"Go on, - play me something"......
The Dark Lord replied to Gazza 2905's topic in General Discussion
I play the keyboard part of Golden Brown on the condition that they sing. Goes down a treat if everyone has had a few. -
A regular performing bassist needs at least three basses. One to play and one as a backup. A backup is mainly needed to guard against a broken string. You can't keep your audience waiting while you restring ........ and besides, one new string in between three old ones wouldn't sound great. Just use the backup bass and restring 'em all when you get home. Also, if you ever need to have one of your basses repaired at a shop, then you'll need to bring the third bass into action. That's not considering the bassists who play different basses to get different sounds ........ fretless etc.

Do You Think they will get Them ?!?
The Dark Lord replied to Geddys nose's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It says Chesterfield but also Riga in Latvia. The price is suspiciously good. I would be hesitant. -
Does anyone use the foot controller for the TC Electronic RH450? If so, is it any good .... and would you recommend it?

Why are there so many copies of Fender basses?
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
This has been very interesting. I asked the question and I have learned some stuff from this thread. It appears that “super Js and Ps” which are de facto design replicas of Fenders are actually okay with the BC community by-and-large. Probably down to the fact that they are the developments of the Fender basses that Fender failed to do – and they are really good. At least I suppose they must be as they can often command a significant premium. And also, it appears that the consensus is that Leo got it so spot on from the off, that others have found it difficult to improve or even deviate on the basis of the formula. Hats off to Rickenbacker, Ned Steinberger, Gibson, Music Man and the very short list of others who have created their own designs – but to be honest, they are all niche sellers by comparison. Anyone trying to make a new design has their work cut out to try to carve one of those niches. So nobody really bothers. It’s a bit of a shame – as all markets need innovators . Personally, I guess the answer for me will be to actually buy one and play it for a while and see what I think. I’d have to go for one without one of the trademark pickguards though, as I couldn’t go that far. I should ask for recommendations, but that’s another thread for another day. -
Yeah, you're right. Roger Sadowsky, Sheldon Dingwall, Dan Lakin all clearly have no pride in the instruments they produce. Thank you for showing me the light, mercuryl, thank you for removing the covers from over my eyes. You truly have changed my life. I am so stunned I need to go for a lie down.
I was referring, "Mr Hot under the Collar", to the fact that I can't be missing the point of my own post. Which you seemed to miss. - That I feel that it shows a lack of imagination to copy other people's designs. Am I right in saying that your profile pic/words suggest that you are a moderator? If that's the case then I'm surprised you're getting so emotional (amd a bit rude) over a post discussion. Some people ! -
[ Yes there is. It's called giving the public what they want. The guys making Lace, Barker and Gus probably all have day jobs and I bet you've never heard of them. The people you are slagging off are top craftsmen and very successful businessmen for a reason.
Someone is getting all hot and bothered? "Slagging off" ? I am just pointing out that they are showing a lack of imagination - whether they are top craftsmen or not. There is absolutely no excuse for copying a scratchplate exactly - let alone all of the other bits. Make your own fresh design ...... or if you can't, and you're skills are in woodcraft, then team up with proper designer who can do that with you. I just wouldn't feel comfortable standing there playing a copied design. However much "better" it is than the original. -
And there are the words of someone totally missing the point.
Yeah. You more like. How can I be missing the point of my own thread? There is no excuse, for example, for using an identical scratchplate to the fender brand, with pickups that are identical looking. Ric 4001s, 4003s etc are a good example of individual thinking. It's just so sad that these so called quality makers can't go the extra mile and stop copying someone else's designs. They could do all these advances in design, quality control, features etc without exactly copying someone elses designs. -
Rattling open string and odd harmonic sound?
The Dark Lord replied to iBudd's topic in Repairs and Technical
Check out this video. Zoom through to about 3 min 38 secs. He gives some good info about how A strings commonly rattle. Do what he says and it'll probably fix it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5zUc6S4QV8 -
I'm not talking cheap copies. I can sort of understand that. I mean expensive "Super Jazz" and "Super Precisions". Why would any company make a bass guitar that looks identical to a Fender bass. Take Lakland and Sadowsky for two examples. I'm sure they make GREAT quality basses, but why do they make models which look almost identical to Fenders? Where is there pride? Why would anyone buy them? Why can't they use their own shapes? I have no issue with Stingrays - as they are a development of the Fender bass by the man himself. Similarly, but to a lesser extent, I can live with G&L basses looking the way they do. Although, I've gotta say they look less of a development and more of an ape. But other so called quality manufacturers? Why do they do it - and how can they get away with it? Do they pay a licencing fee. Look at Warwick. Great basses and there own shape. Why can't others do that?

