1. If my motorbike sells in the next couple of days, you'll be getting a PM
2. Just get those who don't like bass to sit on your amp while you play some nice deep riffs - I've been told its better than the washing machine
3. Some good asvice above - tinning wires and components is good advice. Having the right tools for the job will ake things easier - a pencil tipped iron of 20ish watts is great for sldering components to PCBs etc; for soldering wires to pots, it's quicker to use a higher powered iron with a flat tip - the pot will act as a heat sink and take a while to heat up with a low/medium powered fine-tip iron.
4. I am in the "subtle difference" camp. Same as Eric Johnson used to claim he could hear a difference between different guitar leads. +1 to the biggest differences being pickups and electronids (oh, and playing style).
5. I know someone does - Fralin I think? Edit - yep! http://www.fralinpickups.com/bass.asp Not cheap though $120 + the usual costs
6. BBC - for that money you could get yourself a nice Warwick Rckbass
7. Delano do one and so do Bartolini (I think)
8. Thanks for the feedback guys (I'll be forwarding the singer/sonwriter a link to this thread - he'll be chuffed). TBH the vocals could have been recorded better - when we recorded these none of us knew how to bypass the cosm effects on the inputs so all tracks (except drums/percussion) have a guitar or bass modelled preamp on them! Not great for your vocal sounds.

Good to hear that there's only a couple of caveats about weight and neck rather than "a don't touch with a barge pole". I've got smallish hands but have mostly played P's and now play a Warwick without probs. When I had a J it felt to dainty and I moved it on after a while. I think perhaps it is worth my while ringing GAK to check they're in stock and going and trying one. That Paul Grey looks good though.
10. Me likey!

Anyone got one? What's it like? I want to try owning a 5 string but don't want to spend a fortune and I've heard good things about the four stringers (and the pics of the all black jap version are gorgeous). I could go down to GAK and try one but the ex-wife lives within spitting distance so I don;t like going down there unless I have to.
12. I love EBs on my accoustic gittar - must try them on my bass ('speshally as my current set of Elites are a disappointment)
13. +1 to BenWhite's comments. Once I've nailed a complex bassline its in my head forever. The simple ones I can't remember a week later
14. Not tried the Multicomp (but want one), but the Compulator is a fantastic piece of kit. I really, really want another one (sold mine a while back). I like the Barge Concepts RC1 as well. Had an Aphex PF and it is good but not that indestructible. For the money I'd get a Boss CS3 and Monte Allums opto plus mod kit, just a transparent but (to my ears) more compression on tap.
15. Cheers Snicks!
16. I've got one of the 12"s that I use for rehearsals and DI into the desk for gigs. Sounds great DI'ed, the eq is really flexible. I don't really rate the tone as a combo, but hey, I only use it like that for band prctise.
17. I think your guitarist was experiencing the effect of bass frequencies spreading and highs going straight out. I was thirty to forty foot from your amp, but prettty much straight on to it, and there was no way it was too bassy. If anything the mids were more pronounced than previously. Just checked with MrsC and she said, "it sounded nicer."
18. Deeeeeeeelicious
19. Good to see you again too, and a cracking gig it was! (and many thanks for not mentioning the route we took to Worthing )
20. Cheers matey! Just arrived in my in box.
21. Nice one! I'll be watching with interest
22. The standard CS3 is crap for bass. Monte's mod transforms it to a great bass compressor but it does have that opto-comp squish rather than thud IMHO.
23. Belated PM sent
24. A couple of tunes I did early last year can be found here - http://www.myspace.com/maanic I'm playing on "Lately" and "Cheap" Be forgiving because I don't normally play funk and am crap at slapping. It was just something the three of us did because we didn't have anything better to do for a couple of weeks. The songwriter moved to Nottingham last year, but got in touch earlier this week to say I've gotta go up and lay down bass for more of his songs, which reminded me that MrsClauster did us a Myspace and I could tell you lot about it.
25. Yorks5stringer:
Anyone else ever see "Single Bass": she was called Jennifer Moore from around Nottingham way, maybe 10 years ago? She used to sing and accompany herself with lots of Jaco type slaps, chords and harmonics. I've still got her tape somewhere, "Be Your Friend" http://www.single-bass.co.uk/
I was lucky enough to do the live sound for one of her gigs almost 20 years ago. Bass into Yamaha SPX90 into PA Microphone for the vox Knew how to play and sing and really use FX creatively and musically. At sound check she stood in front of the stacks to check her sound - "You've got 6db of boost at around 4khz, can you turn it down to 3 please?" I checked the desk and yes, there was 6db of boost right there! Amazing lady!
