I've recently been sniffing around for lightweight cabs to go with my new Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. I wanted 4ohms to get as much as poss out of the head, but 4ohm cabs are hard to come by with enough wattage for my purposes, so I soon realised that a pair of single 8ohm cabs was the way to go-I'm currently buying a pair of custom Ashdown ABM 112's with Celestion Neo's in them. Looking forward to giving them a go, and to easier rig handling!
I read in an interview that JJ reckons no other punk bass player could touch him.
I've read the same interview-not sure he was being entirely serious there.
If you count the Jam as punk, then Bruce Foxton could.
Which IMHO they weren't-but then I'm not really sure the Stranglers were either. Foxton is an excellent player, though. -
JJ was a bit of a Prima Donna...and not a very nice person when the mood took him.
He could be a bit of a knob, I know, in his younger days. Calmed down a lot nowadays, and generally regarded as a decent bloke by most who've met him that I've read about. Couldn't have been nicer when I met him-which I hate to keep banging on about, but it meant a lot to me. -

All right me buckos, need to claw back a few quid, so my faithful Trace combo is for sale. Made in 1998, post-Gibson but a pre-Gibson design I believe. Green carpet covering, virtually unmarked. Bought from Eude from this very forum about 18 months or so ago, and a faithful servant it's been. 300watts, 7-band EQ, built-in compressor, pre-shape, balanced DI. I usually use it with a Hartke 4x10 (seen in the pic, not currently for sale) to get the full 300 watts. 200 watts through onboard speaker. Gives a classic Trace sound, especially with my Precision-I have had compliments! Gigged with it a dozen or so times, never had it much above a quarter-easily loud enough for any pub gig, and also used through PA for an outdoor bike rally with no problems whatsoever. For a 300watt combo I find it quite compact and manageable, although opinions on that vary of course-certainly way lighter (and louder) than the Ashdown Mag 300 4x10 it replaced. Looking for £150 plus shipping-it cost me about £36 to ship it from Scotland to me down in Cornwall via APC Overnight-I expect that's gone up a bit by now, but gives an idea anyway. Would consider crossing the River into England to meet up somewhere within reason for petrol money also. Armstrong Whitworth Whitley not included!
Fair enough mate, it was a good deal price wise, and a stop gap. Im used to a Status Kingbass..so its feels big...but i was strangely taken by it. Lets see what its like live!
Sorry Matt, was probably a tad excessive in my condemnation there-wasn't meaning to slag your bass-if it suits you that's all that matters. They don't do it for me, but vive la difference, eh?

I don't care how great it sounds-I still think it's one of the most hideous things ever to have four (or five, or for that matter any amount of) strings. The body looks like a bog seat and the headstock looks like Peppa Pig (those with kids will understand). Apologies to Bongo lovers-but then us Precision lovers have to take enough insults!
and some bass lines were really influential - eg, Jah Wobble's Public Image intro, Damned's Love Song intro, Clash's London Calling intro, Skids Into the valley intro etc etc - all fabulous bits of bass
Even I wouldn't say single-handed, and he's been my favourite bass player for 30 years-but he was certainly right up there at the forefront. I doubt he'd be too bothered about a Fender sig model now-he loves his Shukers, and he was very happy about the fact that he was able to support a home-grown Luthier when I met him last year. -
Also can't go wrong with Ibanez.

Just bought a Peavey Microbass from Andy. Excellent condition as described, arrived like lightning, terrific job of packing. Very decent to deal with too. Can't recommend highly enough.

Probably only my Westone Concord I, my first bass. Otherwise I'm beginning to be of the opinion that a bass as far as I'm concerned is a tool to do a job with. I had a chance to play a Fodera Monarch a couple of weeks ago-absolutely gorgeous bass, but I couldn't see me digging into it with a pick the way I do with my Precisions. It made me think about my attitude to my basses. I love them, and I don't deliberately mistreat them, but I don't see any point in babying them either. If they get dinged in the course of things, well, no big deal. If push came to shove, particularly if I wasn't gigging any more, I don't think I'd hang on to them for long. As long as I'm playing live and have a use for them, I wouldn't part with them, but if not, there's a lot of money tied up in them I'd probably want to try and at least partially recoup. The Westone, on the other hand, has stayed with me, and it isn't worth much anyway, so there's no point flogging it!
I was going to say Cliff Williams! Always one to ensure what he does whats necessary and doesn't conflict with the guitars. Check out Gimme A Bullet on "Powerage" he doesn't always pump out the 8ths.......But he is always perfectly timed. People think AC/DC play simple things; they do, but they do it WELL. If you can get through playing along to all of the Back in Black album, then you are on your way to being a good bass player.
We used to do a couple of AC/DC songs, and they are nowhere near as easy to play as you might think. Meanwhile my vote goes to the Chameleons, Mark Burgess on bass and lead vocals. Hugely underrated.

I've just dug out my copy of Middle Class Revolt by the Fall. Much enjoyment. -
I think they're better looking than your normal Stingray, which I have never liked. Still wouldn't buy one.

I just got one of these, an Ibanez LU20. I tried to get a Korg Pitchblack, but my local shop and the online retailer I tried couldn't get one until February. I got fed up waiting, went to another local shop and got this. Only tried it at home so far, but seems pretty good on first go. Metal body, plastic pedal, seems quite tough. True bypass, easy to use. None of the fancy selectable displays like the Korg, doesn't look as cool, but does the job. Only downside is that it isn't the same shape as your average pedal, so probably wouldn't fit in an effects rack, but I don't have one so I'm not bothered. Gets excellent reviews on Harmony Central. Cost me £42.

Is there a good reason for only using a manufacturer's own AC power supply with an appliance? Apart from, as I suspect, that they don't want you to buy somebody else's? I've just got a new stompbox tuner (Ibanez LU20-wanted a Korg Pitchblack but couldn't seem to get one until February-local shop had this, so decided to give it a go-not had a chance to use it yet). Instructions say you should only use an Ibanez 9volt AC supply. Why?

Bass:-Westone Concord I From:-Modern Music, Truro(still there), 1982ish Cost:-£120, now £316.80 Still got it! -
Can't think of a bass I want-except a Shuker JJ Burnel, which isn't happening. I'm beginning to think that I'm not going to be happy until I've got a head and cab instead of my combo. Current front runner is an Ashdown ABM 500 with some sort of 4X10, but that could change tomorrow. Haven't got a pot to piss in, so where it's coming from I have no idea. Who knows?