I've got one of these beauties with which I take a Precision and Jazz along to rehearsals. Brilliant quality. Tony Butler Signature Bass - Vintage V4MTB

I can't really understand why people make copies of other people's products. Even the very expensive brands. Why don't they just come up with their own designs? -
Not a bad shout - Delbertnot - you should listen to it, it's good. My choice would definitely be 'I Wish' by Stevie Wonder...........or 'The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines' by Joni Mitchell - live version........or 'Nice n Sleazy' or 'Tom Sawyer' or ....well it depends on my mood I suppose! Still: 1. Muse – 'Hysteria' 2. Rush – 'YYZ' 3. Queen – 'Another One Bites The Dust'* 4. Queen and David Bowie – 'Under Pressure'* 5. Pink Floyd – 'Money' 6. Metallica – 'Orion' 7. Michael Jackson – 'Billie Jean'* 8. Yes – 'Roundabout' 9. The Who – 'My Generation' 10. Tool – 'Schism'* * - ones I find weird!
I find it weird that you think three out of those four are weird choices. Still, no Peaches by the Stranglers in the top 20? Now that's weird.

A very nice budget indeed. I expected there to be a tree hugger telling you off for being vulgar already and that you should give money to poor people, your family and charities and stuff. There will probably be one along in a minute. I'd say that ALL basses are good. Spend heaps of time moochin around and deciding - just because you can. You couldn't go that far wrong with a USA Fender Precision or Jazz - for somewhere between £500 and £1500 and a TC Electronic RH750 and a couple of their cabs and then spend the rest of fast women and slow horses
-
Hi I'm looking for a small portable amp - to replace my Ashdown Superfly (which was itself a small and powerful thing when it came out). I have been looking at the TC Electronic stuff - but how would you rate the PF500 versus the TC Classic or TC RH450?

Warwick Thumb NT 4 1989 - WITHDRAWN - you're too late ;O)
The Dark Lord replied to Scooby's topic in Basses For Sale
For some reason, Warwicks have fallen out of failure with the bass buying public. They either don't sell or fetch very low prices. I picked up a fretless Warwick Fortress One on this site for £400 posted. It was a very high quality thing - so couldn't understand why I got it so cheap. Having said that, I didn't like it as much as my Fenders, so I sold it on relatively quickly for not much more. -
Best thing that ever happened to me in a band context. Dynamics are so much easier without some extra guitarist chugging away or noodling about to no great purpose. The gaps are the best bit now.
Indeed. Well said.
-
You'll be fine. A 3-piece of drums, bass and guitar sounds great.
-
Hmmm. When I saw "Holy Grail" as a link, I paused for a second and wondered what THE holy grail of bass would be. I decided it must be some kind of antique Fender Precision - possibly one of the first of the restyled Precisions from 1957. Then I clicked the link. Very good and all that - but not the Holy Grail.

AER Amp One - The best amp I have bought - EVAR !!
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
Is going to compete with a big rig - errr no, not really, it may appear to but if you a/b it with one then the missing stuff will become more apparent.
I agree, but make sure you dont miss the point of this thread that I started. This was never intended to be a "rig" to replace a full-size gigging set up. It was purchased for smaller gigs, parties and open mic nights. From that viewpoint, it has hit the spot BIG TIME. The big bonus is that i was completely unprepared for the sheer quality of the sound. Totally unbelievable. Another surprise is that it is much louder than I ever imagined to be. Indeed, it will be easily capable of gigging in the normal bars that I play in. But it won't be, and wasn't intended to be my main rig. I'm just about to purchase an RH750 to go with my RS210 and RS112 for that. But you gotta play one if these Amp One's. but be careful when you do, you'll be looking for that £1,000. -
AER Amp One - The best amp I have bought - EVAR !!
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've spotted something interesting. if you look back through this thread (and other threads on this site), you'll see that the people who have actually played / heard AER products are amazed and full of praise. Go look on the web and see if you can find any reviewer who says anything bad about this amp. You won't. If you can find one, go try it out. You'll be utterly amazed. At about £1K - it an absolute bargain.
