Tony Butler Signature Bass - Vintage V4MTB
The Dark Lord replied to TransistorBassMan's topic in Bass Guitars
Tony Butler is good though. -
In my opinion, there are no better cabs, both in build AND sound quality than the TC Electronic range. Owned by the same company who own Tannoy - so they should know a thing or to. Very light too. They are relatively expensive, but if you did say you wanted the best! Precision vs Jazz vs Warwick vs other Precision
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't know if I made it clear. In both clips, the Precisions were "full bore" - full volume and tone on all available pickups. The Jazz and the Warwick , in both clips, we're full tone, full neck pickup volume and half bridge pickup volume. That's just the way I like the sound. I sometimes roll the tone back on my basses for some songs ..... but not in these clips. The Warwick plays and feels great, but I'm not 100% sold on the sound. It gets better IMHO when the lower mids are rolled off on the amp. I had a Warwick Fortress One before, with P/J pickups. Much better. I like the Older Warwicks. I might alter the pickups on this one or may switch to an older P/J Warwick again. My take on all of this is that I will remain a pick player, as I like the sound and vibe. Bass wise, to me, the White P is the best pick bass, followed closely by the P/J ( for songs where I want a more aggressive sound). The Jazz and Warwick are not far behind. For finger playing, I think the Jazz has it, with the Warwick and White P not far behind. To me, the P/J doesn't cut it with fingers Mind you, the P/J has been rewired as a stereo bass which makes it a great live performer ...... but that's another topic. -

Precision vs Jazz vs Warwick vs other Precision
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
Okay. Here are the same four basses again, in the same order. This time through my TC Electronic gear (RH450, RS210 and RS112). All of the basses have the same settings as in the last video and all of the basses have the same amp settings ....... except the Warwick which has lower output pickups so the gain and volume have been dialed up on the amp, plus I have removed some of the mids from the Warwick. Please forgive me finger style playing and my timing ..... this is a sound test, not a demonstration of my ropey playing. http://youtu.be/_Wl56dqSmUc My initial impressions are that the Vintage White Precision still sounds great, the P/J maple Precision is not as suited to fingerstyle ........ but the Jazz sounds far better with fingers. The Warwick also sounds better with fingers but still doesn't match the Fenders IMHO. To be fair, the P/J and MM style Warwicks are better. It's also fair to say that an accomplished finger style player would no doubt squeeze a better sound out - but hey, at least I had a go. -
....... Never been a Warwick fan though.........
The Warwick is very light and very easy to play. The neck is very slim, but also feels great. I'm not convinced by the Vintage MEC pickups. They are VERY low output and I don't like the sound compared to the Fenders ........ it's not a bad sound, just a different one. I might get the pickups rewound to make them hotter. The Warwick was one of those impulse buys. Cost very little from this forum from a guy just down the road. An amazing price I just couldn't turn down. -
...... I noticed the up/downstrokes thing, too - were you aware you were doing that, or do the Jazz and the Warwick bring that out unconsciously?.......
It wasn't a conscious thing. The whole video took a bit of time and I was possibly getting tired by then. Or, maybe the Precisions make me play differently. Both Precisions are 1999 - with serial numbers so similar, that they were probably made in the same batch. A visual inspection shows them to be virtually identical in dimension everywhere. In particular, the necks are BIG. That's certainly the case compared to the much thinner one on the 2010 Jazz and the even thinner one on the Warwick. Maybe the physical dimensions led me to play them differently? I dunno. As I said, I didn't think I had until someone mentioned from the video. -

