Yep, purely a backup bass to his main Spector SB1 Custom in 1977/1978. EBO pickup in the neck.....Check out Christine Sixteen on the Largo 78 show on Youtube to see it in action....

I just saw that pic too.... So it's true?! Well, Gibson must have handed over a pretty penny in royalties to persuade Gene to play that on NYE!
-
Not at all! I have the Jackson version of that exact bass. It's a tonal monster and looks cool as f**k 😎

In 1974 Gene played his Charles Lobue custom bass and then Gibson Ripper/Grabber basses (which he didn't use past 1975). When his Lobue was stolen from the back of Micki Free's car in 1976 he had Stuart Spector build him a couple of customised Spector SB1 basses and didn't actually ever play a Thunderbird at all until 1977/78 when he used it as a back up onstage. You can see it on the Largo 77 live video during 'Christine Sixteen'. It has a mirror pickguard and one of the pickups had been replaced with an EBO. Not sure that this new Gene TBird is real. I think it's someone having a little fun...;) Why would he have Gibson make a bass he doesn't like the feel of... and share the money with them.... when he can make any variation of his Punisher, Axe or a wholly new designed bass for sale and keep ALL the money? The Axe he plays/sells as part of his meet/greet package is not made in China and is actually made for him by Fernandes.

Sent a bass to Poland last week by UPS. Picked up on time and delivered on schedule. Probably just localised area conditions/sickness/xmas madness etc
-
Likely his Gibson EB bass at this point. He also had a Ricky and an early Alembic around this time and the P-Bass came a little later. He always played exactly the right thing, allowing space, grooving with the drums but still carving his own melodies. Fantastic player!

So a Rockinbetter isn't a Rickenbacker & a Rockinbetter isn't a Tokai?

I actually had a 'Ronniebarker" TRC made up for my Bass Collection Californian! Sold the bass but I still have the TRC. Will use it when/if I ever get a decent jetglo faker! -
LOVE these basses!! Wish they'd make a 4 string version though!
-
Yep, I heard about them a few months back. Interesting and fun/quirky stuff!

Yep! I was there..... along with on their last couple of headline tours.... and as far back as the mid 90's on a double headline with Foreigner at Wembley Arena. Always an amazing show - consummate singers, musicians and performers! -

The Doobie Brothers! They cover a huge breadth of musical styles with ease (from folk to blue eyed soul to heavy rock to dixieland..... and everything in between) while engaging the audience, grooving tightly together at all times AND looking like they're having a GREAT time! -
Another reason I don't/won't buy from them. Back to PR school for them....

Should be...

Upgrade to full active EMGs first. If that doesn't do the job then upgrade the pre as well to an EMG BQC preamp (which has mid control): https://www.emgpickups.com/bqcsystem.html

I'd give the 1x15 cab a miss and go for a 2x12 for the best of solid low end, with plenty of mid punch and some treble sparkle if you need it. There's a fantastic Genz Benz 2x12 in the for sale section that is probably the loudest/lightest/best value for money 2x12 out there. Add a head of your choice to that and you'll be laughing....

I've just ordered their remastered back catalogue boxset. Amazing how many fantastic songs they had that weren't hits or even released as singles. Very clever songwriting and superb musicianship from all band members! Bassist/Vocalist David Paton of course went on to be a member of Alan Parsons Project as well as appearing on Kate Bush's first couple of albums, playing with Camel & Chris De Burgh and recording/touring with Elton John in the mid 80's & Fish in the 90's. Guitarist Ian Bairnson was also a member of Alan Parsons Project, appeared on Kate Bush's first couple of albums (including THAT solo on 'Wuthering Heights') and had a busy session career with everyone from Elaine Paige to Chris De Burgh to Kenny Rogers to Bucks Fizz... Drummer Stuart Tosh played with Alan Parsons Project and then joined 10cc in 1977. Plenty of pedigree there!

A few more classic basslines added recently including some more KISS, Winger and these two melodic David Paton beauties from the early/mid 70's:
