I don't get this, really. I have a mini stack which is about 75cms thereabouts inc amp. I never have any problem hearing it and the band has a full and powerful sound, IMO. It strikes me that if you can't really hear it standing virtually on top of the set-up..it isn't going to project very well out there 20 mtrs back. If you have loaded the bass at that point, it seems to me that this could be why a lot of unsupported bass sounds, sound flabby in smaller rooms. If you have to have it at ear level, this seems to be the wrong cab for you. You might like the sound at the point you are hearing it, and you might like the sound, full stop, but I would seriously wonder who else is getting any decent benefit..??
I kinda agree in principle about that, but some places have strange acoustics, and to add limited space etc can make things sound weird, but it could be the bass
If there wasn't a market for tribute bands, they wouldn't exist. Punters like them - so live with it. Perhaps we should be asking ourselves is why they're popular. IMO, it's down to two things: * Past a certain age - maybe 25 yrs old - people begin to prefer familiarity over originality. It's about emotional security and no bad thing in itself. * The tribute band proposition (generally) implies an unchallenging evening of popular, successful songs, delivered with competence and accuracy. The 'tribute' label is a convenient sh*t-filter for certain audiences. Most punters simply want a background soundtrack while they have a laugh and a few beers. The band is simply a utility. They don't want to be 'challenged'. When I go to Tesco, I want the bread to be in the usual place. I don't want the manager to 'challenge' me and put it somewhere 'original', like next to the ice cream. Trib band audiences have made their preferences entirely clear. If we don't want their custom, that's our choice, but let's not bitch about 'reducing opportunities for originals bands' when it's clear that trib band audiences wouldn't turn up anyway.
+10000000000000000000

on my 2x10 - I try it on the ground first.. on a very few occasions, I take it off the ground - if It doesn't need to be loud and might be a touch boomy. But if you're further away from the cab you cab hear it better.. I understand that some take it off the ground to get it closer to the ear, but you lose the bottom end with my 2x10 and 1x15... On the floor!!.. 15's are made for the ground and I put the 2x10 on top and that's for the big big gigs

I think the answer to the question in the first instance is... you have two choices: do the gig or not and if so try and enjoy it :-)
There's nothing stupid about my remark, and you calling it stupid is offensive. Maybe we should ban you from basschat so my boss doens't get offended when he reads your posts over my shoulder?
You have just proved my point. Off to another more interesting thread..
Browsing a bass website would get most people in trouble at work. Get back to work and do what you're paid to do, not post on basschat.
By a frankly stupid remark like that, it tells me you haven't read the thread properly and have missed the point and your response doesn't actually hold a as valid point.. Read the whole thread!!

This is my old bass and it's lovely.. just a bit more info on it.. The upgrades were professionally done by Machinehead music in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.. The guys up there know their stuff.. If I had the funds, I'd buy it back.. Damn you tax returns :-( This is a steal.. Also Just to add.. the volume control on the bass is independent on each pickup, so you can actually have full power on both pick ups
hilarous.....
I like Muse, but I think people have their right of opinion. Funny though, everyone who I have spoken to who have seen them, whether they bought ticket last minute off a mate or just went with crowd of mate said they do great stadium show.. So I guess some of the gear does help.. Alot of people buy distortion pedal and tone benders etc to emulate his sound... I think Chris really doesn't care.. He's privileged to earn sh*t of cash doing what he loves.. of course he's gonna buy loads of gear and play it on the tours.. does it all make that much difference on a big stage... nah.. but it's a great life :-) Be honest we'd all do the same and if not.. you're lying. Just the BC'esr on this site have enough gear to buy a half a flat :-)

I like the fact he used to change the sounds between songs and parts himself on his pedalboard.. now his tech just does it... A true bassist doesn't understand pedals anyway :-P
You mean you can't?! I use a duracell in my passive precision... added growl and smoothness
I just hold the duracell next to my bass and the electric current.. increases the bass.. ;-)

