three wonderful G&Ls. Enjoy them! 🙂

Owning both of them, in time I’d be interested to hear what you think of the day to day, real world differences between the LB-100 and the SB-1.  (I owned a tribute LB100 and never played an SB-1)

Thanks :)  I've got a rehearsal next week and intend to take them both along. They're both currently strung with TI's although I keep thinking about putting nickel roundwounds on the SB-1. That said, it plays so well with the Flats.

I can foresee the LB-100 replacing my old favourite P Bass as my main gigging P Bass, as my old one (although not worth much financially) is of a great deal of sentimental value to me. I'm very choosy about when and where I play it and although it's a pleasure to play, it allows me to be a bit more discerning.

@neepheidis absolutely right in that the LB-100 certainly hasn't fallen far from the P Bass tree at all (in fact it hit every branch on the way down) and for a new(ish) bass it feels worn in and very familiar indeed.

  2. So I made a schoolboy error last night and decided against my better judgement to have a go on the LB-100 again and set the action closer to what I generally play with....what a revelation.

Yes, it is just a P Bass and it always will be but it's a fabulous one at that! I bunged a set of TI's on it and it's a revelation. It also looks great too.

    Anyway, it's staying.

  3. Off topic I know but as much as I rate him as a player I can't bear to watch Joe Dart playing because of that head/neck thing. It's very petty but it really gets to me and actually makes me feel quite queasy.

Don't get me started in David Gray's side to side head shake...

BTW the new bass looks great to me.

  4. My gig where I needed a good 5'er has fallen through, so the luxury of having two lovely Stingrays is just that; a luxury.

For sale is a gorgeous December 2019 Stingray 5 Special in Charging Green with both a white and black pickguard (currently sporting the black one). It comes with the original case and all the candy. It weighs in at 8lbs 7oz and has a stunning roasted maple neck and fingerboard. It plays beautifully and looks stunning.

Condition is superb apart from a tiny ding on the headstock near the B Tuning peg. It's just been restrung with a new set of Ernie Ball Nickels 45-130's.

It really is one of the best SR5's I've owned and if there wasn't a bit more tied up sentimentally in my other SR5 I'd keep this one in a heartbeat.

I'm looking for a straight sale at £1,500 and will post for cost. No trades please.

    More pics to follow.

Well it is basically a P bass. What did you expect or hope for from an LB-100 above and beyond a P bass?

Fair point but I've owned P Basses from Lakland before for example that have felt different to a Fender P Bass and had a different sound. I thought the G&L would be slightly more genetically removed but it wasn't. It was great though, but not different enough for my justification. You live and learn.

  6. So the LB-100 arrived today and as stunning as it is, it really doesn't give me anything that my Fender P Basses don't already cover. As a result I'm going to keep the SB-1 which is amazing as is my CLF L-2000 :)

  7. I'm always minded to think of the following quote by Lemmy:

"If you're going to be a f*****g rock star go be one. People don't want to see the guy next door on stage; they want to see a being from another planet. You want to see somebody you'd never meet in ordinary life."

While anyone who's ever met me will confirm I don't scream of "rockstar" I do try and make a bit of an effort rather than looking like I'm just nipping in to town to buy some baked potatoes.

  8. After completely falling in love with my G&L CLF L-2000 I decided I'd like to try a few different styles and having sold a few basses recently, I wanted to try G&L's P Basses.

After speaking to a few dealers I was able to secure a SB-1 and a LB-100 on approval. The SB-1 arrived earlier today.

First impressions are, well, wow. Build quality is brilliant as expected, it weighs just over 8 and a half pounds and the Pickup is some thing else and it easily overpowers my Stingray 5. That said, it's very versatile and still retains that warm P Bass sound, just more of it.

I was interested to see the body shape of the SB basses in person as they looked a bit incongruous to me, so a chance to compare one to my P basses was useful. You can definitely tell they're related and the difference is subtle (a bit like the Lakland DJ4 vs. Jazz Bass shape). It certainly looks right to me, if a little different. I don't even mind the headstock design too much!

Playability is excellent and the whole bass is really top notch. From what I understand, the LB-100 is more of the traditional P Bass but I look forward to trying it when it arrives (hopefully) Wednesday. If it's anything like the SB-1 in terms of playability and build quality I may well be selling something else shortly!

  9. Well I've not had this long but I'm trying to rationalise my basses and as much as I love this, it's not going to get played much at all.

It's a 2015 Thunderbird with case and all the paperwork, truss rod tool etc. The bass is in super condition overall but the case has a few grazes in the tolex. It's a lovely light weight (according to our digital kitchen scales it's 8lb 8oz) and the features on the 2015 model (factory added coil taps and other features such as a thicker rosewood fingerboard, Babicz bridge and Pearl inlays) were a real step up. A lot of Thunderbird players rate this year particularly highly.

I'll put some more pics up shortly but hopefully these will whet your appetite in the meantime.

I'm looking for £1,200 and would like this picked up but am happy to meet within an hour of Monmouth. If I can find a big enough box I'd post as a last resort.

  10. My P Bass that was bought with money from my family after my GCSE's. I got it secondhand but it was only a few years old.

Over the years it's had a new neck, new bridge, new pickguard and has been fitted with Sims LED's. I've also badly touched up some paint chips (done years ago before I appreciated Mojo). It's probably not worth anything to anyone other than me but is the only instrument I can 100% say I would never sell.

  11. I completely agree with the (for me) uninspiring preponderance of lined Jazz/Jaco clones, so decided to go down a different route and make my own.

The unlined rosewood neck is from a Fender Japan Jazz, EMG pickups and loom and a custom made P Bass body. I think all in it probably cost me £600, which was IMO a good deal compared to what is available in the market that gives me something somewhere close to what I wanted.
