In my teens and early twenties, I joined original bands, but at the same time I realised that you can make money from being a musician, but it's much harder to make money from a an original band, so my ideas changed when I hit 20. Since then I earned money playing either drums or bass freelance or as a session musician and joined an original band. The original project I joined that were seen a hobby and the paid gigs/sessions was seen as my 'job' or work. The last band I was in, I spent a 1/2 full days a week writing was great fun and I learnt alot about writing and working with others, we actually got very close and even worked and wrote with Roland Orzabal from Tear for Fears. However, it really wasn't pulling in money, so this meant that my 'job' would have to come first. The lead singer sometimes said I wasn't 'committed' to the band as I was always gigging and it took him a long to separate the band from my gigs. However, as time past he soon realised the experience 'working' actually made me better musician and much more of a positive influence on the band. The long and short of it, is you need to think: What you want from the band? what you want to give? Once I decided this, I was happy, if the band isn't happy with you feelings on this, then you find another band. There are a lot of bands out there and 99% won't get signed however, I don't think people shouldn't give up the dream, but make sure you have an idea of your future. I don't regret any time I gave to those bands, it helped me be a better musician and most of all, I had fun, but at the same time I knew when to leave, so I wouldn't get frustrated when I knew the band weren't gonna get signed and we should just enjoy the gigs and write. On the band leader vs democracy.. It all lies on who is writing the material. If you have one person writing the songs by themselves at home then the rest of the band add bits here and there, it's quite obvious. If the band writes everything, then democracy is better, but usually a natural leader will emerge just help steer it. If the singer is writing everything and you're just turning up, he can't expect you to be there as much as him as you're really playing his songs, not the bands

I love the fender mustang, it has a great sound. I play full scale basses in general, so I only use a 3/4 for a particular sound (mustang) however, it is a bit confusing, if I don't do it often as the notes are physically in a different place to my body. But if you like the short scale, go for it..

I've done some of those Xfactor type gigs and every artist is so different.. Some want come up to the musicians, want to know about them. Say stuff like that's for playing or just wanna chat etc. Others wouldn't know if you were the drummer or the tea boy and don't care.. It's never bothered me either way. It can be fun at times. What are you recording?

I'm the first one to complain especially on here, but at the same time, I try to be the first to sort things out and to give people their dues..

Normally I just grump about the shop I think the belt idea is a great one.[/quote] I've worked in a shop and lots of people walk in and out of your shop, but you will never really know if they came in day/weeks/years before and saw at your shop or someone elses before they bought it at your shop. You just have to be nice to everyone and your reputation will make the sales, unless you're prices are dirt cheap

It's funny, although I look after my basses like a newborn. It wouldn't bother me if it had a little scratch on the back form belt buckle as the minute you take it out of the shop you've lost 30-40% of it's value now it's secondhand. I guess for 3.5k, I might think differently though

I've met martin on several occasions an he has been 1st class, fixing both my basses and never making me feel like a tool when it's comes to the ins and out of bass maintenance, of which I know very little. I always felt I could ask even silly questions about my bass, just so I had a better understanding. I just wish I was rich so I could by more gear..

I've used all of the above, it depends on your budget and now much you will use them. The custom moulds are truly king, but the shure ones, even the Shure Ec2 are great, I use it when I'm on drums or bass and love them. The key is not just the quality of the drivers but the isolation, so you can hear well what's going in your ears. I would say they are all very deliacte, which was why I stopped using the sennheiser as I don't think they are as robust, but this was 5 years ago, but I just stick to my shure's now and if a tour comes up, then I try and get the custom moulds on the tour budget. The advantage of the cheaper shure's is if you lost them or they got damaged, you wouldn't be as upset as if it was the custom moulds.

I sometimes cheaper effects can cause hiss. The ground lift would have sorted the problem if it was a buzz or hum. Unless this is the first time you have DI'd it's definately the hartke. You could try some different lead.. The short of this is if it's definatley the hartke, use a different pre Amp. Maybe you have too many pedals, as the pod should really give you pre amp part, but just needs more tweaking. I know some people who just use that.. Not my taste, but what works for you

I like the sansamp, but there are lots out there and then you can DI out of that then into your amp, if you're borrowing gear, then you can still get 'your' sound Overall getting a head is better, but the sansamp approach really makes life easy. I take my sansamp around when I can't be bothered with taking my head or I'm not sure about the gear I'm using for the gig. Also they record well

it's all relative.. Any connection (analog) between the bass and the 'speaker' or CD/Record to speaker you get a certain amount of loss.. You really should spend a reasonable amount based on the price of the amp/bass or CD/Record deck amp and speakers.. It's like buying a Jag then getting £30 tyres... but if you have a 20 year old banger then you stupid spending £100 on tyres.. or you could just OBHM cables, great value and will be great for basic to top end and will last like for bloody ages