When I bought my first bass, I'd been borrowing basses for years... The 1st bass I bought was based on how it felt. I could play better with bass that felt right than a bass that was sounded great, but I couldn't get around the fretboard or body.. As I've got older, I trained my body to deal with different basses that don't feel as good but sound great... When I'm buying a bass it needs to feel good, but tone is very i'mportant, so in rush to get a good bass it needs to feel good and sound great.. on a gig.. depends.. If I have time get used to that bass, I go for tone.. but if I'm depping and playing 40 songs I've played once, i'll play much better on my bass that feels good and I'll just eq the bass.. The band will be happier if I'm playing the right notes well over bass tone, which no-one really hears as much as we'd like
I'm surprised it took this long for anyone to mention the swiss army LS-2. You can pick them up used for about £40 usually, they are useful for tonnes of stuff, anywhere you can imagine needing an A/B loop/switch or a simple 2-channel mixer.
+1 Couldn't believe it either... Funny I just sold one for £20.. It was batter from the previous owner, but it worked with no noise. Made like bricks!!

I currently have two basses. I only take a spare if i'm miles away from home on function (miles away from home).. It's much quicker to change bass if something went wrong than a string during a set... there's no time then I usually take one for my gigs in London and set of strings and a screwdriver etc. Both basses are passive, so less can go wrong really.. I guess As a rule: Rock/pop/all-rounder/pucnhy groovey - Jazz Roadworn Acoustic style, Groove, soul, some pop, Very heavy rock - Jazz Aerodyne with TruBass strings (flats) The fact I'm using the Roadworn is more based on the fact I'm doing more gigs that need that sound.. In the next few months the Aeordyne will be used more.. In the studio, I carry both.. I choose the bass based on the sound I need for the gig.. I don't see the point of having the two basses that sound the same, so when I got my Roadworn, I put Trubass strings on my aerodyne as recommended by the previous owner and they have warm acoustic like tone, which is completely different from the roadworn.. I feel the same with my drums and cymbals.. I have Rock/pop kit and Jungle/groovy kit
I interpret it as saying that fast, high playing and slapping is perfectly acceptable, but it must be kept under control, not be over used and should always come second to laying down the low notes.
+1 -
Agreed When you are "at work" you should be working! If I was paying someone, I would be just as angry if they were looking at pictures of kittens as I would pictures of breasts!
Just did a first gig with a new drummer who uses an electronic kit. It doesn't sound as dynamic as skins but the band sounded a whole lot better overall. In fact modify that statement about sounding dynamic, the kicks really came through and we really locked in (me bassist) when things picked up later in the set. In addition our singer just took off. With a lower on stage volume and no bleed through on the vocal mics. she could really hear her own voice and there was so much more nuance to her singing. A drummer with a volume control... bliss.
I hate electro kits unless it's for electro music.. like using a CD on record deck or using a pocket amp with a vintage bass
That's the point - it's not possible to define. The above link gives a rough approximation, hence each image is judged on it's own merits. I will try and develop some examples of what isn't allowed, the research i'm sure will be laborious and uninteresting, but that's the price I pay for being a mod .
I know it's not an easy thing for you mods.. we appreciate your work
I used an Orange stack as backline on a jazz gig last year, and couldn't get clean volume. Tried all the usual gain adjustments, but it seemed to have a low distortion threshold. Looked great though! I was using a fairly high output Alembic Epic, so I'm sure that didn't help.
Hi output on valves is never a good start.. that's why it seem those who want total clean stay on the solid state.. It still depends.. I heard an DB on an Orange Rig and it was lovely..
-
You need to try both.. if you like Orange it sounds different, but Meta might work for you.. Be warned you need to gig it really. In the shop it's never the same, unless you can bring your band in the shop ;-)
What has to be considered is that there are over 11000 members on this forum, policing them would be impossible without other users reporting them. Someone could easily have a NSFW avatar and not the first post it's on is the one that you look at with the boss nosing in. I agree that avatars should be policed, but I don't see how would be feasible either. I don't think at the moment it is a great problem, the worst i've seen is something i'd see no worse than on the front on FHM, provocative but not really in the boundaries of NSFW.
An FHM wallpaper on an office computer, would get most people in trouble at work. Policing in terms of others reporting images could work. You could ask them not to post certain images and other BCers can report them and the moderators make the call.

of if i'm honest.. the variety of basses is good.. you never know what's round the corner
