My 1st five string bass. Plays really well, sounds great and a bargain at £100 Well used with plenty of dings and knocks but solid and the blue flamed finish is really nice. The action is nice and low and fast. If you're considering trying a five string this is a great way in. Prefer collection from Silverstone Northants (Nr J15a of M1 and J10 of M40)

The RS cabs are worth the extra money for the looks alone. Seems they used the wood from the ugly tree to make the new cabs.

I have a tired but still perfectly useable Yamaha bbn5 that id sell for £80 plus shipping. I have three of them as I think they're brilliant for budget 5 stringers. I'll put an ad in classifieds this eve with pics or pm me if interested. Should add I have already paid annual fee for classified ads so this is not an attempt to duck the fees.

Really wish they were doing one with fanned frets in the same spec / price range as the sr1205 with the graphite neck rods and nordy singles.

Very nice indeed. The chap who gives me lessons uses a really nice Ibanez fretless and it sounds great and looks cool.

would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(

Pretty sure that was part of the problem notable9, the drummer in my main band is so good it highlights just how bad this chap was. -
Chrismanbass I was referring to a post from MoonBass Alpha about The Cellar in Oxford. For some reason I can't get the quote function to work.

Thanks Mark, yeah it feels like a weight has been lifted too. -
Quote MoonBassAlpha That's Oxford for you. The most disappointingly clique'y and dull music scene for a city with plenty of arts culture. Lived there most my life and hardly ever gig there. Surrounding towns like Abingdon, Wantage, Bicester, Didcot, Witney, Banbury and beyond all have far better venues and crowds.

Wow thanks for all the sound advice and for sharing thoughts on the subject. I have today quit the band with the poor drummer. I tried as diplomatically as possible to encourage improvement but he simply wouldn't accept that he had any timing issues. We played a pub last night and it was embarrassing at times. At one point he was only required to keep a steady hi-hat going whilst the guitarist strummed an intro. He was all over the place and I could see the guitarist, singer and punters all exchanging looks. They'll never get rid of him as he's their mate so in that instant I knew it was time to walk. I've offered to honour every existing booking but as soon as a replacement is found I'm off. Anyone in the North Oxon / South Northants area looking for a band to join with a slightly iffy drummer? Such a shame as guitarist and singer are both really really good and all three are smashing people. -
Pubs - Green Day's "Time Of My Life" followed by Electric Six's "Gay Bar" Functions- Varies a lot but quite often Bill Medley / Jennifer Warnes "Time Of My Life"

Does anyone have or have experience with a BTB1405? I really like the look and I've had an SR605 before which I enjoyed playing but never really liked the look of it. I'm not buying anything without trying but its a fair haul from here to the nearest shop with one in stock so I'm trying to gather opinions first.

Yep, agree with both the above. If it's too loud for you then turn it down. A decent mic into the pa if venue requires more vol.

What was it like for you being a bass beginner?
mrtcat replied to Gomez68's topic in General Discussion
Started late teens and played my first gig a week after holding a bass for the first time. A friends band lost their bassist and I was in. Found it pretty easy to play passable bass lines for covers although they were usually pretty simple versions. I have gigged pretty much ever since and have improved a lot over time. Only just started having lessons this year at the age of 38 and finding it really beneficial. I think as a teenager I'd never have stuck lessons out but now I love them and have a great teacher that I have real faith in. -
It's now dominated by the Rockbass line, which are fine instruments in their own right I guess, but essentially £400-£800 for a Chinese made budget-line that sound NOTHING like the basses they are supposed to be aping. At least Squiers sound exactly like Fenders, Sterling by Musicman sound 99% like real Musicman's etc etc.
I have a Rockbass Streamer and a German stage 1 Streamer and they sound very similar and even more worryingly they both play beautifully. I'd recommend the Rockbass streamers very highly.

It's totally different for different types of band. A function band with a repertoire of hundreds of songs doing requests or playing stuff at the call of an md are totally ok to have music stands. That band works by being polished and flexible so that's a valid reason. A pub rock band knocking out time old classics with a set of 30 songs and maybe a dozen spares just look terrible imo with stands as the whole point is to be engaging and rock n roll and a bit rough and reasy. Using a stand in a pub tells me they either don't know their stuff or they're taking themselves way too seriously. I'd never play a pub with a regular singer / guitarist if he /she needed a stand.
OP, how on earth did you end up in a band with a bad drummer ?
When I went to audition they wanted to do five songs and I can now see the drummer picked them as they're the five he plays best. -

Yep I see a consensus forming here. I can't see the drummer leaving as he and the guitarist are great mates and the founders of the band. I was wary when I joined but at the time needed the money really badly due to being made redundant. Money is no longer an issue so I'm pretty sure I'm going to tactfully cut my losses. I guess the next dilemma is do I give my reasons and hope it helps them in the long run or just make excuses and leave. I could just tell them that the problem is getting me down and see if the drummer is open to the idea of practicing and even gigging with a metronome. I don't want to stitch them up at all but it is no fun at the moment. -
Would you be happy for Daltrey to take the stage

He'll yeah as long as he didn't cock up mustang Sally and Sex On Fire. -
New bergantino cn210 is on its way. Think it's just been launched in the states. May be worth a look.
