Are you open to trades?

I love that Warwick 5er Luke- wow! That's a really good selection of basses. Good choice on the amp front too. I nearly went for one of these but went for the Schroeder 21012L instead as I found I could hear it better when standing in front of it.
It's the stuff you can't quite put your finger on that makes them, not the physical things themselves. Japanese models, no matter how good quality wise will never have it. They will always be Japanese. You can get a custom shop issue that feels and sounds like a 70s Fender and will be of much better physical quality but it still won't have it. It's a heart thing not a head thing and that's what makes them great.
AMEN- Well said Sir

Same as anything else Peter- good and bad. I guess you need to try before you buy. I'm a fully paid-up Fender Head (I've even got the T-Shirt). So far, I've been lucky with the 70's Fenders I've bought but have come across a few Pups too. Like anything that's 30-odd years old I guess the strong survive and like to think that most of the dogs have fallen by the wayside. Personally I don't really go for Fenders that look like they've had a hard life; I like something as pristine as I can get it- I do like the 70's basses in preference to the more modern Fenders as (to me) they feel a bit more individual. That said, I've owned a number of modern Fenders and have been delighted with them.
The pickguard is worth about £80. White's not that rare either, but it looks in great shape. Ebay.com is your best bet with something like that, but you're likely to be stung as the dollar is so low. I might have the Precision shiny bits, I'll PM in a day or so. I'll see if a friend might want the jazz pickguard as well.
Thanks for the appraisal of the pickguard. I thought white was quite rare for the 70's but that's only going on my limited knowledge. I'll give Ebay a bash and see how I get on. Cheers

Just checked the diary and in the first half of the year we did 23. The second half (with the old band disbanding and me joining a new band) we did a further 12. Significantly down on last year, but not a bad number!

Does anyone name their guitars.

My Black Stingray is called Holly after my Black Lab and the Shuker 5 string is going to be called Alice after my wife. No names for the Precisions yet!! -
That's a good looking bass OHM (altho' I prefer black/black/maple like your lakky). Did you fit the bridge cover or was it already installed?
Hi Steve.THanks for your kind words. THe Bridge cover was installed on both of the basses when I got them. I removed the pickup covers though as it didn't leave me any room to play!!

Ian bought my Lakland DJ5 last weekend and in true Bass Chat tradition, it involved meeting at a Service Station!! Ian's a top guy (great communications all the way though the deal) and we spent a bit of time swapping experiences etc. I'm sure if we'd had time (and a bar) we'd probably have made a day of it. Anyway, thanks Ian- highly recommended.
me and you are going to fall out.......
I'm saving them for you John! The Rickenbacker was with me for about a week but as I suspected, I just couldn't really get on with it. It's now with Greeneking and is part of his amazing Rickenbacker collection. The Markbass head with the Precision is (to my cauliflowered ears) amazing. I tend to play it with the EQ relatively flat and use the vintage tone knob on the head to colour the sound. I'd highly recommend trying one out at weighing in at only 7 lbs or so, it's a breeze to transport. As much as I like the look of a P Bass with a maple neck, I prefer the feel of the rosewood board. If the maple had the same finis on it as (say) the Lakky or the Stingray, then I'd definitely buy one. Funnily enough, I was out with some mates yesterday and popped in to Macari's. They had a 78 Mocha Brown P Bass (exactly the same as mine) in excellent condition with a maple board. It cost £1,899 though Even more startling was the Bass shop (Bass Place?) down Denmark Street. In the shop window, they had a MINT 1972 Jazz Bass in natural AND a MINT 72 Precision in Sunburst with a maple board- both were £2,500. I've never considered smash and grab before, but I came very close...

Lovely bass- you must be pacing waiting for it!!

This was too good an opportunity to pass up on... Here is a 1974 Fender Precision I've just managed to get hold of. Overall condition is excellent, but the finish is starting to crack in places (see the lines in the paintwork in one of the close ups). They look like crazing in the laquer to me (a very common problem especially on black Fneders apparently), but other than that, there's no buckle rash at all and the bass is as solid as they day it was made (a few dings on some of the edges but I guess that's to be expected). The frets and most of the metalwork is a bit tarnished, but again in great condition. I'm sure it will clean up well with a bit of elbow grease. The neck is straight and the fingerboard is really comfortable. The pickup is fantastic and sounds classic P Bass. Unfortunately, the pickup in my 1975 Mocha died, so I replaced it with a SD Quarterpounder. The Bob Glaub has a Lindy Fralin in it, so the 3 basses sound very different from each other. It came with the original case which again is in excellent condition. The person I bought it off was the original owner who said basically it had been kept under a bed for the last 20 years!! In addition to these 3, I've got 2 Stingrays and am waiting on a 5 string Precision from Jon Shuker which is some 5 months away. I'll probably move one of the Stingrays on, but other than that, I'm really happy with my collection now. It covers all the sounds I need and because the basses are so similar in shape and feel, swapping between them is a breeze. Over 20 years of playing, countless basses (some good some bad) and I dread to think of how much money I've p*ssed away over the years. Where have I ended up? Right at the beginning again; a 1 volume 1 tone P Bass. My Mother would be so proud...
There's no ACG in that list, a glaring error in my opinion I don't know when Ric last put there prices up and by how much but it seems to me that they are now pretty much on a par with US Laklands. I know that Ric's are not everyone's 'cuppa' but imo they're well made with several fairly unique design aspects that must make them more expensive to build. I don't think that saying 'you hope they go under' will serve anyone's purpose. If their market dries up, which I doubt, they'll have to either adjust their prices downwards or if they can't do that redesign a cheaper product/outsource manufacture abroad.
It's actually a retrospective increase Peter.....ahem

Mr Lakland himself Dan Lakin- personally answered emails and genuinely seems the nicest man in the world -
Nah, it was at a ball in one of the Colleges in Cambridge. Why do you ask?
It's just that everyone I've known he's played with or shared a gig with Geno has been at the Road House!! I think he had a residency there for a few years.
I've played on stage after Geno Washington and the Ram Jam band did a set. What was particularly nice was that Geno stuck around to listen to us, then came over to say hello after we'd finished. Nice chap.
Just out of interest, was that at the Roadhouse in Covent Garden?
Hiya Nick It's a peculiar story of Northwestern bass folk. I aquired the Bongo from Alan (Homer) and he aquired my Sterling from me, not at the same time though. Last week they changed places.
So the rumour's true then; there are only 200 basses in the whole of the UK. They just get swapped regularly between Bass Chatters!!
-
Stunning Peter and glad to hear you're still over the moon with the Chris Squire. Have you moved the Bongo 5 on now? PS the Bob Glaub looks great. Makes me think I'll keep mine for a while yet!!
