Unpopular Musical Opinions: What are Yours?
Heathy replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
People like Jacob Collier are bad for music. There isn’t a bass solo in existence that wouldn’t sound better played on another instrument. The best bass sound ever is on ‘Superman’ by Black Lace. -
Scott's Bass Lessons technique accelerator
Heathy replied to nekomatic's topic in Theory and Technique
Subscribed to this over the weekend. After 37 years of playing, there were a few eye openers for me in the very first video. Looks like a good investment, but I’ll keep you updated. -
I played a Kubicki X Factor throughout the 90s. Since then it has been mostly Fenders. I suppose my signature bass would be based on the Kubicki, but would be passive and have a more traditional body shape.

Would you return a new instrument for a dodgy jack?
Heathy replied to Jono Bolton's topic in General Discussion
I would take it back. It’s either fit for purpose, or it isn’t. -
Numerous easy solutions to this I expect. Here’s one: adjust the angle of your hand so the lower part of your thumb is also muting the A and E strings. I have recently adopted this type of approach after moving to a 5 string. Thumb isn’t floating, but neither is it anchored onto the string.

I would find that kind of Diva behaviour unacceptable, regardless of how good he is. Right or wrong, my reaction would probably be to dig my own heels in!

Recordings where the bass is out of tune?
Heathy replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
E string sounds out to me on the isolated track (Listen from around 1:20). However, still an amazing line, and works in the mix. -

A popular modern choice is likely to be Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran.

As a teenager I spent hours studying the cover to Iron Maiden's Powerslave. So that's mine for sure.

I am looking to sell my virtually new Music Man Sterling 5-string. (Not to be confused with Sterling by Music Man). This bass is a pacific blue burst, with a black pickguard, maple fretboard and 3-band EQ. It was bought new in September 2020, and due to the COVID restrictions is yet to be played ‘in anger’. It has, however, had a professional set-up. It is a great bass, with a fast neck and low action. It comes with a EBMM hard case. Price is £975. Collection preferred, or buyer to arrange shipping. However, I would be happy to meet up within a reasonable distance (I am based in North Essex). Not looking for trades. Sorry! Thanks for all of your responses. To clarify - there is still an issue when playing unplugged - which is what I do a lot of the time. So not an amp/EQ matter I would say. I am only finding this issue on my MM Sterling, which is strung with Rotosounds. I recently bought a second 5'er (Fender Jazz) - same scale as the Sterling - and there is no such issue with the Fender strings. I have ordered some more Fender strings for the Sterling, which I hope will resolve the issue - particularly as it's a much easier bass to play.

Hi All I have recently moved to playing five string basses after 35 years playing four strings. I have always used Rotosound strings during that time, and have been very happy with them. However, having added a 5-string set to one of the new basses, I find that the B is really (I mean REALLY) muddy. My question is - Is this just likely to just be a dud, or do some brands produce notoriously bad B-strings. Also could there be an issue with the bass? Any thoughts / recommendations would be appreciated. Cheers

My list would definitely include Frank Zappa - YCDTOSA Volumes 1 - 3, Broadway the Hard Way, The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life etc. AC/DC - If you want blood Iron Maiden - Live After Death

Due to my strict “Always two there are, a master and an apprentice”* policy, I am selling my 2016 American Standard Jazz Bass. This will then make me a fully-fledged member of the 5-string ‘Dark Side’. This bass is a creamy looking Olympic white, with a tort pickguard and rosewood neck. Its retro look is enhanced by a ‘ding’ (pictured) which I understand arose from an argument with a cymbal in an earlier life. It was sanded smooth and does not affect playability. It is a great bass, with a great tone and low action. It comes with a Fender hard case. I am looking for £650. Socially-distanced collection preferred, or buyer to arrange shipping. However, I would be happy to meet up within a reasonable distance (I am based in North Essex). Not looking for trades. Sorry!
