Does playing covers sap your imagination and playing
SJA replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
I've been in some originals bands that have stifled my creativity more than covers bands 'ever' have!
me too- one original band where the guitarist kept nitpicking over what i was playing and singing so much that he might as well have recorded it himself, and then used a tape of it live, and another where the guitarist only seemed to know the pentatonic scale, and struggled to play anything i wrote, or to transpose even one of his own riffs. learning lots of covers would have help him get out of the rut he was in, even if he was too cynical to learn theory & technique directly. -
I added a pic of Tim Butler's 70's P in your rebuild thread, it looks solid red from a distance, but the grain becomes apparent closeup. here's one from google image search- http://www.vintage-guitars.se/1980_Fender_...ion_Bass_WR.jpg and a strat- http://www.guitarsandeffects.com/images/b379wine.jpg I saw a 70's P in that colour in vintage & rare a couple of years ago.

don't play the G on the bass side too hard, or it'll be buzzing against the bridge of the guitar side, and probably the pickups too....

the Fender logo should be closer to the end of the headstock. he shouldn't have bothered putting it on.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
SJA replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I don't fancy tracking down a replacement tuning adjuster knob for that Rail though.... -
re. Steve Harris, I've read interviews where he says he writes the main guitar parts on his songs too.....which would explain why so many Iron maiden songs are stuck in that same C, D, Eminor progression with the twin harmony guitars over it.....

it's handy to have books like the Ultimate Guitar book and the Bass Book by Tony Bacon/Barry Moorhouse, and the Fender Bass book around to check on details of guitars & basses- I can see how the vintage market can be a potential minefield. Bookcase were selling off the Bass Book for a fiver or so a few years back- if everyone had a copy it would help stop scams like this.

check out the gap at the neck joint- eek! mind you, that's authentic for 70's fenders, but not in a good way.

Hutchins 6-neck on ebay, no takers- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HUTCHINS-BEAST-6-NEC...1QQcmdZViewItem nice tent-sized gigbag.

"It has the correct Fender Transfer on the head stock" correct meaning "fraudulent".
-
looks okay to me- the only doubt being over the open channel linking the pickup rout and the control cavity- which wasn't on the 50's and 60's precisions. I assume they introduced it on the 70's ones and kept it for the 80's, 90's and current models.

he bought it without a neckplate? I call BS on that. imagine a jazz bass with just the 4 bolts in the body- I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole. why would it be missing the plate? "I asked at the time about the no serial no neck plate and was told it had been replaced" replaced with what? a "made in japan" one? as for his ignorance on guitars, check out his other listing for a Ned Callan bass- he seems to know a fair bit about that one.
Nope - no plug above the nut, wrong nut and the 'contour body' logo is missing. And no skunk stripe either.
damn, only just spotted the nut is a Gibson style one- ie. butts against the end of the fingerboard, whereas on a Fender it should sit in a slot in the fingerboard.
However, if I had to point to some damning evidence, I'd say this might be it. It's the last purchase he's made, 11 June 2008. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250249467610 His bass auction was posted 15 June. I don't now if he could've received the neck plate in time for those photos, but it all looks very questionable.
neckplate off a 1972 Fender- serial no. 339148 and he claims the jazz is from 1972 "The Serial number starts 339XXX". too much of a coincidence.

the body looks like it's come off some Columbus Japcrap, with the rounded pickups. the end contour is almost like a precision. is that a real fender neck though?

try using some switch cleaner on the jack socket and pots. I use Servisol that maplins stock.

trans red is nice- Tim Butler of the Psychedelic Furs has one (trans red, maple neck, black pickguard), and I saw one like it in Vintage & Rare, denmark st.

if you add a second vol pot for the J, or a panpot, you might just notice the P soloed might sound a tiny bit darker than it used to, due to the loading of the pots. a 3way switch avoids that, but you don't get the blending capability. I got around that on my Warmoth P with a 5way rotary switch, and some tricky wiring. check out some PJ Fenders (US hotrod P, Jazz special, US precision plus, aerodyne, JP90, and Squiers (squier precision special, Frank Bello sig).

What Bass ? Punchy Sound + Precision Neck + Pickgaurd
SJA replied to BassBomber414's topic in Bass Guitars
My combo is a single 1x15" and has a tendency to sound a bit wooly with the Precision PUP of my Yammy BB414.However the Jazz PUP is at the bridge so tends to sound a bit thin.Anyone suggest anything ?
another suggestion- keep your Yamaha but try using an amp with 12" or 10" speakers instead for more punch. a 2 X 12", 2 X 10" or 4 X 10". -
Option A ) help her with her bass playing
was help asked for? if the player, the band and the crowd are happy, i don't think help is needed. once at a gig between sets some bloke was spouting off about bass playing at the bar, and I spoke to him just to hear what he had to say, and he was going on about how "you got to file those frets down" on a fender precision. I didn't tell him I'd built the warmoth P I was playing that night. at the end of the gig he turned up at the side of the stage - gesturing for me to hand my bass over for him to show what was wrong with it- or my playing. I scowled at him- he got the message and f*cked off

a bit confusing what's happened to Turnkey/Soho Soundhouse- PMT have bought it, and are keeping the staff on, but there's no store yet????
From what I can tell with the pick-ups, they're designed to be rotated to change the angle of the pole-pieces in relation to the string. I guess the fancy extra bits are to make that easier?
UK's Gordon Smith made basses with rotatable individual pickups so the 2 polepieces could be parallel or at right angles with the string. someone in Bassist or Guitarist's "my bass is" had a couple. IIRC the bass model name was "Gypsy".

Fender Jazz on eBay - Need some opinion...

note it's been strung through the body- that's definitely a mod as Fender pass the strings through in line with the mounting screws. if it was professionally done the ferrules on the back should be in line and the paint won't be chipped or lifting where the holes were drilled.
