Depends what type of music you like..... if it's metal (or similar) then they were probably using their EMG loaded basses through some sort of Sansamp (e.g. Bass Driver) to give that high-mid 'grind' sound...
All I can really say about Ross Valory`s effects can be summed up by QUOTE One of the innovations that Valory uses (it is not known if he is the inventor) is to string a four-string bass with the bottom four strings of a 5-string set. Thus, instead of the usual E-A-D-G arrangement, his bass is strung as B-E-A-D. This adds the five string depth to the songs, while allowing the quick fingering of a four-string neck. found that on wiki, so not sure about it`s authenticity or accuracy hope that helps
He does now..... but he always used to set his bass up with standard strings/tuning.... On this track it's probably either a Peavey T-40, a Steinberger XL or more likely an Ovation Magnum he is playing.... through a Chorus pedal with plenty of mids in his EQ...

I've always thought that one of those would fit in VERY nicely in my collection too! I've been keeping my eyes open for the last couple of years but they're rare as hens teeth!

Sadly, nowhere in Denmark St. I'd recommend the Gallery in Camden & that's about it for London....

Glad to be of service..... Not sure how this band flew under the radar as I'm sure they'd be very popular with fans of everything from Steely Dan - Doobie Brothers - Kansas - Yes - Alan Parsons Project etc etc Enjoy, one and all -
Those Tech21 heads are superb.... NICE!
Been looking through again, cetera, and your black fretted 'Geddy' spec Wal is my fave. Gorgeous
Cheers mate..... it's strung with very light gauge 'Funkmaster' strings like Geddy used which is kinda interesting for me as I've always used 45-105's.... It plays beautifully & has a cracking tone! -
Wow, nice to find another Ambrosia fan here and thanks for posting these clips. I have the 'Life Beyond L.A.' album, too. Also have 'Road Island' (1982) with the excellent cover art by Ralph Steadman. I've always considered David Pack to be a hugely under-appreciated vocalist. I remember seeing something on TV years ago with him, Michael McDonald and (I think) Amy Irving working out some harmonies in the studio. Lovely stuff! Interesting to also see Joe Puerta using the X-Factor bass. You'll probably know another of my faves, Kenny Gradney/Little Feat, is big on these.
Thanks for the reply mate.... I thought I was all alone in my appreciation of this band! I really recommend you purchase their other 3 albums - Ambrosia, Somehwere I've Never Travelled & One Eighty..... classics one & all Yep, nice to hear such a great tone from his X-Factor & a simple Hartke rig... Kenny Gradney is great.... with the aforementioned Joe Puerta & Tiran Porter, Peter Cetera, Dee Murray etc he's one of my faves! -
Love the black & blue ones

Thanks chaps! I often look at my collection and I am humbled by just how many great basses I own. It hasn't been cheap/easy but I get great pleasure out of owning & playing them -
AMBROSIA I've always loved this band ever since I was introduced to their music by Tiran Porter (original bassist of 'The Doobie Brothers'). They never really made an impact over here... but they were/are stunning musicians/singers/lyricists/songwriters and for me they are right up there with Rush, Kansas etc for their 70's output. Here's some recent film of their old tunes performed exclusiverly for the Drum Channel. The bassist is one of my all time favourite players, Joe Puerta (who also plays with Bruce Horsby).... and he has a beautiful feel/touch in his playing which I would be thrilled if I ever came close to... I'm sure they're new to most of you.... but I hope you can appreciate their talent So, enjoy 'AMBROSIA'! Nice, Nice Very Nice Somewhere I've Never Travelled Time Waits For NoOne Life Beyond LA
+1 I feel pretty inadequate now too!! Gary, that is an amazing collection you have there.... I have bad gas now!!!
Thanks mate.... but don't feel inadequate!.... It's not how many basses you've got, it's what you do with them Luckily I play mine A LOT!
Surprised I didn't see an Ibanez Iceman bass in there though mate?
I know.... I love that shape... but more for guitar than bass. I find the shape a little unwieldy.... -
That black Geddy Wal is my dream bass Gary! First dibs if you ever decide to sell ???!!
Tell me about it.... I've wanted one for 10 years! You now have 2nd dibs.... as the seller wants 1st dibs to buy it BACK! As soon as I told the seller I would have it & started to sell my gear to raise the dosh he began having second thoughts. I ended up selling 2 Spectors, a Charvel, an Epi Tbird & a DeArmond Pilot in order to raise the dosh.... and he kept to his word about selling to me as I'd already made such huge gear sacrifices to get it...
In the meantime, I'm off to find OVER 2k for your Wenge Mk1
Edited that for you mate.... Not sure if I'll sell, trying not to if I can help it tbh...
