Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2024?
Lozz196 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I’ve got the TC Polyclip tuner, I put it on the headstock with the clip at the front and the tuner bit at the back, unless I’m standing with my back to the audience they won’t see it unless really looking hard - and what audience members focus on the headstocks of basses/guitars? -
That must have been a great night Steve, 3 excellent bands

My fave bass, my 2015 US Precision cost me about £800/900ish new. I’ve just been playing it for about an hour and a half, the sheer enjoyment I get from playing this bass is unlike I’ve ever got from any other instrument. Cost doesn’t count imo once you find “your” instrument (aside from being in the position to be able to afford it of course).

Jaco only needed one… Runs for cover!

Nice one, always good to know of the range of bags that fit these.

Not seen them for a while, great band

Enjoy, great band, great bunch of guys

Yep that’s it, Kasuga! Really good guitar, I’ve had a few Gibsons and wouldn’t feel short changed by owning this one.
-
Our guitarist has just been given a Japanese Les Paul copy, bolt-on neck, name I`ve never heard of - think Kysugu? - but it`s a stunningly good guitar.

We`d heard you lot were trouble Daryl, but bringing your own blizzard, well that`s just taking it too far! 🥶 🥶 🥶

I`d actually been thinking about this earlier this year, thinking a one-off would be quite a laugh. Sadly the guy whose band it was passed of pancreatic cancer so it won`t happen - he was the singer/song-writer so no point doing it without him. So to anyone thinking about this , do it when/if you can, if it doesn`t go well then just don`t do it again.

In my last band which was very well organised the singer/guitarist used to do pretty much everything in terms of the gigs/recording sessions/online media etc. I`d look after travel stuff such as planning journey times/routes and booking transport/hotels etc, and the drummer dealt with the merch (which was considerable, think he got the short straw). I think it`s a case of finding someones skill-set then pressing go, or in some cases determining there is no skill-set amongst you for what is required - in which instance then get someone in for that/those tasks. If we had all swapped round with the singer not sorting gigs rather than the 300 plus we did whilst I was in it we`d probably have done 10 - neither myself nor the drummer being in that mould, so identify skills and encourage them.

That’s a great trio!!!

Minimum Watts required for small to medium pubs
Lozz196 replied to LuizFurness's topic in Amps and Cabs
I’ve never been fortunate enough to play through a B15, fingers crossed one day I’ll get the opportunity. -
Since using Mustang basses I`ve found that I far prefer having basses where the electrics aren`t under the pick-guard but under a separate panel, makes much more sense to me to have 3 screws and no strings to remove than 13 and all strings. I`m not that keen on any of the above but particularly dislike the Variax one.

Minimum Watts required for small to medium pubs
Lozz196 replied to LuizFurness's topic in Amps and Cabs
It’s a difficult one, for filling a pub sized venue without FOH I think the recommendations above, 500 watts into a 1x12 or 2x10 would be more than fine. I used to use a Markbass 500 watt (300 at 8ohms) watt 1x12 combo in an 8 piece band without FOH and although not gut-shuddering lows it was plenty, wasn’t pushing the amp at all. And just recalled, a while back I used my Warwick Gnome iPRO (280 watts at 4ohms/200 at 8ohms) into some form of TC Electronic 1x12 cab. Admittedly we had FOH but I had to have my onstage volume to keep up with the drummer and again I wasn`t pushing the amp at all. -
Definitely, Cliff Williams is a master at this, even his note choices, such as playing a C# when the guitars play an A on Back in Black for example, really add to the song but to the untrained ear just sounds "easy peasy". It`s only in the last few years I`ve started to learn AC/DC songs and there is much more to them than would be thought. Makes them great to play imo.

Is 8in combo really too small for decent practice
Lozz196 replied to ElPoncho's topic in Amps and Cabs
Nice one, I`ve not had the digital version but the non-digital was a nice little amp, warm, rich vintagey tones and plenty powerful enough for home. -
Where Have All The Singers Gone? Long Time Passing!
Lozz196 replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
I’m def in the backing vocals only camp. I’ve done lead vox but my voice doesn’t have enough to it for that role, whereas I can tailor my backing vox to suit most lead singers, and harmonies are something that for some reason I get quite easily. -
Not fence sitting but both. I really enjoy playing Dio-era Rainbow, Led Zep, Kansas type basslines but similarly am more than happy to groove along on AC/DC.

Ah, if smaller body then a Yamaha CPX as @pineweasel recommends would be good.

Epiphone EJ200CE is worth a look, has a really nice sound
-
Worth looking at an Ashdown RM500, you can pick them up used for around £300 and they`ll def do what you`re after. Same with Markbass, I`ve found that their amps pair very nicely with Barefaced cabs.

Was there ever a more pointless job than that of the man who is employed to fit the indicators on a BMW?

Me too. To my shame will be my first time seeing Maiden.
