my jazz bass is active, i have J-Retro install so it gives me that flexibility then a traditional jazz bass with 2 vol and 1 tone. I'm agree with having a stingray it does the sound slightly better and more easier because the bass just sound trebly natural.
I use to have a stingray but don't get on with me. Got a ACG 5 string in return.
I mention I wanted that flea clanky tone. I'm definite sure a jazz can get that tone.
low action is definite i need to setup first. I mean when i hit the string hard i getting no clank at all ........ my jazz bass can definite get that sort of tone but i need to set the bass up right first.
yeah we talking about finger style (not pick), flea uses finger style and he pick hard. Look like i'm doing it wrong starting from EQ, i'm boosting mid instead of scoop and boost treble =.= then my right hand technique is also wrong, i need to give this a try tomorrow. Planning to lower the action but not too low as well.
maybe is time to re-setup my jazz bass again. I kind of don't like the too much bass thump kind of tone these days for whatever reason. I use to love it but really don't like it now .........
The thing is i can't reproduce any clank at all with my action atm, is not too high but not too low either. I've tried dig it as hard as i could on some lick i'm playing but still no luck. Thats include experiment on boosting mid/treble and cutting some bass etc.
What i mean by clanky punch tone is the flea bass tone. I'm trying to get that tone on my jazz by boosting mids and treble and striking the bass with force but still no clank or that punch i'm looking for.
I got to admit my bass is not low action. Will low action and abit of fret buzz will give me that funky punch tone?
Gibson and Rickenbacker for me. They look so cool and bad a** but when i actually plug it in to play it certainly doesn't convince me to paid four digit for it.
I can never get on with those 2 brand.
Talking about warwick. My first warwick i had and i still feel gutted now is a 4 string early corvette std with EMG jazz pickup and 2 band John East preamp. The bass feel and sounded fantastic.
I still don't believe i sold it for £400 .......
Not the best photo but here they are, straight out from the package. Neck feels good and no rough edges on the side as well. Fret seems ok but not sure till is fitted and play. The headstock is not 100% like the fender but i'm ok with that since this is a project bass to suit my taste and the shape of the headstock does not bother me.
I've finally got my maple jazz neck from the post today. Look and feel beautiful. Gonna take it to a friend to help me installed it over the weekend. Can't wait to play my precision with jazz neck
The only bass is not modded is my 5 string ACG J type bass. Everything is stock and is sounded great already so no need to upgrade. But my jazz and precision, is all modded.
I use to run the Dimarzio DP123 on the jazz bass passive (pre j-retro install). It was good because i like boomer tone at that time, then i install j-retro to give my boom and EQ control. Love the bass at that time but now i find it really bassy and boomer, still love the preamp but i think a pickup change might be way to go. Like you said i'm keeping my eye out on a fender jazz pickup.
i use Dimarzio DP123 jazz pickup. They already a bassy pickup. I may want to change it to something else. I use to like bassy tone but now i like more mid tone ......
it really depend mate, before the rockbass line introduce with the W logo the corvette bass worth very little. Bought one for £399 and sold it for around £450 (all german made). Then later i bought a corvette 5 string std and some offensive offer in here offer me £200 for the bass and of course i did not sell. End up sold it for around £300 plus a precision bass in return as well.
Now with the new rockbass line introduce, it seems these corvette price jumped up to around £400-600.
Ideally you looking around the £400 region. but i could be wrong.
This is cheap for the bass, someone must pick this up. If this is the fretless version i would grab it off you. Actually i saw a fretles version of this bass in black today and it price way higher then this for used. So for £150 this is a bargain
i know the bass is boost only but i think is me got use to playing with mids then bassy tone. The preamp is still very versatile for my purpose but just need to get use to it again lol.
My Fender Classic 60 jazz had a J-Retro installed very long time ago before John East stuff became very expensive. I liked it very much when i first had it installed. I haven't play my Jazz for absolute ages because i'm so use to my Precision bass (passive) sound and my AGC 5 string P/J.
I decide to play my Jazz bass in today and set everything flat on both the amp and the j-retro i find it the default tone is very bassy (in a good way) but i just couldn't get use to it, i even have to pull the bass down and boost the mid instead.
Anyone find it the J-Retro to be a very bassy preamp by default? or I just got use to boost the mid and like the mid now?
