Hi guys, Here's a link to a Blog Post I did with a Moroccan Inspired bass composition and a quick lesson on Gnaoua Rhythms - The Music Of Morocco - and applying them to the bass. They use a swing on the castanets that's really , interesting, unique and challenging for western musicians... Hi F, Usually the chords are just my best guess. The main thing I usually aim to find is what 4-part chord the player is thinking. If you can sing the chord type in your head or out loud and it 'fits' you should be right. I've always played piano as well as bass which helps. Obviously in some music there are more complex chords on top, but from what i've learned from many good gtr and keys players is that it's usually the basic 4part chord they are focused on first before worrying about anything else like 9ths 11ths etc. Gary Willis' book on ear-training is a good starting point for recognising chords by ear too - worth a look if you haven't already. cheers, Johnny
Nice work, dude.. I've spotted that your work out the harmony within the tune.. Just curious, how did you get it going, I mean, working it out - I suppose, you use piano to determine chords? Why I am asking is that I have no problem transcribing separate parts, but harmony behind notes is sometimes a bit of a mistery to me..
Cheers dude, Ever since I switched to bass from guitar, I've been addicted to trying to play more in time. lol! Guys like Marcus, Pino and Anthony Jackson to me have such an unbelievable feel. Those 5 tips are some of the best things I've found along the way to try and get closer to these guys feel which is so hard to cop. I think it's easy to get up to 95% there with hard work and a lot of players do, but closing the gap to the remaining 5% is like the life long mission if you ask me!! ;-) peace, J
I've been looking for exercises for all Areas of bass as I only snatch half an hour here and there at the moment. The article has an encouragingly relaxed tone and you describe the aim of each exercise precisely without being long winded. Thank-you for a great post ,this will help me become more satisfied with my bass playing ability.
Hi guys, here's another wee transcription. This time it's a look at the african 12/8 grooving on "proof" from the 1991 Paul Simon Live in Central Park concert. It's a little insight into a part of what's a great overall gig full of some world class bass. http://www.johnnycopland.com/?p=783 cheers and keep on groovin, Johnny

cheers Kophyn, Yes - it should be 8th notes. Which means that you have to play one note on the click and note right in the middle of the 1/4 click at a low speed, and judging where that is, is where the improvement comes. I made a mistake with the notation and wrote 1/4 notes! thanks for letting me know J
Good stuff. A question though - For the first exercise, the little bit of notation at the end of the paragraph says to play quarter notes, but you seem to play it in eighth notes. Which one are you meant to play?
Like this A Nitti one! Cheers for the heads up woodster. J
Great article.... Timing is so often down the list of skills that bass players feel they need. I use this one, from Adam Nitti, with my students.....
Hi guys, I've done a video and article on my Top 5 Timing Exercises on my site. http://www.johnnycopland.com/?p=671 They're inspired by various ones i've picked up over the years from Carol Kaye, Victor Wooten, others or adapted myself etc... Would be interested to hear of any other ones that pros or students have used to good effect. peace, Johnny
