Funnily enough, the older I've got the more I've realised there's a place in this world for Flats and Rounds. When I was younger I had all my basses strung with Flatwounds (mostly TI's which are still my Flatwounds string of choice). As time went on though I decided to string one of my basses with Ernie Ball Extra Slinky Roundwounds (40-95's) as I was missing a bit of zing in a few songs. It was a revelatory experience and now I have seven of my nine basses string with Rounds as (to me) they just suit the bass better and work with their dynamics more than the TI's do. IMHO having a P Bass with Flats and another with Rounds is about all you'll need to get by.

Personally I'd ask on here. Granted you're likely to get a million different opinions and a huge price range, but the upside is you can choose whichever price you like the best 👍🙂

I agree re pickguard-less Jazz Basses, especially when they still have the bell plate added, so having a pickguard doesn't bother me at all.

I've only played it for a short while but it actually sounds quite bassy to me. I'll take it to rehearsal on Monday to try it at a bit higher volume but it certainly didn't sound thin. I don't mind the sound of Jazzes on their own, it's as part of the overall mix that I find it's a bit lacking to my ears. It will be interesting to see how I fare with it.

So I'm the end I kept this one and let my natural Stingray 5 Special go. I loved them both, so was happy to keep either one.

It's even better in the flesh and is quite difficult to photograph. It's basically a reverse sunburst and is more of a lighter blue to a darker blue colour. The neck is gorgeous and the rosewood is a lovely dark colour. It's a lovely bass and is as good as any Jazz I've played and the build quality is superb. I'm still not a massive Jazz bass fan though and expecting it to be anything other than a Jazz bass would be unfair. I'll persevere a bit longer I think but I'm not sure it's a keeper.

So I took this today as part for a deal from one of my favourite independent guitar shops for my Thunderbird, Geddy Lee Jazz and some guitar bits I moved on. It's a new 2021 American Pro ii Jazz Bass in Dark Night but as it has a rosewood fingerboard rather than the standard maple board, it's a limited edition run. I much prefer rosewood boards on Jazz basses, so it suits me just fine. It's a lovely weight (8lbs 14oz) and plays really well. I'm not really a Jazz Bass fan as the ergonomics don't work for me but it was a compelling deal. I won't unwrap it as such as I may well move it on imminently. It's a very striking colour scheme and the built quality is excellent as it has been on the other American Pro II's I've seen.

So having been let down by DPD picking tue bass up on Tuesday I decided to take a look at the Kiloton to see if I could work out what on earth was going on and whether it was a quick fix. Turns out it was a very poorly cut nut, which in a new bass that cost a lot is frankly unacceptable. Anyway, a bit of superglue/baking soda mix and all is well. The retailer was kind enough to pay for the cost of a new nut and all is well. It plays beautifully but I'm annoyed that a US G&L shouldn't be anything other than perfect. On that subject, compared to my recently purchased SB-1, there's a marked difference in feeling of overall quality and this one came with polishing powder marks on the fingerboard (soon resolved) and but the overall finish of the chrome definitely feels diminished. Not sure if it's just a one-off or whether G&L is experiencing production issues. All that said, it's still a fine bass but disappointing nonetheless.
