1. Playing exactly the same as the original song only really works if the rest of the band are doing the same. I play the same songs differently with different bandmates if it works better that way.
2. I know it's not entirely what you want but you could buy a 12ohm retro two 10 and have your current one converted to 12ohm and run at 6ohm parallel load. You then get the option of a third one (God forbid) if you ever get the urge.
3. We played on the roof of the ashmolean museum in Oxford last summer whilst the Randolph hotel directly opposite was on fire.
4. I had a yob precision once. It was a total pup so sold it on again.
5. Everyone is just following the "one in one out" policy and flogging their five string in order to buy one of the many that are for sale. It's snowballing!
6. After some advice if I may I have agreed to do a bunch of gigs on drums this summer. I've been playing about 2 yrs and love it and to be fair I'm probably as good on drums as bass (which ive been playing for 24yrs) already. The guys I'm going to be playing with have heard me play plenty of times so they're happy with my ability. I'm really happy playing to a click because when I practice I put on my big cans and use a metronome a lot and although there's no tracks being used or anything I'm going to use in ears for monitoring and using a click to keep me on track. Obviously I don't want to use my big headphones so does anyone know of a decent wired in ear setup with earplugs that are good for excluding the noise of my kit? I don't want to spend silly money if possible so any reasonably priced suggestions would be appreciated.
7. I recently picked up a Dell for £549 with an i7 processor, 1TB hard drive and 16gig of ram. It has happily tracked loads of recording sessions already without skipping a beat. If money was no object I would defo go Mac for reliability and the fact that they don't slow down over time without regular maintenance. For what I spent on the Dell though it's great for recording. I should add though that I bought it purely for recording so there's virtually nothing other than reaper installed on it and the hard drive is empty (I use an external hard drive when tracking).
8.
Ah. Doh! It's only the controller that's WiFi. All the processing and mixing is done in the mixer. Hard wired. If the wifi crashes it's no biggie, the hardware must just stay at its last known settings. Obvious really.
Yep that's it exactly. If your controlling device fails the mixer just keeps doing what it was last told to do. If you have everything set up from a previous gig it's just a case of tweaking at the next gig to suit venue. When you connect your iPad / laptop etc at the start of a new session you get asked if you want to sync the settings from the mixer (the last settings before you shut it down last time) to the iPad / laptop so it doesn't even matter if you use a different control device at each gig. You can also sync from ipad to mixer so if the settings are saved on your ipad / laptop but you're using a different mixer then its no problem. It's really clever stuff.
9.
I don't see any need to take Blue's comment so seriously. I don't think he meant that if you don't want to gig in pubs then you should give up bass. I think he meant that if you don't want to gig in pubs, you should give up gigging in pubs
Yep I probably shouldn't have hijacked the ops thread but this is more a response to this in conjunction with many of Blue's other posts elsewhere. My bad.
10.
I say if you don't like gigging your really not in this. Blue
Blue you really do make me laugh. You say that people who don't gig aren't really "in this", you criticise people who only play weekends, you say that to you are living the dream on your gig money but it's all just nonsense really. I am one of the "weekend warriors" that you have previously stated are ruining live music and that they should leave it for the full timers. I have a day job so I don't have to play all the bar gigs because I've been there and done that 1000 times over and I just don't get excited by them anymore. I still live for playing live though but these days I prefer to be doing functions etc in nice venues playing music that I love with great players. Ironically my weekend warrior work currently brings me considerably more than the income you make from your work (based on figures you posted a few months back on another discussion). It's absolutely great that you love what you do, really it is but if I thought that I would end up single and playing pubs for a living in my retirement I'd probably top myself now.....because we all get different things from this and that's not what I want to get from it. If people want to sit at home recording in their bedroom then they are no less "in this" than you or I. It's like saying "blokes that just kick a football about in the park with their mates should go home and leave it to the pros". Nonsense, music needs people of all abilities and commitment levels, no matter what they want to get from playing, to keep it alive and keep the people at the top of the tree on their toes. Without the millions of bedroom musicians around the world buying gear there would be far less money poured into development of new technology and gear so it makes the whole scene richer. About time you looked outside your little box and showed a little respect for those that happen to see things differently from you.
