1. Westone Concord 1, bought from Andy Pascoe's Modern Music in Truro (he's still there) about 1984. Still got it, although it doesn't leave the house these days, just sits by the sofa for unplugged noodling whilst watching TV.
2. What astounds me is that they felt it was good enough to put up on YouTube. I would kill to make sure NOBODY ever got to hear that if it was me.
3. If that's a similar weight to my GB Shuttle 6, there's really not much need for that bloody great handle. I also note there's a new Bass Attack DI pedal coming out-that's interesting.
4. I got dragged to see James Blunt at the peak of his success by my wife-didn't expect to enjoy it, but I actually thought he did a bloody good job, especially when he covered a Pixies song.
5. Male-Jackie Wilson, Matt Bellamy, Til Lindemann, Dave Grohl, Roger Daltrey, Lee Brilleaux, Leonard Cohen Female-Sia, Christina Aguilera, Roisin Murphy (Moloko), Debbie Harry.
6. There's also a very good indian restaurant dead opposite it.
7. Eifel 65-Blue Kon Kan-I beg your pardon
8. We do 'Pumping on your stereo'. Always works well, and good fun to play.
9. Nothing I'd like more than something like a Trace Elliot V8 or similar, but valve amps and their accompanying cabs weigh a bloody ton, and are generally bigger too. In my gigging situation, I have several heavy PA speakers to lug as well as my bass rig, without roadie support. I'm prepared to put up with a perceived reduction in sound quality for a rig that I can carry with the minimum of effort and which takes up much less room in the car and onstage.
10. Stranglers (for the 19th time) , Guildford, March 14th.
11.
Me too. I get all the advantages of fives, but my brain and hands just can't get used to them
Likewise. I've owned two 5's, never kept them for any length of time.
12. I come here every day, although I don't post anywhere near as much as I used to-as my level of disposable income is less, I don't have the spare cash to spend on bass gear, so I guess I don't have as much urge to get involved. As long as I'm gigging, I'll stick around, not sure I would be quite so regular here otherwise. However I am quite cyclic in my interests, perhaps bass playing will come back to the fore at some point.
13. I like the MM body shape, I like the headstock and I like the sound, but I have always hated the oval scratchplate. I was hopeful that they might do something better with these, and although I don't like the 'Precision' shape, the other one nearly, nearly does it-except for the little 'tail' where the controls are. Reminds me of a Fender Mustang, and I don't like them either. Close, for me, but no cigar.
14. I think it's sensible to have a backup which is as close as possible to your main bass, so that you're familiar with it if you have to pick it up in a hurry. Thus my backup to my Shuker JJ is my Mex Precision, which has pretty much the same neck profile. Our guitarist once tried to play a song with a guitar he didn't usually play, I still shudder at the thought.....
15. Queen Bitch, and Heroes.
16. I had a similar issue with Schallers-I just drilled out the strap buttons a bit to take the thicker screws. Nothing I did ever stopped them unscrewing though, and I gave up and went for Grolsch washers, which have never let me down.
17. Every year for a long time now the Killers have released a charity Xmas single which never seems to get much attention. Some have been fairly unimpressive, last year's 'Joel the lump of coal' was utterly ludicrous, but this one, 'A great big sled' is my favourite Xmas song ever. This year's effort is pretty damn good too. Honourable mention for Greg Lake, Chris Rea's 'Driving home for Xmas', and although it's been played to death, 'Fairytale of New York' for its total lack of the usual Xmas schmaltz. Worst for me is probably Elton John's effort. http://youtu.be/w-nse84xIpE
18. Continuing the Stranglers theme, I'll get it in before someone else does-Peaches. http://youtu.be/NuT5KUA7iaY
19. If she turns out another album of 'Someone like you's' and 'Hello's', I think people will start getting bored of her. I love some of her stuff (Rolling in the deep), but all the failed-relationship big ballads are starting to sound a bit samey to me. Huge respect to her though, and nice to see a Brit having such massive success.
20. I've seen Motorhead twice, once in the mid-80's at the Cornwall Coliseum, again at Eden this year. On both occasions it was chest-thudding drums, and the rest an indistinct mess. A shame as I have great respect for Lemmy. The Pogues, also at the Coliseum, early 90's I think-Shane McGowan utterly hammered and unintelligible, and not onstage for two thirds of the gig. Even my beloved Stranglers, 96 Tears tour at Torbay leisure centre in 1990, shortly before Hugh Cornwell left. Terrible sound, the band looked bored and lacklustre, and neither the horns or John Ellis' extra guitar did anything to improve matters. I didn't see them again for 16 years, with the new Baz Warne line-up, and I'm back to the huge fan I was in my youth. I saw the Sisters of Mercy four times with the original line-up, and with the exception of the York festival (the Sisters in daylight was never going to work) they were jaw-dropping. I saw Ellery Bop on that Killing Joke tour! I don't remember them being that loud. They apparently threatened to kill the Jesus and Mary Chain, whom I saw at a tiny club in Plymouth on their first tour-well I say I saw them, in fact all you could see was a wall of bouncers shoving people off the stage for the 20 minutes they were on. I remember they had Kay Sound Fashion combo's! Saw them again several years later on the Rollercoaster tour at Plymouth Pavilions, and they were incredible!
21. I've still got my Pixies tour shirt from 1990, bought at Exeter uni a few months after seeing them at Reading. Wore it to see them at the Eden project last year.
22. I'm pleased to say I have seen a fair few of the bands previously mentioned (mostly at the now-flattened Cornwall Coliseum, which being on my doorstep was a regular haunt of me and my mates). To my shame, I preferred to go to karate practice rather than see the Clash (with Theatre of Hate supporting). I also missed seeing the Three Johns in a tiny club (Ziggy's) in Plymouth. I was booked to see REM on the tour they cancelled because of Bill Berry's brain haemorrhage, although I did get to see them after he left. Led Zep, I guess, and I'd have liked to see Frank Zappa too.
23. African and White-China Crisis Shadow of love-The Damned That's the way love is-Ten city
24. More than I thought! Korg Pitchblack is my main tuner, another Korg I bought when I first started playing again, a cheapo effort I got with a guitar at a car boot, and a clip-on on my acoustic guitar. I swear by the Pitchblack, great bit of kit.
25.
I saw an AC/DC tribute, but the name escapes me. Anyway they kicked of with the early stuff with Bon Scott, and returned after a quick break with a different singer doing Brian Johnson stuff. They wete good. I'll also second Limehouse Lizzy.
That sounds like Live Wire, who are bloody good. I'll third Limehouse Lizzy.
