I was going through some of my old leads tonight and re-soldering one or two, and I have a very old 1980's curly glow-in-the-dark lead (that doesn't any more). Re-soldered the plug, tested it - I think the sheilding's gone somewhere - sounds ok but has a dreadful hum.
my first guitar lead was my brother (guitarist) 's old curly glow-lead. same story as yours- I put new jack plugs on it but it buzzed really badly. I binned it and got a cheap leem lead and the noise was gone. I've still got a Tascam cassette 4track- i like how immediate it is- no-boot-up waiting, but the sound is dull compared with digital, and the mixer is a bit noisy.

I think this is what is termed a "night watchman" in Viz- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=10427

this is more sensible- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-PRO-QUADRUPLE-NE...oQQcmdZViewItem

Squier do a couple- the pete wentz P and the vintage modified jazz.

the singer of the last original band I was in kept bugging me to get a more retro-looking bass (meaning 60's-styled) - I was tempted to get one of those Dean Zone basses just to say "is this what you meant by retro?" mm, a green one, with green LED's, and a glow-in-the-dark curly lead...
-
the guitarist/singer of the band I used to be in, Instant Flight, Marco, had an Eko bass just like that. it had the same type of neck neck they used on their violin basses- very narrow. he sold it to one of his guitar students for £200.

in 2006 I recorded with a band at Toerag studios, and used their Selmer treble & bass valve head into a Selmer David 1X18 cab - very thick, traditional tone, no high mids. not really the tone I'd choose myself, but it fitted the whole retro signature sound of that studio. 2 songs from those sessions- "Oxygen" and "Equilibrium" are on my myspace (I played fingerstyle on my warmoth parts p-bass)

probably sounds like a G&L L2000 or ASAT on the neck pickup in passive mode.

oh yeah, i downloaded Myung's video- monotone drone; "now here's a pattern in such and such a key/mode etc." "now here's a pattern in a different key/mode etc." X100 (a bit like Steve Coogan's "no-one died" pool supervisor in the Day today) John Entwistle's masterclass with Arlen Roth is similarly droney. come back Billy Sheehan & Wolf Marshall, all is forgiven...
Anyone out there listening to BBC Radio 6 on DAB? Check the Stuart Maconie Freak Zone show on Sunday evenings
yeah, longtime listener to 6music and the Freakzone- Maconie likes his prog. Gryphon, Yes, ELP and bizarre european prog-fusion. as well as lots of experimental stuff. shame that controller Lesley Douglas is dumbing down the station (less music, more banal chat) with George lamb and Alan Carr though. this guy seems to get decent results from his Wishbass though- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua9nQwFD2uc

Bass Player mag did a feature ages ago on short scale basses- one was a short-lived run of basses by National (IIRC) which was basically guitar bodies and necks with 4 bass strings on them- 25in scale. this looks similar. watch out for extremely slack string tension!

I've got an RBX270F. looks like the hex nut that goes on the end of the rod is missing.
-
an addition to the XTC books- Song stories. and if you're a Stranglers fans, "Hugh Cornwell- song by song" is a must- he's interviewed about every Stranglers song when he was in the band. he talks quite a bit about JJ's basslines and the recording processes.
-
Dave Lee Roth- crazy from the heat the guy can talk all the limbs off a donkey and then some. great story about the plan to use a tank to crush a VW beetle supposedly belonging to headliners Aerosmith (an aborted followup to the "Van Halen parachuting into the arena" stunt). and he explains the "no brown M&M's" rider stipulation. Midge Ure- if I was I got it for £4.99. but it was later going in Poundland- well worth a read for insights on the music biz from an artist's perspective.
-
why doesn't he just put that Jazz pickup in and add a 2nd vol control- he might shift it then. god knows what that body is- the colour looks a bit garish and new for a 14-yr-old bass.

"I had this on ebay before but removed the listing as I found out it had been modified, originally it was a no pick guard model with a rear cover for the pots, it has been altered to a more standard look with a pick guard and had some wood removed where the pots would have been mounted through the body, this does not show as it's under the guard, the jack socket has also been relocated to the pickguard, this also has a factory original second pick up route like a jazz bass so could easily be modified to jazz bass spec. " changed his story quite a bit from "this is how it left the factory"....

I love the bassline on "Criminal world" on let's dance. I think he used a spector NS2 back then, or a PJ precision.
-
Whatnauts- help is on the way strangely the same bassline is on "Act like you know" by Fat Larry's band. dunno which came first, but it's a rip-off. it's also sampled on De La Soul's "name and number".
-
urk, looks like he used a worm to line up those string-thru holes...
-
I'm learning guitar and keyboards. keyboard technique is valuable for easy access to loads of sounds- including synth bass.
-
wonder if it sounds any better than a squier VM fretless now, what with all the glue holding it together....
-
Narada Michael Walden- I should have loved ya (TM Stevens) the Whispers- and the beat goes on Sister Sledge- thinking of you, he's the greatest dancer (Nard Edwards again)

Bass Player: "I've used the same stuff for 20 years"
SJA replied to stingrayfan's topic in General Discussion
if that curly lead's lasted 20 years it must have supernatural powers.... -
unable to decide what instrument you want to play? well now you don't have to with the bass/mandolin/banjo/guitar!