11.
I think if we were all trying to scrape a living from gigging, then we'd put up with an awful lot of crap for a paying gig.
This makes a lot of sense to me. That's why I have a day job (that thankfully I enjoy and is flexible enough to allow me to gig whenever I want) so I can choose not to play grotty bar gigs week in week out and why I don't have to tolerate the intolerable in the form of moody band mates.
12.
Pity they are like rocking horse poop to find second hand, might have to buy new THEN tell the misses......RUN...............!!
Let me know as soon as you buy the new one so I can buy the second hand one that pops up on here while you wait for yours to be delivered.
13. Just been reading up and Dulwich Estates sounds like a posh old boys network who don't give a monkeys about the local area.
14.
It was flooded and heavily damaged, I think.
Ah I see. In that case it's a shame that Fullers got there first. Were there any other organisations in the running to take over there or were Fullers the only ones who showed interest?
15. Yep agreed. No player is bigger than the band and if what they play makes the band sound worse and they have no intention of listening then they're worse than a waste of space. Get rid asap.
16. Why did it close down 2 and a half years back? If it's because it wasn't making money then either it was being run poorly (I'm pretty sure The Half Moon was one of the better run music venues) or the demand in the area for live music isn't high enough to sustain it. I know it's a real shame to lose live music venues but they, like any other business, need to be profitable. The history of the building is great and it has seen some great bands but that alone doesn't make a business case.
17. Worth considering selling the one10 and just getting a 4ohm two10? It's £100 less than two one10s. If it were me I'd be more tempted to do that I think as the two10 isn't that big either and you'd possibly get £250 for a one10 on here.
18. I've only got positive things to say about our behringer x-air xr18 set up. Easy to use, massive array of processing if you want it and saves masses of space in the van. No way in a million years that Id go back to a mixing desk now. We do weddings, corporate and private functions. If the gig is a big one that requires pa we use a local hire company who use a behringer x32 desk which allows wifi mixing too. With our set up we do foh mix from laptop then singer uses iPad air for his monitor mix. Drummer uses a galaxy tab something and guitarist uses his phone. Never had any problems.
19. Yep, set list flow is very important and makes the difference between a band and a show. Our MD is great at this and we regularly do 10 song medleys etc that keep a dance floor rammed.
20. Ive been off today and have set up PA system just so I can play about getting a nice bass sound through it. Will be totally irrelevant when I have to completely re eq it at the next gig to suit the room but it killed a few hours lol.
21. Guitarist in my function band tours with Tony Hadley and also plays in the house band for the rewind festivals. He never ever takes an amp as it's always hired in. When he joined us he had to buy an amp as he didn't actually own one so spent £80 on ebay for a fender combo with not a valve in sight. He has a Line 6 multi effects unit and that's what travels with him and he sounds great.
22. Seems your leap of faith with the drummer really paid off, he sounds great. Seriously good work though, it takes someone properly dedicated to drag a band to life. I really hope it works out for you.
23.
I don't think that can be right, surely. £30K maybe?
Yep I'm informed that total cost was £272k all in. The venue was a stately home in Oxfordshire so they brought everything including the stage, lighting, crew etc. Apparently only possible because they were touring but it was more expensive than previous private gigs as they had to bring the whole lot back from Europe just for the gig.
24. 1st world problems.... See how the new rig fares in a band situation and if it's good there too then you can alternate?
25. Was lucky enough to see them last February at a private 70th birthday party as a surprise for a friend of my Dad's. Apparently the birthday boy's wife paid just short of £300k for 45 mins. Worth every penny though. Bloody brilliant
