middle carrying a spring-loaded metal dog They'd tell you otherwise but I think they were scared.
