All the reviews I've seen of that product could be called "cautionary tales".

Do I need a new bass? [flowchart]
The Dark Lord replied to Cantdosleepy's topic in General Discussion
Word. -
Depends. If you are a regular performer in a pub/club band like me, I'd say you need 3 basses. One to play with - one to have as a backup bass (string breakages/electrical fault etc) - and a third bass to use when one of the other two is out of action ..... e.g. when it's with the guitar tech. Might be a handy idea to have a drop D machine head on the backup bass for flexibility. I'm ignoring when things get more complicated depending on the type of music you play - when you might need a fretless, five string etc.

This is a work of genius. ....... it may be that it is not scientifically possible to look any cooler than this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s0cn40Gwvw

Smallest giggable bass combo/cab?
The Dark Lord replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I have just bought an AER amp one. It sounds great and loud for such a small thing. My new favourite amp!
Yup. I have had one of these for just short of a year. I gigged with it Saturday just gone. No DI - just the amp in our three piece up against a drummer and a guy with a 40W Fender Hot Rod (which according to Guitar Magazine, kicks out more decibels that a Marshall 100W half stack). No problem. Bass is quite high in the mix in the gig recording. I luuuuurve it. Massive quality of build and sound. Tiny as well, so takes up very little space in the house or car. -
Mods please remove, longer available.

We're adding four Christmas songs to our set over the festive period - all done in a sorta rocky punk-like way. We've decided upon: Band Aid - Do They Know it's Christmas Rocking Around the Christmas Tree In sorta this style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92GEcH2wt9M All I want for Christmas is You - In a sort of Love Actually type way and, of course, ........Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody Anyone else doing this ..... and what's on yer list of songs.
Come on. I dare you. After all it's essentially a 4-string bass. What are you afraid of?
Hey Big Red. What I meant to say was - "I'm done with this topic". I'm happy if you like such instruments. Play away 'till your heart's content. I'm sure you wouldn't like some of my stuff - but that's okay. I don't want to see, play or hear an 8-string bass. To me, anything over 4 strings is uneccessary and anything over 5 is extremely dodgy. I'm not really bothered whether Mr After He Was Famous Jones plays one or not or if Mr Pearl Jam was once seen with one. Good for them. Me, afraid of anything? Yeah right.

I play in a three piece, but some pubs don't want/can't accommodate a drummer. So we went into a studio over a period of time and recorded all of his drum tracks and play along to them when they won't let us use the drummer. Quite unusual but always goes down well. That's backing tracks I suppose. We did try playing with acoustics once, but we didn't like it.
No. The 8-string bass that you posted a photo of. I'm assuming you picked that one because you knew it was mine. (of course you did)
The Dark Lord has spoken. Nothing else needs to be said.
So would you like a go? I'm willing to lend it to you...
Wot? The girl with the harp? Yes please.
Do you even know what I'm talking about?
No. I'm as thick as two planks ..... I have no idea what you are talking about. In the meantime, here's a pic of another bass mandolin for self-important people. Sorry if it's not in black.

Mind you, she does look fantastic.
So would you try an 8-string bass with 4 2-string octave courses?
No. This is what you'll look like if you get one of those.
-
Well - go get one. Marshall make these: http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/files/Lemmy%20hbk%20Eng.pdf They are a custom build option. Marshall don't keep 'em in stock. They will make yours when you place your order, so there will be a lead time. I was quote about £1,400 for one a while back by my local Marshall stockist.
Phew....Near miss there! I won't mention the weird looking one one the left.
Yep. Don't worry, it's already been replaced.
What would your definition of a 12-string guitar be? And what is your definition of a 6-string bass?
12-string guitars are used to give a sort of atmospheric ring to some pop/folk tunes. I'm not really keen on them as I think, nowadays, you can get a suitable sound out of a normal 6 string acoustic. To me, 12 string electrics are silly. I don't really see that a 5 string is wholly necessary and I think, I you want to play a 6 string bass, then you seriously ought to consider being a guitarist. Not my cup of tea either, but I know that a lot of people swear by them - and they possibly play styles of music that they will argue require those devices. On the other hand, that "thing" (to me personally) has no rationale other than for weird music which is best played by oneself in a room all alone. I mean, it's not even black!
Y'know, there really ain't nothin worth doin that you can't do with one of these beauties.
My sincere apologies for the use of a non-black pickguard on one of these basses. One is on order and will be fitted soon.
Yes it is.
Nope. It's more like a mandolin or a harp.
