Covers band players. Nail it or close enough?

When I've worked with tribute bands I've always learned the album versions exactly.... then listened to live versions from different eras and picked out any tasty 'live fills' the original bassist added and adapted them into the bassline.... so it becomes a 'best of'. With cover bands I've always got as close as possible but with some wiggle room. Funny thing is...... having played the tunes for months/years, when I eventually go back and listen to the original I've usually strayed miles from the original bassline over time! lol! -
Amen to that....

Me too.... at Farnham Maltings. Superb stuff :)

Just purchased a lovely Epi Vintage Pro & case from Michael. Great communication & a fantastic instrument. Deal with confidence!

Oh, how hilarious. Careful with that wit Eugene, someone might use it back at you with a band you enjoy....

I saw them in Islington Academy - special one-off club show for £40.
-
Exactly. I saw KISS for £70 at O2 Arena. Two hours of pyro, moving staging, lasers/lighting & all the inherent costs of them..... plus crew, personal/public & product liability insurances, tourbuses, lorries, logistics etc etc

I love Aja.... and all the other original Dan albums.... it's just Gaucho that leaves me cold. So sterile I feel like I've been dipped in an antibacterial bath....
-
Lol! They can keep them at that price.....

Any band you're in - covers or original - is what you make of it. I've been in many of both of the above and luckily had a decent level of success (e.g.main originals band had Euro/Jap CD release and played huge Euro festivals.... tribute band played all over Europe and Japan.... current covers band/show packs theatres), A band is only as good/rewarding as the effort you put in.... it makes no difference if it's originals or covers. It's all about doing 'what you do' WELL. Positive audience feedback, re-bookings and happy, smiling, faces at the end of the night... coupled with phrases along the lines of "you guys were fantastic"..... and hopefully a few quid in your pocket. Being anti-tribute, anti-covers or any other such nonsense just limits your playing and performing opportunities, networking angles and life /travel experiences...

Paying gigs ALWAYS take priority over any bass show....

My Youtube recommendations have led me to this groovy 70's psychedelic rock & funk instrumental album by a European band I'd never heard of before..... niiiiiice....

The fantastic and unique 'Toy Matinee' album with songs written by the late, great Kevin Gilbert (RIP) & Patrick Leonard and some of the most wonderful bass playing ever, courtesy of Guy Pratt:

Funny, I know plenty of pro players on this forum. Not that your statement has anything to do with the thread anyway... You may want to look at your communication skills (and your overuse of the 'comma')?

Ask his Mum. She paid for it..... You can ask her when she brings a cuppa in....

Love my Epi Vintage Pro.... it's not going anywhere :) -
Cheers! Just picked up a 5 space pedalboard with soft case & power supply for £35!

Close, but no cigar..... wrong band. Broken Wings was by Mr Mister - singing bassist was the fantastic Richard Page. Peter Cetera was never in Mr Mister, he was a solo artist after some 20+ years singing/playing bass in Chicago.

It's a clip from Wayne's World and Tia Carrere always reminds me of my girlfriend of the time who was half Balinese and looked VERY similar. Mmmmmm........ Marc Ferrari - Keel were part of a group of LA bands (including Black & Blue, Ratt etc) who I was into in the mid 80's. I'd recognise him anywhere. The fact that he's a prolific library music writer I know through my work at PRS.
