Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2023?
Old Horse Murphy replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
This Vintera Telebass is, for me, probably my best purchase over the last three years. Incredible thing.- 214 replies

Do you think anyone's got the guts to gig like this?
Old Horse Murphy replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
It would certainly save dinging the bottom of my bass on the cymbals every time I moved. I like it! -
Leaked: Fender Vintera II series...hoooo boy.

I love mine. None of my other basses have had a look in over the last two months for recording and gigging. It's really that good. -
Anyone else find Electronic Drums weird?
Old Horse Murphy replied to Lfalex v1.1's topic in General Discussion
I don't enjoy playing with electronic drums and had a bad experience where my monitor wasn't working and on a very large stage I had very little to go on other than watching the drummer's kick pedal and various arms flailing. It was like watching someone trying to shoo away a wasp from a table in a beer garden. They always sound not particularly good to me either and weirdly can be very bassy and trebly at the same time. -
They actually moved because the building they were in was condemned due to concrete degradation. The new store is fine (parking round the back if needed) but it doesn't have all the nooks and crannies of the old store which I really liked. Joe (the bass specialist) left a short while ago but it's still a nice enough store to have a browse.

And the best bass sound I've ever had is..... (drum roll)
Old Horse Murphy replied to la bam's topic in General Discussion
Mine was a Lakland Duck Dunn straight in to the studio desk. It did everything from gnarly to treacle. Shame it was so heavy. The best live recorded sound I've had was a tatty 90's Fender US Jazz bass with Wizard 84's. Out of all the stuff I've heard where we've recorded gigs this is still the benchmark. -
They won't be, but you'll just need them to price it up for you and they'll compare it with other online prices to give you the most competitive offer.

I spoke to the guys in PMT Bristol about this and their tactic seems to be about the "Big Reveal", in that you get the price checked there and then and they'll generally match the best price they find it being sold for online. It may work for some but I'd rather the price on the instrument reflected the price online but I get why they do it. I wonder though, how many potential customers see the price tag and walk away before speaking to anyone.

Nice one Hutton. One of my favourite colour schemes 👍

This is a reluctant sale and one I'm really not sure about, but having moved away from short scale basses I thought I'd test the market. For sale is a Sandberg California II VM4 P Bass in hardcore aged shell pink. It comes with factory fitted dot inlays and an upgraded black label pickup (both optional extras). The body is alder and it has a gorgeous dark rosewood fingerboard that is a pleasure to play. The Sandberg gigbag, Allen keys and paperwork is also included. It's a 30" scale. I'm not a huge fan of the Sandberg P bass pickups as I find them very mid-light, so I swapped it out for an EMG Geezer Butler passive pickup and it sounds ace. The original wiring loom and pickup is also included and apart from having to cut a few wires to replace the pickup, no other modifications were required. This has been a dream to play and it has been gigged regularly but always well looked after. It weighs in at 7lbs 4oz. I paid £2,199 for this and while I was having back issues it really got me through some tough times. I'm looking for £1,600 picked up from near Monmouth or within an hour or so's drive but I'm also happy to post fully insured. I'm not looking for any trades thanks.

Bassface to space face (i.e. empty..kinda)

I generally look bored and grumpy, but really I'm trying to count and remember what comes next.
