  1. Agree, get a great feeling/playing instrument keep it. I’d be tempted to see if the retailer would offer anything back tho, and if they did put it towards a KiOgon loom to properly sort the issue.
  2. I’m not a particular fan of them, but about 15/20 years ago the drummer of a band I was in really loved them, so got to hear By The Way a lot over that period. Quite liked it, really should get myself a copy. I’ve got BSSM & Californication, both ok but prefer By The Way.
  3. I found that using neck pickup on full and bringing in the bridge pickup to about a quarter gave me a Precisiony type tone, but focused a little lower maybe, not so many mids. I also changed the eq on my amps, being a Precision player I generally scoop mids and boost highs, with the Jazz I didn’t really need to do this.
  4. Agree, in my current band we have a song where the verses are in E and I play a bit of a walking type line but for the guitar solo I drop to a solid E so that the solo stands out more. We tried it at rehearsal last week and all agreed that it worked better, so maybe the players who seemed to be held back were, or maybe they were promoting the other strengths within the band by keeping it simple & steady.
  5. Is that because they have a bit of a "scoopy" sound to them maybe? I found them to sound pretty decent on my Precisions, and felt very comfortable to play too, only downside was they lost a lot of zing very quickly and really didn`t like the sound after that.
  6. In my classic rock band - which doesn`t gig btw, no singer - we try to play as exact to the originals as possible, and purposely pick difficult songs. The theory is we know we`re not going to gig, so we choose harder to play material in an effort to hopefully better ourselves musically. After all as much fun as it would be to belt out the easy songs after a while that would be a tad tedious, this method holds the interest, especially when with each time we go through the songs we can hear the improvement. I`ve really progressed on bass in the 2 years I`ve been with this band, I can now play stuff that 3 or 4 years ago I would have thought was way beyond me.
  7. Thanks, I`ll sort one of those as have loved the vids you`ve put up, great sounding band
  8. I`ve been on a quest to get the right preamp/DI pedal recently, and have found that I can coax very similar tones to my Ashdown from the Aguilar Tonehammer. So the Tonehammer amps might be worth a look.
  9. If wanting a Fender type instrument I`d hold out for a Mex Fender if possible. The Squiers are good, CVs & VMs especially so, but the actual Fenders are easier to do mods on such as scratchplates (for some reason Squier ones are different) and tuners. If of course you`re not the modding type then the Squiers are def worth getting.
  10. From an old dinosaur type, is it available on CD?
  11. I’ll bet that sounds great, but I wouldn’t want to move it about
  12. From a mid-scoop kinda guy, I`ve plenty of mids on my Precisions so scoop them to get out of the way of the humbucking guitars - generally choose around 400/500hz for this. But I have to make sure to not have too much going on in the lows as agree, it then just turns to mush.
  13. Yeah of course, always forget the preacher is compression, for some reason my brain automatically registers it as fuzz.
  14. With what else you`ve got there not sure if compression worth a try. Might be a bit of a strange suggestion, but what`s the one pedal you can`t do without/is integral to your sound? Maybe double up on it. I`ve seen other people adopt this approach when a pedal forms literally the backbone of their whole sound.
  15. Def got an Indie sort of vibe going on
  16. Back in 91 the band I was in did a UK tour, as a support band. First gig was in Bradford. All pile in the van which had been rented & modded for the tour, driver sets off with the band in fine mood. Pull up, driver says everyone out as he’s having trouble finding the venue, asks one of us to go into a petrol station to ask for directions. Before that happened I asked “Isn’t the gig in Bradford” to which the answer was yes. My next question, which wasn’t so well received was “ well why are we in Barnsley”. Aaaaaarrgh!
  17. Wow, great band and great they’re playing smaller venues when they can easily fill bigger ones.
  18. Having read through this I think the way the venue are behaving is potentially going to ruin the brides big day. It seems they don’t care one iota about her, the customer, who should be having the best day of her life.
  19. Henry’s currently doing XSLF, with Jim Reilly (drummer on Nobody’s Heroes album) and Avi on bass. Current SLF drummer is Steve Grantley, been with them for over 20 years now, Ian McCallum completing the line up on rhythm guitar.
  20. Yes that’s right, Ali is back in the fold now.
  21. Great looking bass Nick, & great history with it.
  22. Many years ago, in a Motley Crue originals type band our bassist got us to play his works Xmas do. Started soundcheck and this guy came running in from the other bar shouting at us to be quiet. So in accordance I quietly told him if he spoke to me like that again my guitar would meet the top of his head. So not a good start. And it continued. We were just not the right band to play to regular office types ranging from the young girls to the old guys, none of whom it seemed had ever witnessed an 80s style glam band with questionable lyrics to match. The only applause & dancing was when we did Twist & Shout. Still the bassist didn’t get fired from his job so they couldn’t have hated us that much.
  23. Stiff Little Fingers & The Professionals at The Roundhouse, March 26th, rescheduled from March 2020.
  24. My Sharona by The Knack, but check out the awesome version by Phil X & The Drills to hear how good it really is on bass & drums.
