To behonest, is a very small adjustment I need to file, it probably only need to do the E string only. I will buy a set of needle files and try to fix it. The worse case get a new nut. If i don't try i don't learn .......
-
I've got no option unless I leave it as it is and see how it goes. I may buy a low gauge one from a different brand. No damage done so far, the strings sit on the nut but just not fully press ........
-
The string does go in but not fully press, it leaves a very very small gap at the bottom. Doesn't sound like it will cause a problem in terms of tone and sound unplug. I need to plug it in an amp tonight to try. I just need to widening a little bit.

hmm. The bass is at home at the moment, I was thinking about a small round needle file that properly work better.

I decided to restring my bass this morning and discover the rotosound set doesn't sit probably on the nut on my fretless bass. My bass originally have some black nylon strings on but clearly is not the full set because the original E and A string looks like the same gauge ....... Altho the string sits on the nut but is not fully press and I tune it up and it play ok unplug. Will this cause a problem? or shall I go and buy some sand paper and open the hole a little to fit the strings?

I can imagine their 4x10 will be super loud but only if I have someone lift the thing for me lol.
-
You are damn right. I use Trace GP11 amp along with the 15" inch 1153 cab. It sounded absolute loud, with the price of trace elliot i think i may wait for a 1153 cab on sale and grab a second one. 2x15 trace cab will be unbelievably loud .....
-
I have a very old GP11 preamp (from the 80's) and it sounded fantastic.
-
Trace Elliot is good stuff if you know how to tweak the EQ to your taste. Only downside vis the weight, if weight is not a problem they are one hell of a beast.
-
Yeah that sound about right, i might even offer £100 consider the cosmetic of the body.

By looking at the photo, altho the condition is not mint but is recentable. A few chipped on the paint and that paint artwork on the back. How much do you think I should paid the owner if he ask for the money? I don't like keeping hold of things for nothing because i do want to remove that paint work on the back but can't do that without legally owning the bass first, just incase that means something to the owner.
Each to their own I guess - the problem I found with Roto flats (on an SR5) was the extreme tension - felt like you needed to be a champion arm wrestler to play it. To be fair I didn't re set the bass up, persevered for a month or two - just ditched the strings. I have EB Group 3 flats on my fretless Ray and they have similar tension to rounds, as do TI flats.
Talking about the rotosound flats, I just change my mind on my opinion on them. I recently restrung my fretless with a set of used roto flats and I took them off straight away. Way too much tension for my taste on the fretless bass. It kinda remind me why I didn't use them anymore. I've order a set of roto black nylon flats which suppose to be less tension so hope it will go well on my fretless.
Most Thunder 1A basses have the coil tap as a separate switch so if there's a coil tap on this one it's probably a push/pull on the volume pot. Looking down at the bass as you play it the leftmost pot should be the volume, the middle pot should be the passive tone (which is basically a conventional treble cut - this also works in active mode) and the rightmost pot should be the active tone which ought to have a centre détente. You turn the active EQ on using the small switch. The active tone seems to be a parametric type control offering a fixed boost with a sweep frequency, one way it boosts in the treble frequencies, the other way it boosts in the bass frequencies - the passive and active tone pots work together so you can have some unusual combinations of the two.
You are damn right about the controls. I kinda worked it out already apart from the push/pull coil tap which I haven't try it yet. Will give it a try tonight. Got some new rotosound tru bass black nylon strings on its way to string on these. I absolutely love this bass, best fretless i've play so far for the price. I think I will buy this bass off the owner since he don't really care about it for the last 5 years, or I may even get it for free lol.

The battery counter part and the pots counter part is plastic i think, I need to double check. If so, i guess is best not to put it on that part i guess?
-
The acetone is polish remover right? Do it put it in some cloth and just rub it on the paint area on the back?
-
I really like the bass. Not my hass atm so not going to sort the back out yet. String wise i got a set of roto flats on but 8 think the tension is too much for my taste on this bass. I think i need to put black nylon flats on when i have money. Lovely fretless to play on after a quick tried. The side dots actually is in the right place.

Just got this bass today, altho it was a long term borrow but potentially could be mine if I want to buy it. Any info on this bass? apart from MIJ. The preamp is 18v which require 2x 9v battery and it seems two of the knob does nothing in passive mode?

I think I kinda sorted for now. A friend of my got a Westone unline fretless bass lying in his house for over 5 years and he will borrow the bass to me for long term or give it to me if I like the bass. I guess is a good way to try fretless without buying one to see if i like it or not.

Dull strings is better then dead strings lol. I remember the strings on my bongo when i first had it was so dead that is unplayable ..... Sound is woody and floppy lol.
-
I have P, J, and MM. Picking order would be, P , J and MM. Thats why the MM hardly get use lol. MM would be my first choice of bass if I don't know what venue I will be playing. It gives me more option when needed.

I use to have one in my jazz bass before converting it back to default. Great preamp no doubt about that, when I do use it on the bass I hardly touch the bass, treble and treble boost knobs. Only use the 2 mid control. Like above mention, the preamp colour the bass tone with bass boost by default. It could be a good thing depend on your taste. I always find it I need to use the mid control to blend in with the band.

Roto is pretty cheap and is great. The only thing i don't like them is the brightness don't stay for long before it start getting dull again ....... I like their flats tho. Nice tension and brightness in my opinion.