Tell you what though ..... when I DO play with fingers, which is not very often and I'm not a great finger style player, the bass does sound quite different. There's (maybe) a wee bit more expression to it and it will probably highlight the differences between the basses a wee bit more. If I get time, later, I'll see if I can add another clip with all the basses played fingerstyle. You do get way less volume with fingers than a pick ..... but I'll give it a bash. -
-5 for all of them. That pick does nothing for me.
I really don't understand these people who condemn pick players. I have never seen one of us pick players moaning saying "that's rubbish, he's using his fingers". In my view, it's all bass playing - each to his own. If that's what a person wants to do - that's fine. This is a post about comparative bass sounds. Not about whether someone should use a pick or not. Okay, so let's call it a comparison using a pick. I don't think it is helpful or constructive to other bass players to have comments like yours in a post like this. This is the kind of thing that ruins good forums like this. We're supposed to be helping each other with information - which I think I am doing here. If you MUST be negative, can you please go away and "troll" on someone else's post. There are plenty of pick vs fingers vs slap topics on here for you to express your opinion. -
If there is no input gain level knob on the amp, then use the bass volume knob. Do this. Turn the amp volume knob up all the way, then plug in the bass with the volume knob(s) turned all the way down. Then, gradually turn the volume knobs on the amp up until it gets to the "farting thing", then turn the volume knob(s) down just down below that level. There you go.

NOTE: The original video is a pick playing comparison - for a finger style comparison, see page 2 of this topic Played about with my basses today and tried to figure out how different they all sound. Also gave me the chance to fiddle with the settings on my wonderful AER Amp One combo. My own conclusions in a minute, but here's the video I took. I'm really happy with the sound of the Vintage White Precision (USA Standard 1999). It has THAT P Bass tone. The Hot Rodded P/J (USA 1999) that I have has a more aggressive and more powerful tone - but still distinctly Precision, Could be the replacement Seymour Duncan SJP1 and SPB1 pickups. The Jazz (USA Standard 2010) has a slightly less aggressive sound than the Vintage White, has a bit of that J Bass growl and possibly less bottom end than the Precisions. However, they sound close enough that I guess, in the mix with guitars, drums and vocals when gigging, I'd be surprised if anyone could really tell the difference live. The Warwick is completely different. Lighter, thinner neck and "thumpier" bottom end on the E string - but get's a bit "middley". I can dial that out using a preset on my RH450 when gigging. The AER combo is to die for. Flexible, great sound and loud as hell.
-
Usually means you are maxing out the input gain. Are you using an effects pedal in front of it? Or are you using an active bass or some other bass with a very high output? Other than that, Deepbass5's comments above about a small amp's general capabilities are relevant.
-
Sounds proper through the TC RS112 - sounds odd through the Mark Bass thing. Listen to the sound just after the changeover at 1.13 or so. Loads of middley sound starts to appear. Horrible. That's a TC Electronic cab win !
-
If you wanna have that signature clank and rumble (with a hint of grand piano) P bass sound, you gotta use rounds ...... be proud of the swish sound.
-
Mine had a drop lever. You could adjust the note it dropped to.

I luuuuurve Trace Elliot gear. Great old skl sound - bit heavy to carry for my liking though
Altered for accuracy
That's a bit flippant and unfair One of my favourite bass players uses one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPer4MQEUo0 I guess she probably w*nks then? Hope so. I believe it's used to stop unwanted string ringing when playing busy slap or lead style bass
-
I had one of these a while back - the 4 string version. Had a great sound and was kinda cool, but I couldn't really get on with the playing of it. As there is no headstock, the whole fretboard appears to have moved to the left. Consequently, I found it difficult to swap from playing a Fender to the Hohner in a set Here's a video of me playing a small clip (apologies for the timing .... and the camera picking up the acoustic plucking too). From memory, this was played clean through a Cornford Harlequin all valve 1x12 guitar combo for this vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaEs09R6l4Q

Dipping my toe in the upright bass pond?
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Alas, my loaner uright bass is due to go back to the store this weekend. And my conclusion? ............ Upright is not for me. It has been a really cool and groovy thang. EVERYBODY who has come into my house has been drawn to it, immediately after they see it with comments like "wow!" It has been a lot of fun, but sonically, it just doesn't do it for me. I have managed to replicate a lot of the basslines that I normally play on it - and not just in a simplified manner. I did get some tips from a fellow basschatter too. But it's not for me. I guess the clank and rumble of a good old Precision is too deply ingrained in me. The cool thang goes back tomorrow - the rest of my living room furniture will miss it - but hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
