AER Amp One - The best amp I have bought - EVAR !!
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
You guys know what your talking about. What do you think is the most transparent amp? I'm looking at getting a new rig in the not to distant future, what would you guys recomend?
Oi !!! Thread hijacker !! -
Geddy necks are very thin. Thinner than your usual Jazz neck. If you're used to a Precision, for example, you might not like it.
Must be a quiet band. I accept that it does what you need but a 10" speaker can only do so much, IME.
Nope. You wouldn't believe it until you hear it. In full volume rehearsals for my 2 x guitar, plus drums and separate singer band .... I was asked to turn it down a little. It's something to do with how the speaker moves in the box. I didn't pay top dollar to have a product which can be compared to the other ordinary, cheaper products. And it can't. -

I would've added a picture when I started the thread - if it wasn't so difficult to figure out on here. But anyway, here it is. It's tiny (and all the more brilliant for that). -
There is a hole in my Jazz bass too. It's a 2010 USA Standard. Here's a pic when I was changing the oem guard to a new black one. Funny enough, I didn't notice the hole.

Here's my "mini rig". Unbelievable sound quality, loud enough for a medium-sized gig. Tiny.
Here's my tiny rig, just arrived today...
I have one of these 1x12 TC cabs. They are awesome.
Personally, I'd go for a Markbass head.
Has to be a TC. I won't be buying a Markbass. Have played a few and have never liked the sound. They also look strange. Gonna spend the weekend demoing TCs in a shop if I can.

I have two TC Electronic cabs - the RS210 and the RS112. The are expensive(ish) but really high quality stuff. Build quality is 1st class. I love 'em. I presently use an Ashdown Superfly through them for normal-sized gigs. I'm planning to buy a TC Electronic Rebelhead to go with the cabs. Which one would you advise? 450, 750, Staccato or Classic? Will I be okay using the 750 through that pair of cabs? Or should I limit myself to the 450? Is there any benefit to the Staccato over the 450. I'm after a punchy rock sound mostly pick-played - using a Fender USA Precision on full-bore. Don't do slap. Price is not an issue.

Smaller, less volume, good tone on the cheap - Advice needed
The Dark Lord replied to razze06's topic in Amps and Cabs
the RH450 is well known as a super heavy head!
Really? I thought it was a tiny but quite powerful thing? Are you confusing it with the BH500 ? -
you've made 3 mistakes with this 1: I would of put a Badass II on it instead of the bridge you've chosen 2: I would of had the jack input mounted on the pickguard 3: I wouldn't of had a tone control so it would of just been 2 volumes and the jack input on the plate Apart from that, I want it haha *edit* make that 4, NO RELICING! Leave it as it is. It's so gorgeous like it is.
If it's the bass you always wanted, designed by you from the ground up ......... then you have made no mistakes !

Never heard of 'em - but it looks way cool

Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers' bassist's gear / sound
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
His previous bassman, Steve Lawrence used a Burns, and he had a cracking tone - especially on the 'Dirty Dozen' album.
Yeah. I have never seen a clip of Steve Lawrence, but I have heard him play on No More Heroes .... on Hugh's Live and Kicking album. No idea what gear he was using on that - but he sounds great. In fact, that is my all-time fave version of No More Heroes. -
I know a load of bass players on here are fans of The Stranglers and Jean Jacques Burnel's bass sound. Me, I still love 'em, but I'm also very keen on the material being produced by ex guitarist/frontman Hugh Cornwell. He's been playing with a bassist lately called Steve Fishman - previously with Paul McCartney. My question is this. He has a wicked bass sound. Really deep and rumbly using a P bass, but I'm not sure if it is a Fender? It sounds vaguely Jazz bass like. Also, do you know what amp and cabbage he uses? Check 'em out at this link - skip straight to 28 mins 23 secs to see what I mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsv5K94wOO8

Valve amps with a WOW factor.
The Dark Lord replied to William James Easton's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you are looking for a valve amp with the wow factor. There can be only one. http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/files/Lemmy%20hbk%20Eng.pdf I believe these are still available as a special build order. -
Ashdown Little Bastard 550 - it's here!
The Dark Lord replied to franzbassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
then all some guys do is say 'I HATE that logo' or 'that guys jacket sleeves are too long'!
Come on phatbass, you are missing my point - and that expressed by others. How can we as consumers take a company / brand seriously when a senior figure within the company represents the product so poorly? If that video shows the type of quality effort that they put into their marketing and presentation (a crucial element of any company), then we should expect that they have the same lack of quality and and attention to detail in their production process. Indeed, I echo the observation that the knobs and buttons on that amp are labelled poorly. Compare this video from TC Electronic. Done on the same kinda basis - on the fly at a show - and you will see the additional forethought and planning that has gone into it. Much more useful information. Higher quality individual promoting their products. And that guy's first languange isn't even English. You also wanna look at TC Electronic's product videos (an example below). Come on Ashdown. Up your game. http://www.youtube.com/user/tcelectronic#p/u/0/-quHmuX6Jwg -

Why are the sleeves on his jacket so long? Has he decided to wear someone elses jacket for the video? It's not like it looks that smart. +1 on the TC Electronics guy. -
Out of interest, did you investigate the Ibanez Promethean at all?
the Promethean 1x10 looked an option. Clever package. I didn't see one in the flesh, but I saw the fretspot.com amp shootout on youtube with the Genz Benz 6.0, the Promethean and the RH450. The Promethean seemed to come off 3rd best in that ..... and I was looking for the best of the best. -
Ashdown Little Bastard 550 - it's here!
The Dark Lord replied to franzbassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm not really sure that I would want the word "Bastard" written on my amp. What were the people at Ashdown thinking when they came up with that one? It's similar and just as classy as that fool at French Connection who came up with a branding idea. -
AER Amp One - The best amp I have bought - EVAR !!
The Dark Lord replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yep. I understood that was a gamble, but I saw that there was an instant used market for them and the plaudits were SO GOOD from existing users. So I figured it was worth sticking my head above the parapet. Also, to be fair, I have played through an AER acoustic amp before and couldn't believe how good that was, so I had some experience of the brand. -
Okay, so I've purchased a new AER Amp One bass combo. This is a 200 watt solid state amp with a 1x10 speaker and no tweeter. It is incredibly small. AND, it honestly is the best bass amplifier I have ever bought, used or heard - anywhere. I could go on for ages about this, but it is literally astonishing. I needed a small combo to take to weekly rehearsals as the backline at rehearsal studios is of variable quality and I have lost too much time in rehearsals trying to get a good sound. Also, I do quite a few small gigs, parties and open mic nights - and all too often there is no bass amp at such events. So I wanted something light, small and easy to put in the car. I also wanted enough power to be heard along with my band of 2 x guitars, a drummer and a singer. There were lots of runners and riders, and I nearly opted for a small class D head with a separate 1 x 12 cab. I tried a little Phil Jones thing, but it didn't have the volume. I tried a Mesa Walkabout Scout. It was great, loud and high quality. Then I kept coming across people who talked about the AER Amp One online. EVERYBODY who had one of these seemed to rave about them. Yeah, they're pricey (about £1,000), but how much do you value your back? So, I ordered one without hearing it from a local shop. It turned up two days later just in time for rehearsal ..... and whadya know? It's unbelievable. It is easily loud enough to play pub gigs with. It is tiny. I mean, you wouldn't believe how tiny. It's also surprisingly heavy for its size, but it's not awkward to carry, so that's okay. That's only part of the story though. The actual sound is real, real high quality. Makes my Precision sound like a Precision and my Jazz sound like a Jazz. There's an amazing number of knobs and buttons to shape and colour the sound - which give lots of variation, without getting rid of the main characteristic of the actual bass guitar. I heard Mark Bass kit did that, but believe me, this is a quality of sound in an entirely different universe. There is also every imaginable feature on the amp - in terms of ins and outs etc. Interestingly, there isn't an extension speaker out. Probably because you don't need it - there isn't any way you could improve on the sound by attaching anything to it. The instructions that come with the amp are comedic though. They're a bit like those badly translated flat-pack instructions you get. No help at all - but that's a minor point. I tried it at rehearsal and turned every knob and pressed every button every which way. I could only get good sounds out of it. Also, the guitarists and drummer asked me to "turn it down a little". They were also mightily impressed with the sound quality. So, it has ticked EVERY box. It's exactly what I was after. It'll handle anything up to medium-sized pub gigs. I love it and I'm even considering buying a second unit for larger gigs. Why not?

Fender Road Worn 50's Precision mini review (with pics)
The Dark Lord replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
I played one of these in MB Music in Bognor Regis today. I liked it a lot. Great sound. The neck was very different to my two 1999 USA P basses. It was thinner and wider. Good P Bass burble of a sound.
