1.
Yeh, well, it's yer maple board, innit? Can't go wrong wiv a maple board, mate.
+1. And perfect with the sunburst Had a go on a P-Bass last week and now have serious GAS. Played like butter I think the saying goes.

The EHX pedals also have adaptor cables for a Diago power station. A few scratches on the face of the EHX pedals but they function perfectly. Looking for £35 each incl. P&P Here is a photo: Will accept £25 for Bass Compactor
3. Thanks for the comments guys.
4. I am looking to sell my Yamaha BB1100s, bought new in 1987. It was gigged regularly over the next few years and underwent the following modifications in the late eighties/early nineties: - brass/bone nut - OBL pickups - Schaller bridge - Hipshot D-tuner - Pickup selector replaced with pan switch After buying a Kubicki bass in 1992, I had the frets taken out of this one, realised I couldn't play fretless and put it in the loft. Fast forward to the present day. It has now had a new maple fretboard and a general spruce up. It has a few dings – mainly on the base of the body and the end of the headstock – but still looks and sounds great. I am looking for £350 (was £400), which will cover the cost of the latest mods! This includes a hard case covered in lots of stickers from the 80's. No trades – sorry. Here are some photos:
5. Great pictures. Didn't realise that the early P's had the strings through body feature.
6. The bassline still sounds like Jaco - Even on a keyboard!
7. I would suggest speaking to the drummer and asking him how he thinks that it's going. Interesting how you get used to someone over time, though. A drummer who I have played in several bands with depped with my current band the other week. The rest of the band commented that he tended to slow down - I've never noticed!! S**t - does that make me a fraud too?
8. For me, the old style pickguard only looks 'right' with the pickup cover on. Shame they didn't do that for this bass.
9. My Jazz has a J-Retro, a Badass bridge and a D-tuner. That's about £400 worth. I also can't speak highly enough of the J-Retro - AND I didn't ask for the discount!
10.
there are more costly hobbies.
+1 Being in a band is my golf. I wonder what my handicap would be...
11.
Get one of everything that's the best bet IMO
The Holy trinity? I quite like that idea.
12. I would keep my right thumb on the low B, and keep everything simple.
13.
certainly wouldn't wack a J-Retro in a 73 .. sacrilege!
I must admit that I don't really understand this argument. Like many, I would love a vintage Fender. However, I would then be happy to make some non-intrusive mods so it plays and sounds as good as it can be - and then go out and enjoy playing it! I think that collectors can get a bit anal about the value of instruments as an investment - I mean, even a pre-cbs would not give you enough to retire on would it?
14.
buy and fit a John East J-Retro 01 preamp.
+1. I can't tell you what a massive difference this has made to my sound (and playing) in just a few short weeks.
15. I bet Mustang Sally sounds the business on that bass.
16. I have always thought that most music shops would benefit from being firebombed! However, it is always a pleasure dealing with the Bass Merchant. Nothing is too much trouble.
17. I would choose John Paul Jones Would have said Tal or Esparanza but it appears that I am a little too far down the queue...
18. Really short here too, but probably leaving about 1mm of white on the right hand plucking fingers. Men with long manicured fingernails are all 'odd' - Fact.
19.
After a couple of tunes you will recognise patterns and licks that the particular player uses often,it doesn't matter if it's Flea,Claypool,Marcus,Victor or whoever-everyone does it-and once you can play their licks and ideas,it becomes easier and you learn less.
That seems like a real positive to me. And as you say, undertaking a similar exercise for a variety of artistes will extend your own vocabulary. I recently put a lot of work into rehearsing for a Bowie tribute. Identifying patterns between what, at first listen, appear to be very different songs written decades apart I found particularly rewarding.
20.
Why would you want to learn an album of songs if you weren't going to gig them? I understand learning and practising a song, a riff or a technique but I'm with Bilbo on this. A whole album, why?
A few months back Bilbo said in a different thread that hard work and learning is fun. That's the answer. Also, even if I never gigged the actual songs. I would definitely be gigging what I learned from them.
21. In a recent issue of Bass Guitar Magazine (64) Billy Sheehan said: "When I do clinics I always tell people, 'Go and learn the whole of Sgt. Pepper - you'll come out of it a better bass player'". Well, armed only with my Beatles songbook I've decided that I will put this to the test. The reason for posting this is to see whether anyone wants to join me and share thoughts etc. Kind of like a book club. But different. Cheers

Bowie Tribute

Playing a Bowie tribute tonight with the Spiderz at the Harwich Electric Palace. Have really been looking forward to this.
23.
I am not going to get the Beiber gig because I am 25 years too old but, that aside, I am pretty confident that any MD worth his salt would recognise that I was not actually interested and my presence would be a negative influence on the band dynamic, even if I was up to the gig playing wise. But, if it was my choice, I'd walk anyway
'Bieber & Bilbo' has quite a ring to it, though, don't you think? I'd definitely buy a ticket.
24.
I don't know this, please elaborate.
In Joe's Garage, music is made illegal and the story follows the exploits of Joe (who used to be a nice boy). In the liner notes Zappa states that music is actually illegal in Iran. I don't know if this is/was true. I won't say any more because I think that you should go and listen to the album. But needless to say it is lyrically hilarious and musically mind blowing. Keep it greasy,
25. The answer lies in Zappa's "Joe's Garage". p.s. Why does it hurt when I pee?
