Fender Ashtray and Neck pickup covers on a jazz bass
mrtcat replied to dakanoosh's topic in General Discussion
I'll have a search around, I'm using an American Deluxe Jazz and was more worried if the actual size of the bridge could be a factor.
Yeah defo try before drilling into such a nice bass.
pupcoverless planks of wood).
Brilliant terminology! Love it -
I've got a pair of ACS 15 and they're great for me.
+1 ACS plugs are great. £130 may seem like a lot but if you get tinnitus or worse you'd give anything to be able to go back in time and buy some. I took a few months to get used to them as initially you can feel a little detached from the music but you MUST persevere as you will get used to them and then you're set for a lifetime of playing. Too many folk have had to give up due to ear problems. Plugs should be as impoprtant as an amp and a bass to you. I always keep some cheap spares in guitar cases, amp bag, glovebox and microphone case - onceyou get used to them you'll never know how you lived without them. If you take bass playing seriously then you have to take looking after your hearing seriously too.

What is your favourite song to play live?
mrtcat replied to garymilitia's topic in General Discussion
I just love AC/DC's whole lotta rosie and Motley Crue's Girls Girls Girls but my current favourite is Steel Panther's Asian Hooker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqngrRBIpkw -

How would this work if you're using an amp with 2 channels? Some sound guys are a pain and I don't agree with the "my way or the highway" approach. I've run sound at several big venues in the past and it makes chuff all difference if the bass player wants to use his amp's di or a mic. As long as the signal is reliable and safe then you work with the sound the bass player provides. It's up to him as long as he knows his time constraints and works to them. Sounds like the guy is a bit of an amateur. I used to love it when bass players used sansamps. Great tone served up in a nice clean signal. Players who constantly tinker with the sound throughout a gig are a nuisance tho.

Very tidy rig indeed. Love the BF cabs, although I have a berg (if I could have had a super 12 with a years interest free that's what I'd be using) but have never had the chance to try the orange head. Looks killer tho and will undoubtedly get plenty of attention at gigs. If it doesn't just slay them with volume!
You have not seen 'Vera' my mushy pea green £930 Morris 1000 then?
If Vera was a bass she'd be worth £1000's. Vintage, British, terrible colour.

Seem to be playing an old Yamaha BBG5 more and more these days. Worth £150. I have a nice US75 Jazz which I've gigged loads but the Yamaha sounds better at the mo. Money is irrelevant tho. I kitesurf and my kites are over £1k each and could be torn in a moment of non concentration or even lost if I needed to ditch one in an emergency. Likewise we all drive round in £ks worth of cars which could be banged, smashed or stolen. Insurance is key and after all a bass is just wood and metal and a bit of plastic.

Bass rigs-the bigger the better in my experience.
mrtcat replied to daveparker123's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think we should remember that there's a place for all these rigs but ultimately a bit of theatre never harmed anyone's live show. Big cabs look cool as .... so if transport and stage space was no issue then I'd have a monster rig in a heartbeat. As it is I have reasonably tidy size rig that sounds great and does the job brilliantly but it still feels kinda sterile. Much rather have a dirty great big cab behind me with half a metric ton of valve head sitting on the top. Mind you my guitard uses a little combo so it'd look funny. -
Back up for sale my TC Electronic Classic 450. This is in lovely condition which works perfectly with no marks and comes complete with a Gig Skinz bag which houses the head snugly in a fur lined bag that's made to measure. This is a great light yet powerful head which is very simple to use with on board multi band compressor and a genius pre and post amp valve drive emulator. I can't fault this head at all but am after a change to go with a cab I'm hoping to aquire in a trade here on BC. I bought this from Mark at BassDirect in October 2010 and still have original box, manual and power lead. I want £340 for this as the condition is great and it comes with the gig bag. Would also trade for: Trade wise I'm looking strictly for a GK Fusion 550 with cash your way or a Genz Streamliner 600 also with cash your way. Prefer collection but will meet / deliver within 40 miles of OX26 for free. Will ship for £10. Feel free to come and try this. I'm in Bicester, Oxfordshire (J9 M40). I'll hook it up to a quality cab and you can put it through its paces.

Anyone tried a 5string and not like them? And why?
mrtcat replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I use both all the time. I find that using both often is the best approach. It forces me to get my head around them both being different. I'm now quite comfortable on either. I would suggest starting with a lower price one so you minimise outlay. I swapped a four string bass worth around £150 on here for a cheap yamaha BBg5 and it sounds and plays lovely. I reckon the only way you'll know if you'll get on with a fiver is to try as it appears some find it easier than others. -
Play in a busy covers band. We earn ok (£250 - £800) and are getting busier all the time. Drummer keeps trying to push our prices up. Recently we've done some good festivals and functions but we've got a couple of regular pub gigs coming up which although are not mega bucks still fall within our price range although at the lower end. Got the following text last night: Just updating calendar. I had overlooked july 13th. Can't do it I'm afraid. And I can't do 24th aug. Sorry. Can call venues if you want. Surprise surprise the only two pub dates. Now I'm furious about this. To me a commitment is a commitment regardless of price. Luckily we have a friend who teaches drums who has agreed to step up but of course our drummer didn't know this when he sent the text. I also got made redundant recently and drummer knows that any cash is a big bonus to me right now. What would you do? Tempted to ask our drummer friend if he fancies it long term although I know he's busy and has other commitments.

We have a few weddings booked this yr where we've been asked to keep the volume to a reasonable level. This is all good but, as with most bands, our volume is dictated by the volume of the acoustic drums. Our drummer is a fairly firm hitter and says hitting softer affects technique. I have no reason to doubt it as he's an honest guy. He's open to suggestions tho for taming the levels. He works really hard to get a really nice sound from his kit and it would be a shame to compromise on this. It would also be nice to be able to mic things for regular gigs and then bring the level up when needed using the PA. How do you guys do it? Do you have any damping ideas or anything?
