With J-J being probably the worlds most popular bass pick-up config, there's so much choice out there . I'm looking to pimp my Warwick 'vette and pickups on the list are Delano or Bartolini (but if I was doing a jazz I'd also have Nordstrand on that list or EMG JVs). Preamp wise, the East/ACG is getting really good reviews and comes in a three stacked pot config.

I've just checked my available funds and I can only afford 14 watts.
I've found it on the interweb for £189 plus £12 delivery. Good god, that's 40.2p/watt including delivery (or 38p without). That's dumb. I want one.
If we put in a joint order so we could split the delivery, that'd be 39p/watt. I love this arithmetic stuff :-)
P l e e z e people, stop adding to this thread and bumping it up on the radar - I'm desperately trying to justify not buying one of these amps as a backup!!!
At only 50p/watt I don;t think it's possible to justify it

Must remember to add the "have a piss" to my checklist - usually the urge doesn't hit until three songs in. Currently it's pack up my kit, head to singer's house (where the PA is kept)., phone guitard to find out where the hell he is, load up van, get to venue, unload van, supervise setting up PA while trying to stop singer throwing a hissy fit and stop drummer setting up his kit until the PA is together, give up and have a beer, sort out PA with soundguy, round-up sulking band mates for a soundcheck, all moan at guitarist for still having headphones held together with parcel tape instead of nice neat earbuds, ignore singer moaning that my monitor mix cannot possibly be of any use to me. Chill until its time to play.

Now I'm in trouble with Mrs C for not spotting that you guys were doing a gig local to us!

Whichever preamp you go for, Warwick do battery boxes (both 9v and 18v) that fit in the control cavity. Again www.warwick.de -

What the hell is a "pocket", more so a "deep pocket"?
clauster replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
I just found this quote, which I think sums it up quite nicely -
The phrase “in the pocket” is used to describe something or someone playing in such a way that the groove is very solid and with a great feel. When a drummer keeps a good metronomic pulse, often referred to as keeping time, and makes the groove feel really good, and maintains this feel for an extended period of time, never wavering, this is often referred to as a deep pocket… Today, the term “in the pocket” has broadened a bit, suggesting that if two musicians (usually the bass player and the drummer) are feeling the downbeats together, feeling and placing beat “one” at the exact same time, they are said to be “in the pocket.” Whether you are playing ahead (front) of the beat, or behind (back) of the beat, or right on top (middle) of the beat, as long as two musicians (ie. bassist and drummer) feel the downbeat at the same time, they’ll be in the pocket. Many people feel that the question is not so much what the pocket is as much as how you know when you’ve achieved it. To the musician, it feels like the music is playing itself, as though everything has merged together … all the rhythmic parts being played by one instrument.
-
Next gig booked up for the 22nd November at the Cross In Hand near Heathfield, East Sussex.

Glad I stumbled on this one. Was on the verge of spending £90 more than needed for the Korg Pitchblack for a not very good DI.

Forgot to say - You're amp does look fantastic.

I keep telling myself that the thunderbass is too wide to sit on top of my (eternally) inprogress omni10. Then the voices tell me to finish and sell the omni and build the 4X10 version of the bassman. AAAAAAARRRRGHGGHHHHHHH! More chlorpromazine please nurse!

Music Management - what's it all about eh?
clauster replied to BigBeefChief's topic in General Discussion
First you (as a band) need to decide what your goals are. Then you need to verify that anybody who is interested in managing you has realised those same goals for other bands. If they have, they'll be a good manager for your band, if not then stop drop them pronto. You might go through a few different management companies as you progress. I've been in two bands that had management (same management company). First time was great - we wanted paid original gigs, A&R men there and a record deal. They did this really well - loads of gigs, A&R people there regularly and we ended up in talks with Sony records, then the band went a**e up when the guitarist and drummer decided they didn't want to be pro musicians and left. Move on to a new band where we decided we wanted to write new stuff and throw some covers in as well and just do gigs for a while, hopefully earning enough to at least make sure the formative period could be financially self supporting. Management where a nightmare, didn't like the drummer, got us gigs we weren't ready for and cancelled ones we'd booked as they weren't prestigious enough. It's nothing you can't do yourselves (another band I was in got interest from Island records and we'd done everything ourselves), but having someone else do it for you means the band can get on with making music instead of booking and promoting gigs, hassling A&R men and finding lawyers who are good with music biz contracts. -
Nope, will-power failure! Must've spent at least two hours going over that site.

Must resist the urge to look at the Thunderbass head anymore!

Get the vocalist and guitarist to bang their heads together in a rhythmical manner while you come up with the killer bass riff
-
As another rock / punk player I found the Trace Elliot comp a bit too subtle for most of what I did. Great for slap 'n' pop though. Monte Allums modded CS3 is great if you want a high ratio and that opto-comp squish. I'm looking for something a bit less squishy. Top of my list is the JoeMeek Floor Q (when it finally gets to the shops) or a multicomp.

Can I swap my Doug Wimbish for a Paul Simenon please?
anyone wana help us figure out how to write a song?..
First you'll be wanting something to make those bang/crash noises. Drummers are traditional, but a drum machine or even metronome will do the job more reliably. Then you need to come up with a riff over some bars of the beat. Next step is the guitards problem!
